Royals 8, Tigers 6 – Perez homers, drives in career-best 5, Royals top Tigers 8-6
Salvador Perez hit a three-run homer and had a career-high five RBIs, Yordano Ventura twice escaped bases-loaded jams and the Kansas City Royals held on to beat the Detroit Tigers 8-6 on Tuesday night. The Tigers cut a six-run deficit in half when Jarrod Saltalamacchia homered for the third straight game in the seventh inning. Then they loaded the bases with one out against Joakim Soria in the eighth, but Kelvin Herrera retired Miguel Cabrera and J.D. Martinez around a hit batter to limit the damage. Wade Davis breezed through the ninth inning for his sixth save.  Perez hit a two-out, two-run double in the third before his two-out shot in the fifth gave Kansas City an 8-2 lead. Ventura (1-0) allowed two runs on six hits in five innings. Cabrera had a pair of RBIs for Detroit, but he also struck out in his other four at-bats. Shane Greene (1-1) was tagged for seven runs in 4 1/3 innings.

White Sox 5, Angels 0 – Latos lowers ERA to 0.49; White Sox beat Angels 5-0
Mat Latos didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning, Todd Frazier and Jose Abreu hit solo home runs and the Chicago White Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-0 on Tuesday night to snap a three-game losing streak. Latos (3-0) allowed two hits over 6 1/3 innings and lowered his ERA to 0.49 through three starts.   Frazier went deep to left in the second and Abreu homered to center in the fifth off fastballs by Matt Shoemaker (1-2) in the Angels’ fourth loss in five games. Andrelton Simmons doubled to extend his hitting streak to a career-high 12 games and end Latos’ night after 101 pitches. Adam Eaton then threw out Simmons at the plate when he tried to score off C.J. Cron’s one-out single to right.

Cubs 2, Cardinals 1 – Hammel leads Cubs past Cardinals with arm, bat
Jason Hammel worked six sharp innings and had both RBIs for the Chicago Cubs in a 2-1 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night. The Cardinals stranded two runners against the Cubs bullpen in the seventh and eighth. Yadier Molina was at second base when Hector Rondon struck out pinch hitter Jedd Gyorko to earn his third save in three chances. Chicago leads the majors at 11-3 and goes for a three-game sweep Wednesday over the defending NL Central champions. They last swept St. Louis in three games on the road Sept. 13-15, 2010.

MLB – Kyle Schwarber undergoes reconstructive knee surgery
Chicago Cubs young slugger Kyle Schwarber, out for the season with a left knee injury, has undergone reconstructive surgery to repair torn ligaments. The 23-year-old Schwarber was hurt in an outfield collision with center fielder Dexter Fowler on April 7. The surgery was done in Dallas by Cowboys orthopedic surgeon Dr. Daniel Cooper, an expert in multiple ligament repair.  General manager Jed Hoyer anticipates Schwarber will join the team later this week while rehabbing. Schwarber had 16 homers and 43 RBIs in 69 games for the Cubs last year, and five more in the postseason.

MLB – Tigers activate left-hander Hardy from disabled list
The Detroit Tigers activated left-hander Blaine Hardy from the disabled list and designated right-hander Logan Kensing for assignment before Tuesday’s game against the Kansas City Royals. Hardy gives the Tigers three left-handed relievers against the lefty-heavy Royals lineup. He had been out since late in the spring with a shoulder impingement and posted a 3.86 ERA in four rehab outings. Hardy was among the Tigers’ best relievers last season, with a 3.08 ERA in 70 appearances.

Game 5 is Thursday night at Tampa Bay. Ben Bishop stopped 26 shots for the Lightning and Petr Mrazek made 30 saves for the Red Wings. Palat was in a perfect position right in front of the net to make the most of Jonathan Drouin’s pass on the game-winning goal. Drouin had three assists. NHL – Blackhawks F Shaw appears to use gay slur in loss to Blues
A prominent gay rights group affiliated with the NHL says it plans to reach out to the league after Chicago Blackhawks forward Andrew Shaw appeared to use a gay slur during a 4-3 playoff loss to the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday night. Shaw was sent off for interference at 17:56 of the third period. While sitting in the penalty box, it looked as if Shaw directed a gay slur toward someone on the ice, and the You Can Play Project said it planned to reach out to the NHL “to assist in an appropriate response.” Shaw says he doesn’t remember what he said.

NFL – More issues for Manziel
A grand jury in Dallas is scheduled to consider this week whether to charge former NFL quarterback and Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel with attacking his ex-girlfriend in a January incident. Prosecutors will present the Manziel case to a grand jury Thursday, according to a spokeswoman for the Dallas County district attorney. Manziel is accused of hitting his ex-girlfriend, Colleen Crowley, so hard that she temporarily lost hearing in one ear. Agent Drew Rosenhaus has dropped Manziel as a client, one week after telling the troubled quarterback to seek help or he would no longer represent him. This is the first time in Rosenhaus’ 27 years of representing players that he has terminated a contract with a player.

NCAA – Attorney: NCAA also deserves blame in UNC fraud scandal
An attorney representing two ex-North Carolina athletes says the school and NCAA are both responsible for UNC’s long-running academic fraud scandal that he says denied athletes a quality education. Michael Hausfeld said Tuesday in a hearing in federal court that athletes who took even one of the irregular courses had been defrauded. Hausfeld is one of the attorneys representing ex-women’s basketball player Rashanda McCants and ex-football player Devon Ramsay, who filed a lawsuit alleging neither defendant did enough to ensure athletes received a quality education. The school and NCAA are seeking to have the case dismissed, while UNC is also seeking the dismissal of a related lawsuit filed by two other ex-athletes. District Court Judge Loretta C. Biggs heard arguments in both cases Tuesday but didn’t issue a ruling.

NCAA Women’s Basketball – UConn coach released from hospital
University of Connecticut women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma has been released from the hospital. He had been admitted on Saturday with an undisclosed ailment. The school says the 62-year-old had boarded a plane Saturday morning, but decided to deplane because he was not feeling well. The Hall of Fame coach guided the Huskies to an unprecedented 11th national title earlier this month.

Huge Indy 500 graphic going up on Indianapolis hotel
A multi-story graphic depicting an Indy car and the Indianapolis 500’s Borg-Warner Trophy will greet visitors to downtown Indianapolis during the month of May. The nearly 75,000-square-foot graphic celebrating the 100th running of the Indy 500 next month will adorn the exterior of the JW Marriott Indianapolis hotel.  The race host committee announced Monday the graphic will measure 246 feet wide by more than 300 feet tall. Installation of its 501 panels began Monday. The committee says full installation should be complete for most of the month of May. The graphic is being installed by Indiana company Sport Graphics, which also created graphics hung from the same hotel for the 2012 Super Bowl and the 2015 Men’s Final Four.
