Indians 6, Tigers 5 – Luplow’s catch preserves Indians’ 6-5 win over Tigers
Jordan Luplow made a diving catch on Eric Haase’s sinking liner to right field with the bases loaded, preserving a 6-5 victory for the Cleveland Indians over the Detroit Tigers. Luplow, who entered as a defensive replacement an inning earlier, made the catch look rather easy, but the ninth inning was anything but for closer Emmanuel Clase, who held on for his eighth save in nine chances. Spencer Turnbull allowed three runs in six innings for Detroit in his first game since pitching a no-hitter last week.

White Sox 5, Cardinals 1 – La Russa a winner vs old team, White Sox beat Cardinals 5-1
White Sox manager Tony La Russa wound up a winner in his first game against the team that ensured his Hall of Fame induction as Chicago beat the St. Louis Cardinals 5-1 behind Lance Lynn’s arm and Andrew Vaughn’s bat. The victory ended a three-game skid for the AL Central leaders, who were swept by the New York Yankees after winning 10 of 13. The NL Central-leading Cardinals dropped their second straight. Lynn held the Cardinals hitless for 5 1/3 innings. Vaughn hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the sixth. After winning a World Series in Oakland, La Russa guided the Cardinals to two World Series championships, three pennants and nine postseason appearances from 1996-2011.

MLB – Joe West poised to break umpiring record with 5,376th game
Joe West is poised to break baseball’s umpiring record when the St. Louis Cardinals visit the Chicago White Sox. West is set to work home plate for his 5,376th regular-season game, snapping a tie with Hall of Famer Bill Klem. The colorful West, who turns 69 on Oct. 31, is perhaps the most famous umpire in major league history, known for his memorable run-ins with several players and managers over the years, to go along with at least one executive. He also fashions himself as a country music singer and songwriter, leading to the nicknames “Cowboy Joe” and “Country Joe.”

NBA – Pacers still evaluating Bjorkgren before making decision
The Indiana Pacers are standing pat — for now. After missing the NBA playoffs for the first time in six years, president of basketball operations Kevin Pritchard says he’s still evaluating whether to bring back coach Nate Bjorkgren for a second season. Pritchard also says he’d rather not break up the roster and would prefer to see all those injured players get healthy for next season.

WNBA – Sun coach suspended, fined for comment about player’s weight
Connecticut Sun coach Curt Miller has apologized for in-game remarks he made to a referee about the weight of Las Vegas Aces’ post Liz Cambage. In a social media post following the Aces’ 72-65 loss to the Sun Sunday, Cambage said Miller had disrespected her during the game, saying she weighed 300 pounds while arguing whether a call should have gone the Sun’s way. Cambage said she will never let a man disrespect her. Miller issued a statement Monday apologizing to Cambage and the Aces organization.

NFL – Stafford’s thumb fine, outlook bright in 1st Rams offseason
Matthew Stafford says his offseason thumb surgery isn’t an impediment to anything he wants to do during his first offseason workouts with the Los Angeles Rams. Learning a new offense and getting to know every player in the Rams’ locker room present more than enough challenges for the veteran passer, but he’s confident he has enough time to get everything done. And after the NFL missed out on most offseason team work last spring due to the coronavirus pandemic, Stafford is grateful he picked this year to switch teams.

NFL – Green Bay QB Rodgers doesn’t attend Packers’ 1st day of OTAs
Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers wasn’t present for the first day of organized team activities. These OTA sessions are voluntary, but Rodgers generally has participated in them in the past. ESPN first reported Rodgers wasn’t with the team on Monday. Rodgers’ decision not to participate this time comes amid reports that the reigning MVP doesn’t want to return to the Packers. General manager Brian Gutekunst has said he has no plans to trade Rodgers.

NCAA – Ex-MSU star Keith Appling arrested in homicide investigation
Police say a former Michigan State University basketball star has been arrested in the fatal shooting of a 66-year-old man in Detroit. Keith Appling was arrested Monday in Chelsea, 60 miles west of Detroit. A gun was recovered. Police say he’s accused of shooting the man during an argument Saturday night. Appling, a prep star at Detroit Pershing, played for Michigan State from 2010 to 2014. He also played basketball overseas and had two brief contracts with the NBA’s Orlando Magic.

NCAA – Yost’s name might be removed from Univ. of Michigan arena
A committee is proposing that the University of Michigan remove Fielding Yost’s name from the campus ice arena. The proposal comes after a review of Fielding Yost’s work, including his refusal to let a Black football player play a Southern school in 1934. Yost spent about 40 years in Ann Arbor as football coach or athletic director and sometimes both. Yost refused to let Willis Ward play against Georgia Tech, a response to the demand by that school. An advisory committee on university history says the benching of Ward “was not an aberration” but epitomized a long series of actions against racial integration of campus sports.

Soccer – Court order would allow 15-year-old to sign with NSWL team
A federal judge has granted a temporary restraining order that allows a 15-year old player to sign with a National Women’s Soccer League team. The order comes in a lawsuit filed on behalf of Olivia Moultrie challenging the league’s rule prohibiting players under 18. The lawsuit alleges the rule violates antitrust law and hinders Moultrie’s career development and chances of reaching the U.S. national team. U.S. District Judge Karin J. Immergut’s order will be in in place for 14 days. It’s unclear whether any NWSL team will sign Moultrie, who currently trains with the league’s Portland Thorns.

Golf – PGA apologizes to Mickelson, Koepka for fans on final hole
PGA of America CEO Seth Waugh has apologized to winner Phil Mickelson and Brooks Koepka for fans rushing onto the 18th hole at the PGA Championship on Sunday. After Mickelson landed his second shot on the green, spectators swept past the ropes, marshals and security and swarmed both players and their caddies as they walked to the green. Waugh said player safety is the organization’s priority and that the organization regretted the situation made Mickelson, Koepka and their caddies feel vulnerable. Koepka said his surgically repaired right knee was hurt by onrushing fans as he tried to go forward.

Olympics – US warns against all travel to Japan as Olympics loom
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the State Department are warning Americans against all travel to Japan because of a surge in coronavirus cases in the country as it prepares to host the Olympics in just two months. The twin alerts issued Monday don’t ban U.S. citizens from visiting the country, but they could have an impact on insurance rates for travelers and may factor into decisions by Olympic athletes and spectators on whether to compete in or attend the games, which are due to start in July. The United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee said it still anticipates that American athletes will be able to safely compete.
