NCAAFB – With mix of blue-chips and 3-stars, Michigan develops top D
Michigan brings the third-ranked defense in the country into the its College Football Playoff semifinal against No. 3 TCU at the Fiesta Bowl. The unit is a mix of developmental success stories such as defensive end Mike Morris and defensive back Mike Sainristil and blue-chip recruits such as Mazi Smith and Will Johnson. Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter says the defense is a testament to coach Jim Harbaugh’s player development model. TCU offensive coordinator Garret Riley says beyond Michigan’s talent, the discipline of the Wolverines is the biggest challenge.

NCAAFB – Michigan’s Smith says he delayed applying for weapon permit
Michigan defensive tackle Mazi Smith is talking publicly for the first time since he was charged with felony gun possession during an October traffic stop. Smith says he was in the process of applying for a concealed-weapon permit. He says he had already taken the required eight-hour class and was several days away from turning in the necessary paperwork. He later pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor. He has continued to play for the Wolverines, who face TCU in a College Football Playoff semifinal this weekend at the Fiesta Bowl.

NCAAFB – Freeman debut had ups, downs for Notre Dame as bowl arrives
Coach Marcus Freeman will lead No. 19 Notre Dame against No. 20 South Carolina in the Gator Bowl on Friday. A year ago, he was the new coach for the Fighting Irish. He tried to balance recruiting and preparations for a Fiest Bowl game against Oklahoma State. Notre Dame ended up blowing a big lead. Freeman says he has learned from the mistakes he made last December and throughout the 2022 season as he attempts to live up to expectations in South Bend.
