NCAAMBKB – ‘I’ve done this before’: Martelli leads Michigan for Howard
Phil Martelli is all set to guide Michigan for the rest of the college basketball regular season. The 67-year-old Martelli will fill in while Wolverines head coach Juwan Howard serves a five-game suspension. Howard was penalized after hitting a Wisconsin assistant coach in the head during a postgame handshake line Sunday. Martelli has spent nearly four decades as a coach in big-time college hoops, and led Saint Joseph’s within one win of the Final Four in 2004. This is his third season as Michigan’s associate head coach. His first game will be Wednesday night when the Wolverines host Rutgers. Michigan is 14-11 this season. Howard is expected to return for the Big Ten Tournament, which begins March 9 in Indianapolis.

Soccer – US women’s team players see settlement as turning point
U.S. women soccer players have reached a landmark agreement with the sport’s American governing body to end a six-year legal battle over equal pay. The deal promises them $24 million plus bonuses that match those of the men. The U.S. Soccer Federation and the women have announced a deal in which the players will split $22 million, about one-third of what they had sought in damages. The federation also agrees to establish a fund with $2 million to benefit the players in their post-soccer careers and charitable efforts aimed at growing the sport for women.

NFL – Rodgers says he still hasn’t decided on his 2022 plans
Aaron Rodgers says he’s still making up his mind about whether he wants to return to the Green Bay Packers next season. Rodgers discussed his future Tuesday while talking on “The Pat McAfee Show”. Rodgers said after the season that he would try to make a decision about his 2022 plans in relatively short order rather than dragging out the process. The reigning MVP said at the time that he hadn’t ruled out any option, including returning to the Packers for an 18th season, retiring or requesting a trade.

Golf – Fire-damaged Oakland Hills golf clubhouse to be rebuilt
The Oakland Hills Country Club’s century-old clubhouse, devastated last week by a fire, will be rebuilt and plans call for a replica of the stately white, pillared building that housed artifacts of some of golf’s biggest stars at the suburban Detroit course. Rick Palmer, president of the Oakland Hills Country Club, said Monday board members who met Saturday “unanimously made an easy decision to determine that the restored, rebuilt clubhouse will be a replica of what the iconic clubhouse was before the fire.” A fire that started Thursday morning in clubhouse’s attic space spread quickly throughout much of the 90,000-square-foot facility. The clubhouse was built in 1922.

Golf – Mickelson apologizes for Saudi comments, deal with KPMG ends
Phil Mickelson is apologizing for comments he made about the Saudis and the financing of a rival league. Mickelson claims the comments golf writer Alan Shipnuck posted were off the record. Shipnuck wrote that was never the case. Mickelson says he regrets what he said and that his comments were reckless. Meanwhile, KPMG announced that the company and Mickelson have agreed to part ways. Their sponsorship has been around since 2008. Mickelson says he has been under pressure and stress for the last 10 years and says he needs time away. But he didn’t say when or for how long.

MLB – Another day runs off clock in MLB talks to save opening day
Another day ran off the clock in talks to salvage opening day when locked-out baseball players proposed what they considered a small move forward in drawn-out labor negotiations and management termed it a third straight step backward. Management again proposed a federal mediator enter the negotiations, but the union immediately turned down that idea, leaving Major League Baseball on track to lose regular-season games to a labor dispute for the first time since 1995. Less than a week remains until the sides reach what management says is a Monday deadline for a deal that would allow the season to start as scheduled on March 31.

Olympics – Spanish figure skater Barquero fails Olympic drug test
Spanish figure skater Laura Barquero has become the fourth athlete to fail a doping test at the Beijing Olympics after testing positive for the banned steroid clostebol. Barquero and her partner Marco Zandron finished 11th in the pairs competition on Saturday. The International Testing Agency says her positive sample was given after the short program on Friday and the case will be heard by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. There were positive tests in Beijing for an Iranian athlete and two Ukrainians. Russian skater Kamila Valieva tested positive in a sample taken before the Olympics.

Olympics – Olympics say goodbye to Asia after a star-crossed run
The Olympics have said goodbye to Asia after a star-crossed run, and it’s unclear when they’ll be back after the continent hosted four of the last eight Games. The earliest the Summer Games could return is 2036, and the favorite could be the world’s most populous country — not China, as you might expect, but India. India’s population is expected to overtake China’s 1.4 billion in the next decade, and it’s lobbying for the western city of Ahmedabad to be the host city for 2036, with events elsewhere, including New Delhi. In a show of support, the International Olympic Committee has scheduled the annual meeting of its full membership for next year in the western Indian metropolis of Mumbai.
