White Sox 8, Indians 5 – Rodón beats Indians after no-no, Abreu hits 2 homers for Sox
Carlos Rodón followed up his no-hitter by hanging around for five shaky innings to beat Cleveland for the second time in a week and José Abreu homered twice, leading the Chicago White Sox past the Indians. Rodón pitched in short sleeves despite temperatures dropping into the 30s and snow on the way. He worked around five walks, giving up a homer and throwing 110 pitches — four fewer than in his April 14 gem. Jordan Luplow’s leadoff homer in the third ended Rodón’s streak of no-hit innings against the Indians at 11. Tim Anderson and Yasmani Grandal hit two-run homers for Chicago.

Cubs 3, Mets 1 – Arrieta pitches Cubs to 3-1 win over Mets on cool night
Jake Arrieta pitched five effective innings, Craig Kimbrel escaped a jam in the ninth and the Chicago Cubs used some aggressive baserunning to beat the New York Mets 3-1. Arrieta allowed one run and three hits, struck out four and walked three. Wearing short sleeves on a cool, clear night — the game-time temperature was 36 degrees — Arrieta also contributed to two runs at the plate. J.D. Davis homered for New York, but also committed two throwing errors at third base — including one that brought home Chicago’s first run. The Mets had won five of six.

Pirates at Tigers, PPD – Tigers-Pirates game postponed on snowy day in Detroit area
Tuesday night’s game between the Detroit Tigers and Pittsburgh Pirates has been postponed because of inclement weather. The game was called about two hours before the scheduled first pitch on a snowy day in the Detroit area. The teams will try to play a doubleheader Wednesday, with the first seven-inning game starting at 2:10 p.m. Eastern and the second scheduled for 6:40 p.m. Michael Fulmer is set to pitch the opener for Detroit, with Spencer Turnbull making his season debut in the second game. NFL – Bears re-sign safety Tashaun Gipson to 1-year contract
The Chicago Bears have re-signed veteran safety Tashaun Gipson to a one-year contract. Gipson signed with the Bears last year after being released by Houston and started all 16 games, making 64 tackles and two interceptions. He has 25 interceptions over nine seasons with Cleveland (2012-15), Jacksonville (2016-18), Houston (2019) and Chicago. The Bears made the playoffs for the second time in three years despite going 8-8 in the regular season for the second year in a row. They got knocked out in a lopsided wild-card loss at New Orleans.

NFL – Steelers sign coach Mike Tomlin to 3-year contract extension
Mike Tomlin is sticking with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The club announced its longtime coach has signed a contract extension that runs through the 2024 season. Tomlin is 145-78-1 in 14 years with the Steelers with one Super Bowl victory. The deal means Tomlin will likely be part of the process whenever quarterback Ben Roethlisberger opts to retire. The 39-year-old Roethlisberger is returning for the 2021 season but the team has no heir apparent in place.

Golf – PGA – PGA Tour offering $40 million in bonus money to top stars
The PGA Tour is awarding a $40 million bonus pool to the top 10 players who move the needle in golf, regardless of how they perform inside the ropes. Some of the top players and managers have loosely hinted at the Player Impact Program since the start of 2020. That was about the time the proposed Premier Golf League funded in part by Saudi money was trying to lure the top players to join an international tour. Golfweek was the first to report the Players Impact Program started in January. The top 10 are determined by an “impact score” derived using various brand-related metrics to measure popularity.

Olympics – Activists call for IOC to sanction Iran Olympic program
A group of athletes and human rights activists is calling on the IOC to sanction Iran’s Olympic program for what it says is the country’s long-running pattern of ordering athletes to avoid competing against Israelis in international events. The head of the United for Navid campaign, formed to protest the execution of Iranian wrestler Navid Afkari, sent a letter to IOC president Thomas Bach this week. It highlights more than a half-dozen examples over the past 16 years of Iranian athletes intentionally losing matches that would set up meetings against Israelis, or withdrawing from competitions against athletes from that country.

UEFA – Super League collapses after the 6 English clubs withdraw
All six English clubs have dramatically abandoned plans to join a breakaway Super League, threatening to implode the project by a group of elite English, Spanish and Italian clubs less than two days after it was announced. Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham have deserted the project. The remaining fledgling Super League organization was defiant, blaming “pressure” being applied for forcing out the English clubs and insisting the proposal complied with the law and yet be revived in some form.
