Blue Jays 4, Tigers 3 – 10 Innings – Blue Jays rally in 9th, beat Tigers in 10 on Springer’s hit
George Springer singled home the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning and the Toronto Blue Jays rallied past Detroit 4-3, handing the Tigers their sixth consecutive defeat. Toronto erased a two-run deficit in the ninth on sacrifice flies by Whit Merrifield and pinch-hitter Alejandro Kirk after reliever Trey Wingenter loaded the bases. Springer’s single up the middle off José Cisnero scored automatic runner Danny Jansen, who advanced from second to third on Kevin Kiermaier’s sacrifice bunt. Kevin Gausman struck out 11 in eight innings for the Blue Jays, who have won seven of eight. Detroit took a 3-1 lead on Kerry Carpenter’s two-run homer in the seventh. Nick Maton also homered for the Tigers.

Twins 3, White Sox 1 – Gray, Twins take series with 3-1 win vs. White Sox
Sonny Gray threw five scoreless innings in a third strong start to open the season for the Minnesota Twins. He outdueled Lucas Giolito to beat the Chicago White Sox 3-1. The Twins won their third series out of four behind another sharp performance from a rotation that ranks second in the majors in ERA. Gray is 2-0 with a 0.53 ERA. Giolito gave up one run in six innings and dropped to 0-1. Gray pitched through an upper respiratory virus. Twins shortstop Kyle Farmer was hit in the face by a pitch from Giolito and is scheduled for oral surgery.

Mariners 5, Cubs 2 – Kelenic’s 482-foot homer helps Mariners beat Cubs 5-2
Logan Gilbert pitched 6 2/3 innings of four-hit ball, Teoscar Hernández and Jarred Kelenic hit consecutive home runs in the eighth and the Seattle Mariners snapped a three-game losing streak by beating the Chicago Cubs 5-2. Kelenic’s homer landed in the upper center field bleachers and traveled 482 feet, the second-longest at Wrigley Field since Statcast began tracking in 2015 and trailing only Willson Contreras’ 491-footer in Game 4 of the 2017 NL Championship Series. Chicago had beaten Seattle seven consecutive times dating to July 31, 2016.

MLB – Happ, Cubs agree to $61 million, 3-year contract for 2024-26
All-Star outfielder Ian Happ and the Chicago Cubs agreed to a $61 million, three-year contract covering 2024-26. Happ agreed in January to a $10.85 million, one-year contract. His new deal calls for a $3 million signing bonus payable June 1 and salaries of $20 million in both 2024 and 2025, and $18 million in 2026. He gets a full no-trade provision and a hotel suite on road trips. The 28-year-old would have been eligible for free agency after this year’s World Series. Happ is hitting .282 with one home run and six RBIs.

MLB – MLB teams extend beer sales after pitch clock shortens games
Thanks to the pitch clock, the action is moving much faster at Major League Baseball games. It also means a little less time for fans to enjoy a frosty adult beverage. To combat that time crunch, at least four teams — the Arizona Diamondbacks, Texas Rangers, Minnesota Twins and Milwaukee Brewers — have extended alcohol sales through the eighth inning this season. Teams historically have stopped selling alcohol after the seventh. MLB games have been considerably shorter this season, largely thanks to a series of rule changes. Through the first 1 1/2 weeks of the season, the average game time was down 31 minutes, on track to be the sport’s lowest since 1984.

Bulls 109, Raptors 105 – LaVine scores 39, Bulls beat Raptors 109-105 in play-in game
Zach LaVine scored 39 points, DeMar DeRozan had 23 against his former team and the Chicago Bulls overcame a 19-point deficit to beat the Toronto Raptors 109-105 in a play-in tournament game. The Bulls will visit the Miami Heat on Friday night for the chance to earn the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference playoff bracket, and a first-round playoff matchup with the Milwaukee Bucks. Nikola Vucevic had 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Bulls, who trailed 66-47 in the third quarter. Fred VanVleet had 26 points and 12 rebounds and Pascal Siakam scored 32 points but Toronto’s season ended in disappointment.

Thunder 123, Pelicans 118 – Gilgeous-Alexander leads Thunder past Pelicans in play-in
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander highlighted his 32-point night with a go-ahead baseline jumper and four clutch free throws in the final 29 seconds, and the Oklahoma City Thunder defeated the New Orleans Pelicans 123-118 to remain alive in the Western Conference play-in tourament. Josh Giddey had 31 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds for Oklahoma City, the only Western Conference team to advance to the postseason with a losing record. NBA – Shout it out: DeRozan’s daughter goes viral in play-in game
Diar DeRozan wanted to skip a day of school. Her father grudgingly went along with the plan. Turns out, the decision was worth shouting about. The 9-year-old daughter of Chicago guard DeMar DeRozan stole the show at the play-in tournament on Wednesday night. Her shrieks from the stands went viral, and quite possibly played in a role in helping the Bulls defeat the Toronto Raptors 109-105 in an Eastern Conference elimination game.  Her ear-splitting shouts would come when the Raptors — her dad’s former team — were shooting free throws, and they were loud enough to even become a conversation point during the ESPN broadcast of the game. The Raptors finished 18 of 36 from the line in their season-ending loss.

Warren worked for the Minnesota Vikings before taking over for Jim Delany and becoming the Big Ten’s first Black commissioner in 2019. Petitti has long background in television. He has held senior executive roles at CBS Sports and ABC Sports.

NCAAMBB – Michigan State’s Izzo says a few players could enter draft
Michigan State coach Tom Izzo said “a bunch of guys” in college basketball are putting their names in the NBA draft. Izzo said Wednesday a few Spartans may join the trend, declaring themselves eligible to at least be evaluated for the draft with an opportunity to withdrawal from it in June. Izzo said Jaden Akins, A.J. Hoggard and Tyson Walker could enter the draft. If all three of the Spartans’ standout guards return, Izzo will have a talented and experienced team that will get a boost from a top recruiting classes that includes a pair of McDonald’s All-America selections.
