Notre Dame is promoting tight ends coach Gerard Parker to offensive coordinator and working to hire Wisconsin assistant Gino Guidugli as quarterbacks coach for the Fighting Irish, according to two people with knowledge of the decisions. The people spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because deals were still being finalized and needed university approval. Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman was forced to retool his offensive staff following the departure this month of offensive coordinator Tommy Rees to Alabama, where he will hold the same position.

NCAA – NCAA asks US appeals court to block pay for student-athletes
The NCAA is asking a federal appeals court to reject a legal effort to make colleges pay Division I athletes an hourly wage. Lawyers for the students say that weekly, they spend 30 hours or more on their sport, and often need money for expenses even if they are on scholarship. The NCAA says the idea would cause chaos, and leave student-athletes with a tax bill for their scholarships. Critics also fear it could lead schools to cut sports that don’t generate revenue, while sending more resources to profitable football and basketball programs. The three-judge panel in Philadelphia did not say when it would rule.

NFL – Bears buy property for potential Arlington Heights stadium
The Chicago Bears have bought the property that they’ve been sizing up for a new enclosed stadium in suburban Arlington Heights. The Bears announced Wednesday afternoon that they bought the 326-acre property for $197.2 million. The Bears cautioned that the purchase doesn’t mean their plans for a new stadium and an entertainment district will come to fruition. The Bears currently play at Soldier Field in downtown Chicago. Economic analysts have said creating a Bears entertainment district would create more than 48,000 jobs and generate $9.4 billion for the local economy.

MLB – Clevinger reports as MLB probes domestic violence charges
Mike Clevinger has reported to the Chicago White Sox for spring training, joining his new team amid an ongoing investigation by Major League Baseball into allegations of domestic violence. White Sox general manager Rick Hahn tells reporters the team’s “only option” is to allow Clevinger to report while awaiting results of MLB’s investigation into the accusations. The 32-year-old pitcher finalized a $12 million, one-year contract with the White Sox on Dec. 4. MLB’s investigation predates Clevinger’s contract with his new team. Clevinger told reporters he is confident he will be exonerated.

One of 12 boys rescued from Thai cave dies at British school
One of the 12 boys rescued from a flooded cave in Thailand in 2018 after being trapped for more than two weeks has died in England, where he was attending a sports academy. The foundation sponsoring his studies says 17-year-old Duangphet Phromthep was found unconscious in his room at the Brooke House College Football Academy and died later at a hospital. The cause of death was not immediately known. The boy was the captain of the Wild Boars, a youth soccer team in northern Thailand. Twelve members of the team and their coach were exploring a cave complex in 2018 when they were trapped by rapidly rising floodwaters. A massive search and rescue operation was launched, involving international divers.

MHSAA – Bartz retires as Edwardsburg head football coach
Edwardsburg high school football coach Kevin Bartz announced he will be retiring at the end of this school year.  Bartz told Leader Publications that he’s not sure if he would also be retiring as a teacher at the school.   Bartz is the third most successful head coach in Southwest Michigan, only behind Denny Dock (Hartford, Dowagiac, Lakeshore) and Decatur’s Joe Groh.  Bartz led the Eddies to the Division 4 state championship in 2018.  He steps down with a record of 216-78 in his 28 seasons at Edwardsburg’s head coach.  Edwardsburg has won the Wolverine Conference Championship 10 consecutive years and has not had a losing season since 2009.   Edwardsburg is scheduled to open up the 2023 season at home against defending Division 6 State Champions Grand Rapids West Catholic on August 25.
