MLB – Tigers hire Rich Dubee as new pitching coach
The Detroit Tigers have hired Rich Dubee to be the team’s new pitching coach. Dubee takes over after Jeff Jones’ retirement. Dubee was the minor league pitching coordinator for the Atlanta Braves for the past two seasons. Before that, he was the pitching coach for the Philadelphia Phillies for nine seasons. He was with the Phillies when they won the World Series in 2008, and when their rotation included aces Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee. The Tigers are trying to bounce back from a last-place finish this year, when their once-vaunted starting rotation slipped significantly.

MLB – Detroit’s Norris says surgery successful on cancerous growth
Tigers left-hander Daniel Norris says he’s had successful surgery on the cancerous growth on his thyroid. Norris said on Twitter and Instagram on Thursday that he is “Cancer Free” _ he had announced last week that he was having the malignant growth removed. Norris went 3-2 with a 3.75 ERA this year in 13 starts for Toronto and Detroit. He was traded to the Tigers in late July as the most highly regarded prospect in the deal that sent David Price to the Blue Jays. The Tigers said they knew about his condition when they acquired him. Norris said he was told by a doctor he could wait until the end of the season to have the growth removed, so he kept playing.

NCAA Football – Temple time: No. 21 Owls take big stage against  No. 8 Irish
Rarely in college football can it be said with a high degree of certainty that a school is playing the biggest football game in program history.  This is one of those times. No. 21 Temple hosts No. 8 Notre Dame on Saturday night in the first game the Owls have ever played featuring two ranked teams. Temple is also 7-0 for the first time in school history. And the ultimate stamp of authenticity: ESPN’s “College GameDay” is setting up shop in Philadelphia this weekend for Temple.  Temple! A program that was an FBS outpost for decades. Temple football was so bad at one point it was essentially kicked out of the Big East. Now, Temple is playing the game of the week on Halloween Night at a sold-out Lincoln Financial Field, the home of the Eagles. Notre Dame (6-1) is right at home on the big stage.

Silverdome – Pontiac Silverdome will come down in 2016
The Pontiac Silverdome is coming down next year. Owners of the former home of the NFL’s Detroit Lions and the site of the 1982 Super Bowl believe that will make the 127-acre site in suburban Detroit more attractive to developers. Kristie King of real estate firm CBRE tells the Detroit Free Press that the wrecking ball will swing in 2016. The Silverdome’s roof is gone. Robert Mihelich, a vice president at CBRE, says the stadium has deteriorated due to weather. It’s owned by Triple Investment Group of Toronto. The Silverdome opened in 1975, north of Detroit. The Lions played there until 2002. The Detroit Pistons spent a decade in the stadium. Other events included rock concerts, World Cup S  occer and a Mass in 1987 by Pope John Paul II.
