Michigan 83, Maryland 64 – Michigan gets first win in a month, slams Maryland 83-64
Hunter Dickinson scored 21 points, grabbed six rebounds and distributed six assists and Michigan beat Maryland 83-64 for their first win in a month. Michigan never trailed. The Wolverines used a 9-0 run to extend their lead to 20-9 with Caleb Houstan scoring a layup and a three-point play to ignite the 81-second outburst. Michigan finished the half up 39-19 before The Terrapins established some momentum and closed to 57-44 with an 11-6 run with 11:12 remaining. But Fatts Russell missed a contested layup and Frankie Collins laid in an acrobatic lob off a pass from Eli Brooks and Michigan was never threatened again.

Akron 74, WMU 73 – Ali sinks game winner sending Akron over W. Michigan 74-73
Ali Ali scored 18 points and his basket with 5.4-seconds left capped an 11-0 Akron run and the Zips beat Western Michigan 74-73 on Tuesday night. Enrique Freeman had 15 points and eight rebounds and Xavier Castaneda scored 14 points and distributed six assists for Akron. B. Artis White scored a career-high 23 points for the Broncos.

Warriors 102, Pistons 86 – Splash Brothers Curry, Thompson lead Warriors past Pistons
Klay Thompson scored 21 points, Stephen Curry had 18, and the Golden State Warriors returned from a tough trip to beat the Detroit Pistons 102-86. Curry was back after a one-game absence. He shot 6 for 11 with four 3-pointers and added eight assists. He fell on his right hand during a win at Chicago on Friday, then missed Sunday’s 119-99 loss at Minnesota. Andrew Wiggins scored 19 points for the Warriors, who were coming off a 1-3 road stretch. Thompson found a groove in his second home game since returning from two devastating injuries and surgeries that cost him more than 2 1/2 years.

NHL – NHL to stop testing asymptomatic players post-All-Star break
The NHL will stop testing asymptomatic players, coaches and staff who are fully vaccinated following the All-Star break. The only exception is when the tests are needed for crossing the U.S.-Canada border. The league and Players’ Association agreed to keep the five-day isolation period that went into place in late December. The league says positive COVID-19 test results are declining. The NHL and NHLPA will review protocols again Jan. 31. So far this season, 104 games have been postponed. Several of those were prompted by attendance restrictions in Canada.

PHF – Women’s hockey league to increase salary cap, add 2 teams
The Premier Hockey Federation is more than doubling each of its six teams’ salary caps to $750,000 and adding two expansion franchises next season in a bid to capitalize on the wave of attention women’s hockey traditionally enjoys following the Winter Olympics. The increased payroll and number of teams comes as a result of the league’s board of governors’ commitment to invest more than $25 million over the next three years. The decision is also considered a major step in the PHF’s attempt to thaw its relationship with United States and Canadian national team players. They have balked at joining North America’s lone professional women’s hockey league.

NFL – Former Bears star Hampton faces probation for drunk driving
Pro Football Hall of Famer Dan Hampton has been sentenced to one year of probation after pleading guilty to a drunken-driving charge in Indiana. The 64-year-old was stopped by Winfield police in November and had an open jug of wine in his truck and a blood alcohol level twice the legal limit. He pleaded guilty last month. His attorney tells the Post-Tribune that he’s accepted responsibility for his actions. Hampton was a defensive lineman who played for the Chicago Bears from 1979 to 1990 and was a member of the Bears’ Super Bowl-winning team in 1985. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2002.

NFL – Cowboys QB apologizes for condoning fans throwing at refs
Dak Prescott is apologizing for his comments that condoned Dallas Cowboys fans throwing objects at NFL officials after the team’s playoff loss. The quarterback said in a series of tweets Tuesday night that he deeply regrets what he said when caught up in the emotions of a disappointing loss. When initially asked about objects such as water bottles being thrown at Dallas players as they left the field Sunday after their loss, Prescott said it was “sad” fans would do that. After another reporter said it appeared that officials were the targets, the quarterback responded, “Credit to them then.”

WNBA – Fever cut 4th overall pick Gondrezick
Tuesday the WNBA’s Indiana Fever have waived last years 4th overall pick Kysre Gondrezick.   The former Benton Harbor star averaged only 1.9 points per game, playing in only 19 games with the Fever last year.   All 19 games were before the Olympic break, she did not return to the team after the break citing personal reasons.  She had her high school jersey retired by Benton Harbor last month.

Olympics – Olympic athletes urged by activists not to criticize China
Athletes at the Beijing Olympics have been urged by human rights activists to avoid criticizing China because they could be prosecuted. The International Olympic Committee has said athletes will have freedom of speech at next month’s Winter Games but the Olympic Charter rule that prohibits political protests at medal ceremonies also requires “applicable public law” to be followed. The IOC has not publicly detailed how athletes who speak out would be protected. Rob Koehler of the Global Athlete group says “silence is complicity and that’s why we have concerns.” The Winter Games open on Feb. 4.

Olympics – Report: Chinese Olympic app has serious security flaws
A new report shows that an app that’s expected to be widely used by athletes and others attending next month’s Winter Games in Beijing has glaring security problems that could expose sensitive data to interception. Citizen Lab, an internet watchdog group, said in a report published Tuesday the MY2022 app has seriously flawed encryption that would make users’ sensitive data – and any other data communicated through it – vulnerable to being hacked. The app allows users to submit required health information on a daily basis and is part of China’s aggressive effort to manage the coronavirus pandemic while hosting the games.
