NFL – Bears move closer to leaving Soldier Field for the suburbs
The Chicago Bears took a major step toward moving out of their longtime home at Soldier Field and into the suburbs by signing a purchase agreement for Arlington Park about 30 miles northwest of the city. The team made the announcement in a news release and Churchill Downs Incorporated, which owns the property officially known as Arlington International Racecourse, announced that the sale price was $197.2 million. Team president Ted Phillips says that “much work remains to be completed” before the deal can be finalized. Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s office says it remains open to discussions to keep the team from leaving what has been its lakefront home since 1971.

NFL – Nagy not saying who Bears’ starting QB will be against Lions
Bears coach Matt Nagy was not ready to say who the starting quarterback will be when Chicago hosts the Detroit Lions. He says veteran Andy Dalton remains the No. 1 signal-caller followed by rookie Justin Fields and Nick Foles. But it’s unclear who will start this week. Nagy says that “will be sorted out once we have a clearer picture” on the health of his top two quarterbacks. Both were expected to practice Wednesday in some capacity. Nagy would not say, either, if he will continue to call plays on offense. Chicago had 47 yards in a 26-6 loss at Cleveland last week.

Twins 5, Tigers 2 – Polanco, Pineda help Twins beat Tigers 5-2
Jorge Polanco launched a three-run homer and Michael Pineda was solid in his last start of the year as the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 5-2. Minnesota began the game with three hits against right-hander Casey Mize. After singles by Luis Arraez and Byron Buxton, Polanco took Mize deep to center field on the first pitch. Polanco’s 32nd homer of the season gave him 94 RBIs, both team highs. Pineda allowed one run and scattered eight hits over 5 2/3 innings in what could be his final game with the Twins. The veteran right-hander can become a free agent this offseason. He finished with a 3.62 ERA in 22 games after making just five starts in 2020.

White Sox 6, Reds 1 – Rodón returns as White Sox beat Reds for 4th straight win
Carlos Rodón pitched five scoreless innings in a closely watched start ahead of the playoffs, and the Chicago White Sox beat the Cincinnati Reds 6-1. Tim Anderson and Gavin Sheets homered as the White Sox moved a season-high 23 games above .500 with their fourth consecutive victory. Rodón allowed one hit, struck out four and walked two in his first start since he lasted just three innings in a 4-3 loss at Detroit on Sept. 20. The left-hander reported some arm soreness after his previous outing that he described as normal, but it drew some concern from manager Tony La Russa.

Cubs 3, Pirates 2 – Contreras 3 RBIs, Cubs beat Pirates, end 7-game losing skid
Willson Contreras drove in all of the Cubs’ run as Chicago beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-2 to end a seven-game losing streak. Contreras’ two-run double high off the right-field wall in the seventh inning rallied the Cubs from a 2-1 deficit. He also accounted for the game’s first run with a long sacrifice fly to center field in the fifth. Pittsburgh fell to 59-99, putting the Pirates on the brink of the ninth 100-loss season in franchise history.

MLB – White Sox SS Tim Anderson suspended for contact with umpire
White Sox shortstop Tim Anderson has been suspended for three games and fined for making contact with umpire Tim Timmons during Monday’s 8-7 win at Detroit. Anderson made contact with Timmons during the ninth inning against the Tigers, according to the release from MLB. The White Sox are headed to the postseason after clinching the AL Central title. Anderson is allowed to keep playing while the appeal process plays out, so his suspension could wait until next year.

NBA – NBA ready to harness unvaccinated players
The NBA has released tentative health and safety protocols to its teams, detailing a host of restrictions and rules for players who haven’t gotten the COVID-19 vaccination.  Most restrictions are designed to prevent unvaccinated players from frequenting local establishments and keeping them cloistered from their teammates away from the court.  League spokesman Mike Bass says any player who elects not to comply with local vaccination mandates will not be paid for games missed. Bass also acknowledged that any vaccine mandate needs to be approved by the NBA Players Association.

NBA – NBA OKs replay alterations
The NBA Board of Governors has approved changes to the league’s instant replay rules on a one-year trial basis for the upcoming season.  The NBA has eliminated referee-initiated replay review of out-of-bounds violations during the last two minutes of the fourth quarter and the final two minutes of any overtime period. The league has also extended the coach’s challenge so that teams can trigger replay review of out-of-bounds violations throughout the entire game.

NCAAFB – Bearcats coming: Marcus Freeman, Irish defense on the spot
No. 7 Cincinnati visits No. 9 Notre Dame on Saturday in a key game for both teams if they hope to crash the College Football Playoff. The Fighting Irish defensive coordinator is Marcus Freeman. He is new this year. He spent the past four seasons in the same job at Cincinnati and will now be trying to stop the Bearcats. The Irish defense struggled the first two games, but has improved each week and has now held the past two opponents two 13 points each. The Bearcats present the biggest challenge yet.

NCAAFB – NLRB: College football players are employees, can unionize
The National Labor Relations Board says college football players and some other athletes in money-making sports are employees of their schools. The guidance in a memo from the board’s top lawyer could lead to expansive rights for players to unionize and negotiate over their working conditions.  NLRB General Counsel Jennifer Abruzzo also threatened action against schools, conferences and the NCAA if they continue to use the term “student-athlete.” She says the term was designed to obscure the employment relationship with college athletes and discourage them from pursuing their rights.

NCAABKB – NCAA to start using ‘March Madness’ for women’s tournament
The NCAA women’s basketball tournament will start using “March Madness” in marketing and branding beginning this season. Using the phrase, which has been associated with the men’s tournament for years, was one of the recommendations stemming from an external review of gender equity issues of the tournaments. It’s still unclear exactly how March Madness will be incorporated into the women’s tournament, but putting the slogan on the court would be a possible starting place. The tournament last season simply had “Women’s Basketball” on its court.
