Paul Goldschmidt homered twice and scored the game-ending run on Lars Nootbaar’s single in the 10th inning as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Detroit Tigers 3-2. Goldschmidt was intentionally walked to open the 10th and executed a one-out double steal with automatic runner Tommy Edman. Nolan Arenado was intentionally walked. After a fielder’s choice for the second out, Nootbaar lined a single to right field off Michael Fulmer and St. Louis improved to 11-5 in extra innings. Harold Castro tied it for Detroit in the ninth with a soft single to center off Cardinals closer Alex Reyes.
Blue Jays 3, White Sox 1 – Ray fans 14, Kirk gets winning hit, Jays beat White Sox 3-1
Alejandro Kirk broke a tie with an RBI single in the eighth inning and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Chicago White Sox 3-1 Wednesday night. After Blue Jays starter Robbie Ray matched his career high by striking out 14 over seven innings, Tim Mayza worked a perfect eighth for the victory and Jordan Romano finished for his 13th save in 14 chances. Ray is the first left-hander in Blue Jays history to strike out 14 in a game. AL Central-leading Chicago lost for the fourth time in five games.
Cubs 5, Rockies 2 – Rockies 13, Cubs 10 – McMahon goes deep in 10th, Rox split long twinbill with Cubs
Ryan McMahon lofted a two-run homer in the 10th inning, Brendan Rodgers followed with a two-run double that gave him five RBIs for the game, and the Colorado Rockies rallied to beat the Chicago Cubs 13-10 and split a doubleheader. The Cubs won the opener 5-2 in a tidy 2 hours, 9 minutes, thanks to Patrick Wisdom’s tiebreaking three-run homer in the fifth inning. The nightcap lasted exactly twice as long — 4:18 — as the teams combined to play 17 innings. McMahon hit a high drive off Jake Jewell that landed with a thud in the basket in left for his 19th homer.

MLB – 2022 Season will be Molina’s last
Yadier Molina says he will end his major league playing career when his current contract expires after next season. Molina announced the decision a day after he accepted a one-year, $10 million contract extension for the 2022 season. The 10-time All Star and nine-time Gold Glove winner has spent his entire career in the Cardinals organization since the team drafted him in the fourth round of the 2000 MLB draft. Molina this season joined Yogi Berra and Johnny Bench as the only catchers in major league history to record 2,000 hits and play in 2,000 games with one team.

Players at the Little League World Series this year may not be playing live in front of crowds of thousands, but they have some major league fans. Ties between MLB and the Little League tournament go back decades and this year is no exception when it comes to major leaguers offering their support. Former Little League star and free agent third baseman Todd Frazier was in the stands this week, cheering for his nephew and the same New Jersey team that Frazier led to the tournament title in 1998. Other MLB players have tweeted support and visited or Zoomed with Little Leaguers.
NFL – Only vaccinated personnel in locker rooms on NFL game days
The NFL has mandated that only fully vaccinated personnel — with a maximum of 50 people — will have access to locker rooms while players are present on game days. That’s according to a memo sent to the 32 teams and obtained by The Associated Press. The personnel covered by the policy includes coaches, athletic trainers, equipment staffers, one general manager, one team security representative, three club communications media workers and one clubhouse support staffer. Players are not required to be vaccinated against COVID-19, but the NFL has reported that well over 90% of them are. While the NFL has returned to in-person media availabilities, none will be in locker rooms.
NCAAFB – Preview – No. 9 Notre Dame out to score more points with new QB, line
No. 9 Notre Dame is eager to increase its scoring. The Fighting Irish averaged 33.4 points per game last season and made another trip to the College Football Playoff. The problem s that the last three national champions have averaged more than 44 points per game. Notre Dame has a new quarterback in Jack Coan and is replacing four of five starters on the offensive line. Still, offensive coordinator Tommy Rees says there is a lot of talent on offense and he feels confident. The season opener is Sept. 5 at Florida State.
FIFA – FIFA reduces penalty on Mexico for anti-gay chants at games
Mexican soccer officials say the world soccer body has agreed to reduce Mexico’s punishment for anti-gay chants heard during the Olympic qualifying matches in March. The Mexican soccer federation said Wednesday that it had been notified by FIFA that Mexico’s men team will have to play only one game without fans, instead of two as was originally imposed. The ban will be applied Sept. 2, when Mexico’s national team plays Jamaica at the beginning of the region’s World Cup qualifiers. The game will take place at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
Tennis – US Open – No masks, vax proof to see matches at full-capacity US Open
Spectators will not be required to wear masks or show proof of their vaccination status to attend matches at the U.S. Open when the tennis tournament returns at full capacity next week. A year ago, all fans were banned from the event because of the coronavirus pandemic. A member of the U.S. Tennis Association’s advisory group said Wednesday the goal is to prevent a COVID-19 outbreak and not to prevent all cases of the illness. The year’s last Grand Slam tournament starts Monday in New York. Its virus protocols are based on what has been laid out by the CDC and the New York City Department of Public Health.
Tennis – US Open – Serena Williams pulls out of US Open, citing torn hamstring
The U.S. Open will be played without two of the top US women. Serena Williams has pulled out of the year’s last Grand Slam tournament because of a torn hamstring. Fifth-ranked Sofia Kenin will miss the event due to a positive test for COVID-19, even though she said she has received a vaccine. Williams hasn’t competed since injuring her right leg during her first-round match at Wimbledon in late June. She turns 40 next month. Hampered by a foot injury, Kenin has not played since a second-round loss at Wimbledon on June 30. She joins a lengthy list of past major champions who have withdrawn from the U.S. Open. The Americans join Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in sitting out the competition in Flushing Meadows.
