Michigan State 81, (5) Illinois 72 – Michigan St tops No. 5 Illinois 81-72, bolsters NCAA chances
Aaron Henry scored 20 points and Joshua Langford had 15 points and a career-high 16 rebounds to lead Michigan State to an 81-72 win over No. 5 Illinois. The Spartans earned a desperately needed quality win to bolster their chances of playing in 23 straight NCAA Tournaments. The Fighting Illini had won a Big Ten-best seven straight games, putting them in contention for a No. 1 seed in college basketball’s showcase that starts next month. Trent Frazier scored 22 points for Illinois, whose star players weren’t as productive as usual against a suddenly stingy defense.

Louisville 69, Notre Dame 57 – Jones, Withers lead Louisville past Notre Dame 69-57
Carlik Jones scored 18 points, Jae’Lyn Withers had 12 points and 13 rebounds and Louisville beat Notre Dame 69-57. Louisville was playing at home for the first time since Feb. 1, and did so without second-leading scorer David Johnson, averaging 12.7 points, 5.9 rebounds and 3.7 assists, due to an unspecified illness. Juwan Durham led Notre Dame with 18 points.

Golf – Woods suffers leg injuries in crash
Authorities say there’s no immediate evidence that Tiger Woods was impaired in a car crash that left him with multiple fractures in his right leg.  HIs surgeon said the 15-time Grand Slam champion had multiple “open fractures” to his lower right leg. The surgeon said a rod was placed in the tibia, while screws and pins were inserted in the ankle.  At a news conference, the police chief and fire chief of Los Angeles County didn’t answer follow-up questions on how they know he wasn’t impaired or how fast he was driving. Weather was not a factor in the crash. Sheriff Alex Villanueva and Fire Chief Daryl Osby (OHZ’-bee) say Woods was conscious and able to communicate when authorities arrived to pry him from an SUV after a rollover crash Tuesday. He was taken to a hospital in serious condition. His agent said he underwent leg surgery.  The deputy who first responded said Woods was alert and able to respond. He also said the location was prone to accidents.

Golf – Woods faces hard recovery from serious injuries in car crash
Authorities say golf star Tiger Woods was seriously injured when his SUV crashed into a median and rolled over several times on a steep road in suburban Los Angeles. Harbor-UCLA Medical Center’s chief medical offer says Woods shattered tibia and fibula bones on his right leg in multiple locations, with additional injuries in the ankle and foot. A statement on his Twitter account says he was awake, responsive and recovering. Authorities had to extricate Woods through the front windshield. They say he’s fortunate to be alive. Authorities say there wasn’t evidence Woods was impaired. The crash happened on a sweeping, downhill stretch of road.

Pistons 105, Magic 93 – Pistons snap 3-game losing streak with 105-93 win over Magic
Rookie guard Saben Lee scored a career-best 21 points, Josh Jackson added 18 points and the Detroit Pistons snapped a three-game losing streak with a 105-93 win over the Orlando Magic. Detroit, which has an NBA-worst road record of 3-14, won for the first time since Feb. 14. Detroit’s ninth victory of the season ended Orlando’s three-game winning streak and put a damper on Magic center Nikola Vucevic’s selection as a reserve for the NBA All-Star Game. Just two nights after battering the undersized Pistons for 37 points and 13 rebounds, Vucevic finished with 20 points and nine rebounds.

MLB – Tigers announce minor league deal with Julio Teheran
Detroit Tigers have announced their minor league deal with right-hander Julio Teheran, which includes an invitation to major league spring training. The 30-year-old Teheran is coming off a tough season in which he went 0-4 with a 10.05 ERA with the Los Angeles Angels, but he was an All-Star in 2014 and 2016 for the Atlanta Braves. His ERA was under 4.00 in both 2018 and 2019 with the Braves. He made at least 30 starts for seven straight years before last season was shortened by the coronavirus pandemic.

MLB – Seattle doing damage control with players after exec’s video
Seattle Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto and manager Scott Servais are doing damage control with players who were directly mentioned or referenced by former team CEO Kevin Mather in an online video that led to his resignation. They’re giving players the message that they have every right to be upset. The video posted showed Mather expressing his views of the club’s organizational strategy and making controversial remarks about players during a recent online event. He took insensitive shots at a former All-Star from Japan and a top prospect from the Dominican Republic for their English skills. He also admitted the team may be manipulating service time for some of its young players. Mather has since resigned.

Biden administration withdraws from transgender athlete case
The Biden administration has withdrawn government support for a federal lawsuit in Connecticut that seeks to ban transgender athletes from participating in girls’ high school sports. Connecticut allows high school athletes to compete in sports according to their gender identity. The lawsuit was filed a year ago by several cisgender runners who argue they have been deprived of wins, state titles and athletic opportunities by being forced to compete against two transgender sprinters. The Justice Department and the Education Department’s Office for Civil Rights withdrew their support for the case ahead of a hearing scheduled for Friday on a motion to dismiss the lawsuit.
