Red Wings 3, Capitals 2 – OT – Red Wings erase two-goal deficit, beat Capitals in overtime

Maple Leafs 3, Blackhawks 2 – OT – Maple Leafs snap losing streak in 3-2 OT win over Blackhawks
William Nylander scored in overtime to lift the Toronto Maple Leafs over the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 on Wednesday. NHL – ‘Animalism’: Blackhawks scandal raises culture questions
The former player at the heart of the Chicago Blackhawks assault scandal has come forward publicly. Kyle Beach tells TSN he felt “alone and dark” in the days following the alleged assault in 2010.  Earlier this week, a report detailed how senior team leaders badly mishandled Beach’s allegations that an assistant coach sexually assaulted him. The ramifications now stretch beyond Chicago. Florida coach Joel Quenneville is slated to meet with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman on Thursday. Winnipeg general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff also is planning to talk to the commissioner next week. Both were with the Blackhawks when the allegations were first reported to team leadership.

NHL – Quenneville’s meeting with Bettman may decide fate in Florida
The Panthers are rolling this season but coach Joel Quenneville being named in a report detailing how the Chicago Blackhawks mishandled sexual assault allegations that an assistant on his staff sexually assaulted a player during the team’s Stanley Cup run in 2010 could derail Florida’s hopes. Quenneville was back on the ice with the Panthers on Wednesday. He’s going to sit with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman on Thursday, a meeting that’ll probably determine his coaching future. The Panthers believe they have a Stanley Cup contender and say that continues to be their focus.

Astros 7, Braves 2 – World Siri: Rookie propels Astros past Braves to tie Series
Rookie Jose Siri sparked a team whose biggest stars took a while to shine, sending the Houston Astros to a 7-2 victory over the Atlanta Braves that evened the World Series at one game apiece. Jose Altuve doubled early, homered late and scored twice to break out at the plate. Siri’s speed and aggressive play created havoc on the bases, leading to a four-run second inning that helped the Astros snap a five-game skid at home in the World Series.

MLB – World Series opener viewers up 17.5% over last year’s low
Atlanta’s 6-2 victory over Houston in World Series Game 1 drew an average of 10,811,000 viewers on Fox, up 17.5% from the record low of 9,195,000 for the Los Angeles Dodgers’ opening 8-3 win over Tampa Bay last year. The Braves-Astros number was the second-lowest total to start a Series. Fox said Tuesday night’s game averaged 11,077,000 viewers combined for Fox, Fox Deportes for Spanish-language coverage and Fox’s streaming apps. The game was the most-streamed opener at 273,619, an increase of 82%. Before last year, the low for an opener had been San Francisco’s 7-1 win over Kansas City in 2014.

MLB – Which Cleveland Guardians? Roller derby team sues MLB team
A Cleveland-area roller derby team that has called itself the Guardians since 2013 is suing Cleveland’s newly renamed Major League Baseball team to stop it from using the Guardians name. The Cleveland Indians announced in July it would change the team’s name to Guardians for the 2022 season after years of criticism that the name and Chief Wahoo logo was racist. The roller derby team in a lawsuit filed Wednesday in federal court in Cleveland says the baseball team changed the name despite knowing the roller derby team was using it. The Indians in a statement said team officials don’t think there’s a conflict.

NFL – Raiders owner: Team wasn’t targeted in email investigation
Las Vegas Raiders owner Mark Davis says he doesn’t believe the team was targeted in the leaking of emails that led to the resignation of coach Jon Gruden. Speaking after the NFL owners meetings ended Wednesday, Davis also acknowledged the team has reached a settlement with Gruden, who received a 10-year, $100 million contract to return to coach the team in 2018. He did not reveal terms of the settlement. Davis wondered about the timing of the leaking of the emails; the NFL has not and will not be releasing documents from the independent investigation of the Washington Football Team, saying the league is protecting the identities of those who testified.

Of his 414 season receiving yards, 153 have come on the team’s first offensive drive of the game. FIFA – 5 subs in soccer matches to be allowed on a permanent basis
Soccer’s lawmakers have recommended that the temporary move to give teams the option of making five substitutions per game instead of three should take effect on a permanent basis. The measure was introduced in May 2020 so teams could cope better with the congested schedule when soccer resumed following a suspension due to the coronavirus. In May, it was extended for a further 18 months until the end of 2022 when the World Cup in Qatar will be completed. The International Football Association Board’s advisory panel says there had been “a number of requests from confederations, associations, leagues and other key stakeholders for this option to be introduced permanently.”

Olympics – Beijing confirms strict ‘closed loop’ for Winter Olympics
China says participants in next year’s Winter Olympics will be strictly isolated from the general population and could face expulsion for violating COVID-19 restrictions. Beijing 2022 organizing committee official Zhang Jiandong says those taking part in the Winter Games beginning Feb. 4 must remain in a “closed loop” for accommodation, training, competing, transport and dining. An Olympic bubble has long been on the books but Beijing has now made the restrictions official as part of its zero tolerance approach to the pandemic. Participants will also have to undergo regular testing for the coronavirus before and during the Games. China has largely eliminated local transmission of COVID-19, although dozens of new cases have appeared in recent days countrywide.

Olympics – WADA says Ukraine routinely violated rules for doping tests
Ukraine’s national anti-doping agency has been accused of giving athletes advance notice of test collections and deliberately mislabeling samples to avoid stricter analysis before the Tokyo Olympics. The World Anti-Doping Agency says it conducted a two-year investigation that found “convincing and corroborated evidence” that the Ukrainian agency NADC routinely violated standard testing practices. WADA says NADC broke the rules by making advanced-notice sample collections after giving them appointments at its offices for doping tests. Such tests are supposed to be conducted during unannounced visits to the athletes. WADA also says NADC knowingly mislabeled at least six doping samples as out-of-competition tests when they had been taken during competitions.
