NBA
Detroit 115, Cleveland 113
Derrick Rose hit a 15-footer with :27 left and the Pistons rallied for a 115-113 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. Detroit outscored the Cavaliers 31-18 in the fourth quarter to pull it out. Rose, who scored 24 points, hit a runner in the lane to give Detroit a 114-113 lead and cap a comeback that began with the Pistons trailing 110-91 early in the quarter. Collin Sexton’s late shot didn’t hit the rim and Cleveland was called for a shot clock violation. The Cavaliers have lost five straight.

Off the court…
Pistons forward Blake Griffin is out indefinitely after having surgery on his left knee. The team says Griffin will have an extended rehabilitation period with no timetable for his return. The 30-year-old Griffin was an All-Star last season for the sixth time. He has played in just 18 games this season and is averaging a career-low 15.5 points and a career-low 4.7 rebounds per game. The Pistons probably won’t want to rush Griffin back in part because they are mired in another rebuilding season. Making the playoffs seems unlikely.

NHL
Detroit 4, Montreal 3
Filip Zadina scored the tiebreaking goal with 3:52 left in the third period, sending the Red Wings to a 4-3 win over the Montreal Canadiens. Detroit had lost two in a row and 20 of their last 23, giving them the NHL’s worst record by a wide margin. Montreal has dropped seven straight games. Frans Nielsen got his second goal of the game with 8:41 remaining to pull Detroit into a 3-all tie. Artturi Lehkonen had a short-handed goal and Nick Suzuki scored to give the Canadiens a two-goal lead they couldn’t hold.

Calgary 2, Chicago 1
Elias Lindholm scored twice to reach 300 points in his 500th NHL game, and the Calgary Flames beat the Blackhawks 2-1 for their third straight win. Matthew Tkachuk had two assists for Calgary, which lost 5-3 to Chicago in their first meeting of the season on New Year’s Eve. Cam Talbot made 31 saves. The Blackhawks lost key forward Dylan Strome to a right ankle injury early in the second period. They had won four of five during one of their best stretches of the season. Dominik Kubalik scored his 15th goal of the season in the first period for Chicago’s only score.

NFL
The Lions have promoted assistant coaches Hank Fraley and Billy Yates to lead their offensive line. Fraley had been Detroit’s assistant offensive line coach the previous two seasons. Yates was on Matt Patricia’s coaching staff the last two years. Patricia fired six members of his staff shortly after he finished his second season with three wins. He announced defensive coordinator Paul Pasqualoni was leaving the team to be closer to his family, and offensive line coach Jeff Davidson has taking an indefinite leave.

BASEBALL
The White Sox have agreed to a $6 million, one-year contract with free-agent reliever Steve Cishek. A person with direct knowledge of the deal says it’s pending a physical. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the move had not been finalized. The 33-year-old Cishek is moving to the South Side after spending the previous two seasons with the Cubs. The sidearming right-hander went 4-6 with a 2.95 ERA and seven saves in 70 appearances last season. The Sox have been one of baseball’s most active teams this winter, hoping to contend for the AL Central title after seven straight losing seasons.
