Last Night
Cleveland Browns 24, Cincinnati Bengals 3

Browns 24, Bengals 3 – Browns whip Bengals
The Cleveland Browns own a piece of the AFC North lead following a 24-3 stifling of the Bengals in Cincinnati. Ben Tate, Isiah Crowell and Terrance West had short touchdown runs as the Browns improved to 6-3 and ended a 17-game losing streak in division road games. Cleveland hounded Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton, who was just 10 of 33 for 86 yards and three interceptions.

NFL – Lions heading back to London in 2015
The NFL will stage three more regular-season games at Wembley Stadium in London again next season, including the first-ever division game in England. The Miami Dolphins will return to London for a third time to face the New York Jets on Oct. 4 in an AFC East matchup.  The Jacksonville Jaguars will play the Buffalo Bills on Oct. 25. And, the following week, the Detroit Lions will be back for the second year in a row to face the Kansas City Chiefs on Nov. 1.

NFL – Bears’ Allen says issues are not physical
Jared Allen wanted to make one thing clear. He’s not ready for a rocking chair.  The Chicago Bears defensive end insisted this week he is as lively as ever and concerns about a decline are misguided.  The five-time Pro Bowl defensive end turned some heads recently when he said after a lopsided loss at New England two weeks ago he needed “to try and find a half-step.” Even though he did not say he lost half a step, his comment simply added to the angst around Chicago as the Bears (3-5) try to get a grip on a season that’s slipping away.  They dropped four of five before their bye, with ugly losses to Miami at home and against the Patriots on the road. Now, after a week off, they get Aaron
Rodgers and the Packers in Green Bay on Sunday night.

NFL – NFL reviewing Peterson case
The NFL is formally reviewing Adrian Peterson’s case, for potential punishment under the league’s personal conduct policy. Spokesman Brian McCarthy says Peterson has been told by the NFL that his status on paid leave from the Vikings will not change until completion of the process. The Vikings running back pleaded no contest in Texas on Tuesday to misdemeanor reckless assault, down from a felony charge of child abuse for disciplining his 4-year-old son with a wooden switch. The league says it requested that Peterson submit relevant information from his case and meet with designated experts who will make recommendations for Commissioner Roger Goodell’s consideration.  Peterson will have the opportunity for a hearing before any punishment is levied.

NFL – Rice hearing concludes
A hearing for Ray Rice appealing his NFL suspension concluded Thursday after two days and testimony from the former running back and the head of the league. Rice and his wife Janay Rice left the hearing separately after each testified at the New York office of a neutral arbiter. The arbitration hearing will determine whether the NFL overstepped its authority in modifying a two-game suspension of Rice, making it indefinite after video of the running back hitting his wife was released by TMZ. Two people familiar with the case said Thursday there’s no timetable for the former federal judge presiding over the case to make her decision. Rice’s attorney said: “I can trust it’s a fair process.”

He said he used another athlete’s inhaler twice and “incorrectly assumed that there were no problems” with the device.

NCAA Football – Ex-Irish Petitgout out on bail in sex assault case
A former Notre Dame player facing a sex assault charge has been released on bail. Luke Petitgout’s attorney says the former offensive lineman was released from the Bergen County Jail on Thursday.  Petitgout was charged Tuesday with assault and sexual assault after an alleged incident early that morning at his home in Woodcliff Lake.  Local police said the alleged assault was committed on a person Petitgout knows, but they didn’t provide any additional details. Petitgout’s attorney said Thursday his client denies the charges and that he was anxious to see his daughters.  Petitgout played college football at Notre Dame and spent eight seasons with the New York Giants and one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

NCAA Football – Tigers extend win streak
The only top-25 football team in action on Thursday was No. 19 Clemson, and the Tigers improved to 7-2 with a 34-20 win at Wake Forest.  Artavis Scott took a touch pass from Cole Stoudt 68 yards for the go-ahead touchdown with 10:53 left. Stoudt finished 27 of 42 for 282 yards with three touchdowns in Clemson’s sixth consecutive win.

Detroit Tigers DH Victor Martinez is a winner of the Silver Slugger award.  Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout, Pittsburgh outfielder Andrew McCutchen and Washington shortstop Ian Desmond have won their third straight Silver Slugger Awards. Chicago White Sox rookie first baseman Jose Abreu and Houston second baseman Jose Altuve were among eight first-time winners announced today by Louisville Slugger. Texas third baseman Adrian Beltre won for the fourth time.

Golf – McDowell starts fast
Graeme McDowell opened with seven birdies in 12 holes and finished with a 5-under 67 for a two-shot lead in the HSBC Champions in Shanghai.  That’s good for a two-shot lead over a group of players that include Rickie Fowler, Martin Kaymer and Brandt Snedeker. Adam Scott and Henrik Stenson were among those another shot behind. McDowell is the only player to have finished in the top 10 in the previous three WGCs this year.
