White Sox 8, Guardians 2 – White Sox pound 5 homers, rock Central-leading Guardians 8-2
Elvis Andrus hit one of Chicago’s five home runs off rookie Hunter Gaddis and the White Sox cut into Cleveland’s lead in the AL Central with an 8-2 win. Andrus connected in the fifth inning off Gaddis, who became the first Cleveland pitcher to allow five homers in a game since Luis Tiant in 1969. On Wednesday, Andrus raised some eyebrows by saying he expected the first-place Guardians “to crumble the closer we get.” Chicago trimmed Cleveland’s lead to three. Gavin Sheets started Chicago’s homer barrage with a two-run shot in the second. The Guardians had their winning streak stopped at six.

Kansas City fell behind 10-0 in the first quarter and spent most of the game playing catch-up. Justin Herbert finished with 334 yards passing and three touchdowns for the Chargers. NCAAFB – Sputtering offense could put Notre Dame’s goals in peril
Notre Dame’s 0-2 start and subsequent fall out of the AP Top 25 has created anger within the program. The Fighting Irish are hoping their new quarterback can help them dig out of this early-season hole. Drew Pyne is expected to replace the injured Tyler Buchner on Saturday against California. But what would help Notre Dame most is if Pyne can provide a jump-start to a sputtering offense that has put the team’s biggest goals in peril.

NCAAFB – J.J. McCarthy will get the start again for Michigan
No. 4 Michigan hosts Connecticut on Saturday, when the J.J. McCarthy era will officially begin. Coach Jim Harbaugh named the sophomore the starter, making Big Ten championship-winning quarterback Cade McNamara a backup. The situation reminds Harbaugh of what he went through with the San Francisco 49ers. A year after Alex Smith led San Francisco to the NFC championship game, he was replaced by Colin Kaepernick. The Huskies will start freshman quarterback Zion Turner at Michigan Stadium.

Tennis – Federer, Serena retire; tennis moves on to Alcaraz, Swiatek
The timing of it all hardly could be more symbolic: All within a span of two weeks, Serena Williams plays what is believed to be her last match at age 40, Roger Federer announces he’ll be retiring at 41, Iga Swiatek wins her third Grand Slam title at 21, and Carlos Alcaraz gets his first at 19. After so much handwringing in recent years about what would become of tennis once transcendent superstars such as Williams and Federer leave the game, the sport does seem to be in good hands as it prepares to move on. Federer said Thursday he will exit after the Laver Cup next week. Williams lost in the third round of the U.S. Open on Sept. 2.

Thomas had 16 points, 15 rebounds and 11 assists for the Sun, who have now won all four of their elimination games in these playoffs, topping Dallas on the road in the first round and beating Chicago in Games 4 and 5 to close out that series. Game 4 of this best-of-five series is Sunday in Connecticut. Jackie Young scored 22 points and A’ja Wilson added 19 for the Aces.

WNBA – Griner, Whelan families to meet Biden amid US-Russia talks
President Joe Biden plans to meet at the White House on Friday with the families of WNBA star Brittney Griner and Michigan corporate security executive Paul Whelan, both of whom remain jailed in Russia. The meetings are to be the first in-person encounter between Biden and the families and come amid sustained but so far unsuccessful efforts by the administration to secure the two Americans’ release. The administration said in July that it had made a “substantial proposal” to get them home, but Russia has not yet settled on a deal with the U.S.

NHL – NHL, players remain committed to hosting Feb. 2024 World Cup
The NHL and players remain committed to hosting a World Cup of Hockey in February 2024 even as they work through some unexpected logistical challenges. Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, the Players’ Association’s Mathieu Schneider and staffs are working daily to attempt to overcome hurdles related to staging part of the tournament in Europe. The plan is to have eight teams involved in the first international tournament featuring the top players in the world since the World Cup in 2016. The league has not participated in the past two Olympics. A decision has not yet been made about what to do about Russia amid the country’s war in Ukraine.

Judge asked to approve fund for U-Michigan doc’s victims
Attorneys are asking a judge to approve creation of a settlement fund for sexual-assault victims of a University of Michigan sports doctor, a key step in a $490 million deal with more than 1,000 people. The settlement between the school and victims of the late Dr. Robert Anderson was announced in January, but there’s been no public activity. A request was filed this week under seal in Detroit federal court. It seeks the establishment of a “survivors settlement fund” and the appointment of someone to oversee the fund. Attorney Richard Schulte says he can’t comment on the filing. But he says “more concrete news” will come soon. Anderson died in 2008 after working at the university for nearly 40 years.

Olympics – IOC committee visits sites for 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles
The International Olympic Committee’s coordination commission made its first in-person visit to Los Angeles to inspect proposed venues for the 2028 Games. The group met with local organizing officials over three days. LA28 organizing committee Chairman Casey Wasserman says the city is “well-positioned for an exceptional event.” The Los Angeles Games will host 10,000 athletes, while another 5,000 will compete in the Paralympics.
