Tigers 6, Red Sox 5 – F/10 – Candelario homers as Tigers beat Red Sox 6-5 in 10 innings
Jeimer Candelario hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the 10th inning, and the Detroit Tigers held off the Boston Red Sox for a 6-5 victory. Robbie Grossman began the Detroit 10th on second and advanced to third on Jonathan Schoop’s leadoff single. Candelario then went deep against Garrett Whitlock, sending a drive to right for his third homer. Boston got two back in the bottom half. Marwin Gonzalez singled in Xander Bogaerts and eventually came around to score on an error on second baseman Willi Castro. But Michael Fulmer retired Bobby Dalbec and Kiké Hernández for his first career save.

Reds 1, White Sox 0 – F/10 – Votto breaks thumb as Reds beat White Sox 1-0 in 10 innings
Cincinnati’s Joey Votto fractured his left thumb during a 10-inning, 1-0 win over the Chicago White Sox. Votto was hit by a Dallas Keuchel pitch in the fourth inning. Votto remained in the game, but in the sixth was replaced at first base by Kyle Farmer. Votto is not expected to need surgery but could miss up to a month. Jesse Winker hit a winning single in the 10th inning after Chicago’s Leury García was caught stealing in the top half.

Cubs 6, Dodgers 5 – F/11 – Rizzo hits winning single in 11th, Cubs beat Dodgers 6-5
Anthony Rizzo capped a two-run 11th inning with an RBI single, and the Chicago Cubs beat the struggling Los Angeles Dodgers 6-5 to complete a three-game sweep. Chicago’s Matt Duffy tied it when he drove in Willson Contreras with a two-out single against Garrett Cleavinger. Duffy stole third and pinch-hitter Tony Wolters walked before Rizzo singled on a sharp grounder to left. He was mobbed by teammates as he ran off the field. The Dodgers lost for the 13th time in 17 games.

White Sox at Cubs are off

MLB – La Russa’s extra-inning gaffe stings White Sox in loss
Hall of Famer manager Tony La Russa’s second stint with the Chicago White Sox is off to a bumpy start. And a decision during a 1-0 loss at Cincinnati will only raise more doubts about whether he is the right person for the job. La Russa acknowledged he was unaware of a rule that would have allowed him to use José Abreu as the automatic runner at second base rather than closer Liam Hendriks in the 10th inning. La Russa says ““I’ll re-read that situation.” The pandemic rule states the runner must be the batter preceding that inning’s leadoff hitter, but there is an exception if it would be the pitcher.

MLB – Cubs’ reliever Strop opts for free agency
Cubs reliever Pedro Strop has opted for free agency after spending most of the season at Chicago’s alternate site. The 35-year-old Strop was a key member of the Cubs’ bullpen from 2013 to 2019 before signing with Cincinnati prior to the 2020 season. He was released by the Reds in August and agreed to minor league deal with the Cubs a few days later, though he did not pitch in the majors again last season. He returned to the Cubs on a minor league deal in February and made two appearances before being returned to the team’s alternate site in South Bend, Indiana, on April 17.

MLB – O’s Means throws MLB’s 3rd no-hitter of season, tops M’s 6-0
John Means threw the major leagues’ third no-hitter this season and came within a wild pitch on a third strike of a perfect game, pitching the Baltimore Orioles over the Seattle Mariners 6-0. Means struck out 12 and walked none. Seattle’s runner was Sam Haggerty after he struck out swinging on a curveball in the dirt on a 1-2 count with one outs in the third inning that bounced away from catcher Pedro Severino. Haggerty was thrown out attempting to steal second. Means threw 79 strikes among 113 pitches, including first-pitch strikes to 26 of 27 batters.

NFL – AP source: Lions releasing running back Kerryon Johnson; sign Fells
A person familiar with the situation says the Detroit Lions are releasing running back Kerryon Johnson. The person spoke Wednesday night on condition of anonymity because the team had not announced the move. Detroit drafted the former Auburn standout in the second round in 2018. Johnson became expendable after the Lions drafted D’Andre Swift in 2020, signed free agent running back Jamaal Williams in March and drafted Oregon State’s Jermar Jefferson last week. Johnson ran for 1,225 yards and eight touchdowns over three seasons. He ran for just 181 yards and two scores on 52 carries last season.  The Lions have signed tight end Darren Fells, giving the team another veteran at the position to go with Pro Bowl tight end T.J. Hockenson. Fells has 123 catches with 1,483 yards receiving and 21 touchdowns in 102 NFL games.

NFL – NFL reminds teams are off the hook if injury occurs off-site
The Associated Press has obtained a memo from the NFL that reminds NFL teams that they aren’t obligated to honor contracts of players who get hurt working out on their own away from team facilities. The memo was spurred by the torn Achilles tendon suffered by Broncos tackle Ja’Wuan James this week while working out off-site. That injury puts his $10 million salary for 2021 in jeopardy. NFL players from several teams including the Broncos announced last month they were boycotting voluntary offseason workouts at team facilities over COVID-19 concerns.

NWSL – 15-year-old sues for right to play in NWSL
A 15-year-old soccer player has sued for the right to play in the National Women’s Soccer League, which doesn’t allow players under 18. The lawsuit filed in Portland, Oregon, on behalf of Olivia Moultrie alleges the league’s age rule violates antitrust law and also hinders her career development and chances of reaching the U.S. national team. Moultrie is asking for a preliminary injunction that would her allow to play in the league, which opens the regular season on May 15.
