NFL – Still in shock Lions win 2nd straight
Matthew Stafford had the ball and Matt Prater knew it was time to start kicking. Atlanta running back Todd Gurley gave Stafford a shot to lead the Detroit Lions to victory, and he took advantage. MLB – Dodgers 1 win from title after 32 years and more than $3.6B
Since Orel Hershiser struck out Oakland’s Tony Phillips for the final out of the 1988 World Series, the Los Angeles Dodgers have played 5,014 regular-season games and 113 more in the postseason in pursuit of their next title. They have spent $3.69 billion in player payroll over 32 seasons. One more win and that elusive seventh championship will be theirs. Tony Gonsolin starts Tuesday against the Rays’ Blake Snell and hopes to keep the World Series from reaching a Game 7 for the fourth time in five years. Walker Buehler would start Game 7 for the Dodgers.

NASCAR – NASCAR’s Cup playoff at Texas still on hold
NASCAR now hopes to resume its Cup Series playoff race at Texas Motor Speedway on Tuesday, but the forecast may not cooperate. Similar weather conditions were in the forecast for Tuesday and into Wednesday. The race was stopped on Sunday because of drizzle and misty conditions that allowed drivers to complete just 52 of 334 laps. Another 115 laps have to be completed to get to the halfway mark of 167 laps that would make Texas an official race.

NCAA Basketball – ESPN scrubs hoops tourneys slated for Orlando
ESPN won’t hold college basketball tournaments in a Florida bubble next month. ESPN Events issued a statement Monday saying it had “set out to create a protected environment” in Orlando, but those plans changed due to “certain challenges surrounding testing protocols.”  ESPN Events says it will resume those events next season. ESPN Events lists 10 college basketball tournaments and doubleheaders on its website originally scheduled for the upcoming season. Those events include the Champions Classic that annually features Duke, Kansas, Kentucky and Michigan State. They also include the Preseason NIT, the Jimmy V Classic and the Orlando Invitational.

NHL – NHL veteran Daley retires, joins Penguins front office
Longtime NHL defenseman Trevor Daley has retired to take a position in the Pittsburgh Penguins front office. Daley played 16 seasons in the NHL and helped the Penguins to consecutive Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017. The 37-year-old Daley spent the last three seasons with the Detroit Red Wings. He retires with 89 goals and 220 assists in 1,058 career games. The Penguins acquired Daley in December 2015, and his arrival coincided with a midseason makeover that helped propel the Penguins to the franchise’s fourth and fifth Stanley Cups. Pittsburgh also announced Monday that assistant general manager Jason Karmanos has been fired.

NHL – Stanley Cup visits children’s cancer center in Tampa
Even during a pandemic, the NHL champion Tampa Bay Lightning brought the Stanley Cup to a local children’s cancer center so that kids and their families could see and take pictures with the famed trophy. Fans couldn’t touch the Cup because of health and safety protocols, but the team was able to keep alive one of the sport’s greatest traditions of taking the Cup around to special locations in the winning city. In the process, Lightning players and the Cup brought joy to more than 20 families going through a harder fight than the competition to win hockey’s holy grail.

NCAA Football – No. 13 Michigan’s offense was ready for season opener
Even as Michigan closed the 2019 season with dispiriting losses to Ohio State and Alabama, there were some encouraging signs for the Wolverines on offense. Now Michigan has more evidence that coordinator Josh Gattis is making progress. The Wolverines began this pandemic-delayed 2020 season with a 49-24 rout of Minnesota on Saturday night. Quarterback Joe Milton was solid after taking over as the starter, and he was aided by a running game that produced 256 yards. The Wolverines moved up five spots to No. 13 in the AP poll after winning easily in perhaps the most anticipated game of the Big Ten’s opening week.

NCAA Football – Chryst wont discuss QB situation
Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst isn’t discussing quarterback Graham Mertz’s status following reports that the redshirt freshman has tested positive for COVID-19. Chryst did say he was confident the ninth-ranked Badgers’ game Saturday at Nebraska would go on as scheduled. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel and Wisconsin State Journal both reported that Mertz had tested positive. Big Ten protocols say that athletes who test positive through point-of-contact daily testing must take a polymerase chain reaction test to confirm the first result. The athlete can’t play again for at least 21 days if the PCR test confirms the first result.  ESPN is reporting that Wisconsin’s backup quarterback Chase Wolf also tested positive.

NCAA Football – Boilermakers coach plans to return this weekend
Purdue coach Jeff Brohm says he plans to return to the sideline Saturday at Illinois. Brohm has been in self-isolation for more than a week since testing positive for COVID-19. Big Ten rules require him to isolate for 10 days before returning to work. Brohm intends to return to the office Wednesday and coach this weekend. The bigger question surrounds All-American receiver Rondale Moore who missed last weekend’s game for undisclosed reasons. Brohm provided no additional details about Moore’s absence and says a decision about the receiver’s status for Illinois will be made later this week.

NCAA Football – SEC fines Lane Kiffin over officiating complaints
The Southeastern Conference has fined Mississippi coach Lane Kiffin $25,000 for his complaints about officiating on social media.T he league announced the fine on Monday, but also said the replay official should have stopped play to review the call after Mississippi’s fourth-quarter kickoff appeared to have touched the right hand of Shaun Shivers. The Rebels recovered in the end zone but the on-field call was that Shivers didn’t touch it and play wasn’t halted for a review. Kiffin retweeted one social media post calling the officiating “a disgrace.”
