Cardinals 2-6/Tigers 1-11 – Pérez homers from both sides of plate in Tigers 11-6 win over Cardinals to split DH
Wenceel Pérez hit homers from both sides of the plate to help the Detroit Tigers beat the St. Louis Cardinals 11-6 Tuesday night to split a doubleheader. The 24-year-old Dominican became the first rookie to clear the fences for the franchise hitting right and left handed in the same game since Raúl Casanova in 1996. In the opener, Jack Flaherty tied an American League record with seven straight strikeouts to start a game and struck out a career-high 14 before St. Louis rallied against a usually strong bullpen with a two-run ninth inning to beat Detroit 2-1.
Mets 4, Cubs 2 – DJ Stewart hits a 3-run homer to lead the Mets past the Cubs 4-2
DJ Stewart hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the sixth inning to lift the New York Mets to a 4-2 win over the Chicago Cubs. Stewart had just three hits in his previous 23 at-bats before homering into the second deck in right field against Adbert Alzolay to give New York a 4-1 lead. Stewart gazed toward the home dugout before flipping his bat like a baton upon beginning his trot. Sean Reid-Foley tossed a hitless sixth for the win. Jorge López earned his second save after giving up a run in the ninth.
Twins 6, White Sox 5 – Kepler lifts Twins over White Sox 6-5 for team’s first 9-game win streak in 16 years
Max Kepler drove in the tiebreaking run in the ninth inning for the second straight game, this time hitting a sacrifice fly, and the Minnesota Twins won their ninth in a row, 6-5 over the Chicago White Sox. Chicago’s Andrew Benintendi homered leading off the eighth to tie it at 5 after Minnesota scored twice in the top half. But the Twins pulled it out in the ninth. Byron Buxton walked and took third on Manuel Margot’s single. Kepler then put Minnesota on top with a sacrifice fly to center.

Portis had the highest point total of his playoff career and added 10 rebounds to make amends two nights after he got ejected from a Game 4 loss. NFL – After a strong first round, overall NFL draft ratings down 3% from last year
After posting strong numbers for the first round, viewership for the NFL draft was down 3% from last year on TV and digital platforms. The draft averaged 5.74 million viewers for the three days this year across ABC, ESPN, ESPN2 and NFL Network after averaging 5.93 million in 2023 according to the league and Nielsen. The first round, where six quarterbacks were selected, averaged 12.1 million viewers, a 6% increase over last year. It was the highest day one viewership since 2021, when there was an average audience of 12.6 million. The last two days saw a drop-off though, with a dearth of compelling storylines.
Horse – Kentucky Derby deaths bring changes ahead of the 150th event
Many in the crowd that packed Churchill Downs for last year’s Kentucky Derby left in tears and questioning the safety of horse racing after two horses died that day. Ten more died in the days surrounding the race. As a result, the track made several changes to its safety program ahead of Saturday’s 150th Derby. There are more veterinarians on site and out-of-competition testing. The track’s dirt surface is now deeper and more cushiony, although multiple investigations found no single factor caused the spate of deaths. Every horse racing at Churchill also has a biometric sensor to help spot signs of a potential injury.
ACL injuries are more common in women soccer players than men. We may learn why
An English study into the causes of ACL injuries to women soccer players has been launched. ‘Project ACL’ will focus on players in the Women’s Super League in England as part of a three-year study. The injury is suffered by a disproportionate number of female players compared to their male counterparts. Organizers of the project say women are two to six times more likely than men to suffer ACL injuries. The project is a joint partnership between FIFPRO, the Professional Footballers Association, Nike and Leeds Beckett University.
NCAAMBB – St. John’s Ledlum and Dingle suing NCAA for denying them 2024-25 eligibility
St. John’s basketball players Chris Ledlum and Jordan Dingle have filed a lawsuit against the NCAA for denying their request for an eligibility waiver that would give them one more season of competition. The lawsuit in Queens (New York) Supreme Court contends the NCAA unfairly denied the players their fifth years under the COVID-19 waiver granted to athletes whose 2019-20 seasons were disrupted by the pandemic. Ledlum transferred to St. John’s from Harvard and Dingle from Penn before last season. Ledlum and Dingle also lost the 2020-21 season because the Ivy League opted to have no sports competition that academic year.
Boxing – Terms for Tyson’s fight with Jake Paul include heavier gloves, shorter rounds
Mike Tyson’s fight against Jake Paul in Texas this summer has been sanctioned as a competitive boxing match rather than an exhibition. The rounds will be shorter and the gloves will be heavier. The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation this week approved terms for the July 20 fight at AT&T Stadium in Arlington. Netflix will provide live coverage of the bout between the 27-year-old Paul, a social media star-turned-boxer, and 57-year-old Tyson, who hasn’t fought since an exhibition against Roy Jones Jr. in November 2020.
