The Oilers had won nine of their first 10 games for the first time in franchise history. They went 0 for 2 on the power play after becoming the first team since Pittsburgh in 2007 to open a season with a power-play goal in 10 straight games. The Red Wings have won three straight and their rebuilding efforts seem to be paying off.

Marc-Andre Fleury made 42 saves and then two more stops in the shootout, and the Chicago Blackhawks won again under interim coach Derek King, topping the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2. King said he wanted the Blackhawks to have more fun, and they responded with dramatic victories in each of his first two games. Seth Jones and Jujhar Khaira scored in regulation for Chicago, which lost 5-2 at Pittsburgh on Oct. 16.

NHL – Canadiens’ G Price cites substance use for seeking help
Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price cites substance use as his reason for voluntarily entering the NHL’s player assistance program more than a month ago. Price issued a statement through the Canadiens and also posted it to his Instagram account, saying he let himself “get to a very dark place and I didn’t have the tools to cope with that struggle.” He said things had reached a point that he needed to prioritize his health for himself and his family.  Price rejoined the Canadiens on Sunday, but has yet to practice with the team.

NFL – Rodgers stands by remarks, admits being misleading on status
Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers says he stands behind the comments he made last week about why he didn’t get vaccinated for COVID-19 but acknowledges misleading some people about his status before testing positive. Rodgers spoke Tuesday on “The Pat McAfee Show" on YouTube and SiriusXM, four days after discussing on the same outlet his reasons for avoiding a vaccine. Hours after Rodgers spoke, the NFL fined the Packers $300,000 and issued $14,650 fines to Rodgers and wide receiver Allen Lazard for violations of league and players’ union protocols. The league found that Rodgers and Lazard attended a Halloween party while unmasked.

MLB – Baseball GMs move at usual, slow pace as lockout looms
Used to the often glacial pace of baseball free agency in recent winters, general managers are treating the threat of a work stoppage next month as not even a speedbump in the sport’s offseason. While other sports launch a free agent frenzy in the first few days of their business seasons, front-line baseball free agents increasingly delay decisions until spring training approaches. A lockout is likely when baseball’s labor contract expires Dec. 1, which would be the sport’s first work stoppage in 26 years.

MLB – Astros GM says Verlander ‘looks like himself’ on mound
Free agent ace Justin Verlander looked healthy and sharp at a showcase for scouts Monday, according to his former general manager with the Houston Astros. James Click said at Tuesday’s general manager meetings that Verlander “looks like himself” 13 months after having Tommy John surgery. The two-time Cy Young Award winner held a showcase for scouts from about 20 teams on Monday. New York Yankees GM Brian Cashman and Texas Rangers GM Chris Young confirmed Tuesday they were among the clubs with representatives on hand.

MLB – On the clock: Positive reviews for pitch clocks in minors
Famous for being counted in outs instead of minutes, baseball might soon be ready to go on the clock. Officials from Major League Baseball were encouraged by experiments with pitch clocks in the minor leagues this season, and executives at this week’s general manager meetings in Southern California have largely been on board with adopting a timer between pitches to help speed pace of play. The pitch clock was tested at Low-A West in 2021 and helped shrink the average time of nine-inning games to 2 hours, 41 minutes, compared to 3:02 in games without a clock.

MLB – Chicago Cubs hire Greg Brown as hitting coach
The Chicago Cubs have hired Greg Brown as their hitting coach. Brown is Chicago’s seventh hitting coach in 11 seasons. He replaces Anthony Iapoce, who departed after the Cubs hit .237 this year and finished with a 71-91 record. The 41-year-old Brown spent the past two seasons as the minor league hitting coordinator for Tampa Bay.

MHSAA – Profanity at finish disqualifies 2nd place Michigan runner
A Michigan high school runner who finished second in a state championship race was disqualified. Garrett Winter’s performance was scratched because he expressed four-letter words of joy as he crossed the finish line Saturday. Officials said his profanities at the end of the Division 2 race violated a national rule that governs conduct in high school running. Cody Inglis, assistant director of the Michigan High School Athletic Association, says there was no wiggle room. He says Winter’s words could be heard 50 yards away. Winter us a senior at Parchment High School. He says he wasn’t swearing at anyone but the words came from "pure adrenaline and emotion.”
