Former Cubs manager Jim Frey passed away over the weekend. Frey managed the Cubs to their first post season appearance since 1945 and led them to the 1984 National League East Division title. He spent two and a half years as manager of the North Siders, finishing with a 196-182 record. He later became general manager of the team. His cause of death was not released. He was 88.

 

The Chicago Bulls fired general manager Gar Forman yesterday, while officially hiring Denver Nuggets GM Arturas Karnisovas as their executive vice president of basketball operations. John Paxson has been moved into an advisory role. The future of Coach Jim Boylen remains unclear.

 

Damon “Snacks” Harrison revealed recently that, even though he’s still a free agent, it’s better than still being in Detroit. He said he never felt comfortable playing in Matt Patricia’s system even though he respected Patricia as a coach. He added that he never wanted to play for the Lions to begin with. After last season, he contemplated retirement, but there are indications that he wants to continue playing.

 

The Chicago Blackhawks have agreed to an entry-level contract with defenseman Ian Mitchell, one of their top prospects. The start date and average annual value for the three-year deal is up in the air because the suspension of the NHL season.

 

The Carolina Panthers have rewarded Christian McCaffrey for his production and versatility, making him the highest-paid running back in the NFL. He’s agreed to a four-year, $64 million contract extension.
The extension keeps McCaffrey tied to the Panthers through the 2025 season.

 

Waterford Mott’s Kobe Myers announced he’s committed to Michigan State. The 6-2 190 ponder was a multi-use player at Mott, being used at a Cornerback, Wide Receiver, and Kick Returner.

 

Ypsilanti Lincoln sophomore Emoni Bates has been named Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Bates becomes the first sophomore to ever win the award.
