Tigers 11, White Sox 8 – Tigers hold onto big lead this time, top White Sox 11-8
Justin Upton doubled, tripled and drove in four runs; J.D. Martinez had three of Detroit’s season-high seven doubles and the Tigers this time held on to a big lead, beating the skidding Chicago White Sox 11-8 on Tuesday night. After blowing a 7-0 lead in a 12-inning loss a night earlier, the Tigers raced to a 10-2 edge in the fourth and overcame a second straight subpar start by Jordan Zimmermann (9-3) for their eighth win in 10 games.  Zimmermann allowed six runs _ four earned _ and eight hits in seven innings, but got plenty of help. Miguel Cabrera went 4 for 5 with two doubles for the Tigers, who had 16 hits and a baserunner in every inning. Miguel Gonzalez (1-2) needed 91 pitches to get 10 outs, allowing seven runs and eight hits in Chicago’s 23rd loss in 32 games.

Cubs 4, Nationals 3 – Almora’s double in 9th lifts Cubs over Nationals 4-3
Albert Almora Jr. drove in the go-ahead run with a ninth-inning double, Dexter Fowler had two hits and the Chicago Cubs defeated the Washington Nationals 4-3 on Tuesday night. Addison Russell led off the ninth with a walk from Sammy Solis (1-2) and was sacrificed to second before Almora, who entered the game in the eighth inning, lined a shot to left center. Jason Heyward provided a two-run single for Chicago, which evened the three-game series between division leaders. Washington, which had won four straight, tied it in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Anthony Rendon off closer Hector Rondon. Rondon (1-1) pitched the final 1 2/3 innings for the win. Washington was without closer Jonathan Papelbon, who was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right intercostal strain.

NHL – AP source: NHL settles on Las Vegas for expansion
A person with direct knowledge of the NHL’s decision says the league has settled on Las Vegas as its choice for expansion. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because details have not been released by the league ahead of its Board of Governors meeting on June 22 in Las Vegas. Quebec City was also considered for expansion. A second person who had been briefed on the decision said Las Vegas was a “done deal” following the recommendation of the NHL’s executive committee.  The franchise would be the NHL’s 31st team and the first major professional sports franchise in Las Vegas. The league isn’t expected to expand until the 2017-18 season and organizers will have to pay an expected expansion fee of $500 million.

NBA – Series moves back East
There will be a Game 6 in the NBA Finals. Cleveland forced the issue with a 112-97 win over the Warriors in Oakland Monday night. The Warriors didn’t have the suspended Draymond Green to help out on defense and it showed, as LeBron James and Kyrie Irving each had 41 points for the Cavaliers. But Green will be back in the lineup in Thursday’s Game 6. The Cleveland defense had a lot to say about the outcome of the game, holding Golden State to just 12 points in the final quarter.  If the Cavs win Thursday night at home, Game 7 will be Sunday back in Oakland.

NFL – Lions president says cheerleaders add to game environment
Detroit Lions President Rod Wood cites fan feedback as a driving force behind the team’s decision to add cheerleaders this season. Wood says owner Martha Ford was involved in the decision, which the Lions announced Monday. Although most NFL franchises have cheerleaders, the Lions have gone without them for much of their history. Wood said Tuesday that Ford and her children were involved in the decision, and it was something he approached them about after feedback from fans and surveys and focus groups. Wood says Detroit’s cheerleaders will be part-time employees, and they’ll be employed by a separate organization _ not directly through the team.

NFL – Alshon Jeffery’s return a start for developing Bears offense
Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler had his primary target back for the start of minicamp when Alshon Jeffery practiced with the team for the first time since last season.  The two have a lot of catching up to do in the Bears’ offense under new coordinator Dowell Loggains after Jeffery followed up an injury-filled season by staying away from the team’s voluntary organized team activity work at Halas Hall.  Cutler says he’s not worried and he expects Jeffery will be ready for the season. Cutler spent much of last season missing his top four receivers because of injuries, including rookie draft pick Kevin White for the entire season. Jeffery, designated a franchise player during free agency, has been working out on his own. He’s due $14.6 million this year, but wants Bears GM Ryan Pace to negotiate a long-term deal.

NCAA Basketball – Men’s – Brey hires former Notre Dame guard Ayers as an assistant
Notre Dame basketball coach Mike Brey has hired former Fighting Irish guard Ryan Ayers as an assistant coach. Ayers is the second former Irish player joining Brey’s staff in a week, joining Ryan Humphrey, who was named an assistant last week. They replace Martin Ingelsby, who left to become Delaware’s head coach, and Anthony Solomon, who left for an assistant’s job at Georgetown. Ayers was a captain on the 2008-09 team that finished 21-15 and ranks fourth on the school’s all-time list for career 3-point shooting percentage (.424) and 11th in 3-point field goals made (170). Ayers was an assistant coach at Bucknell the past two seasons as the Bison earned trips to the National Invitational Tournament. His father, Randy Ayers, is an assistant coach for the New Orleans Pelicans.
