Bruins 5, Red Wings 1 – Marchand has 2 goals and an assist in return, Bruins roll

Jeremy Swayman made 27 saves, David Pastrnak had a goal and two assists and Charlie Coyle and Craig Smith also scored to help Boston improve to 6-0 at home this season. Marchand returned after undergoing arthroscopic surgery in May to repair the cartilage in his hips. The 34-year-old forward was expected to be off the ice for six months. Instead, he was proclaimed good to return by Bruins coach Jim Montgomery following the morning skate. Adam Erne scored for Detroit.

Oilers 6, Blackhawks 5 – Draisaitl’s late goal lifts Oilers over Blackhawks 6-5
Leon Draisaitl scored the tiebreaking goal with 37.6 seconds left and had two assists to lead the Edmonton Oilers past the Chicago Blackhawks 6-5 for their third straight win. Connor McDavid scored three goals and added an assist in his 12th career hat trick and second this season. Draisaitl scored from the right side of the net with goalie Alex Stalock down to settle a wild, penalty-filled contest and snap Chicago’s four-game winning streak.

NCAAFB – No. 4 Michigan motivated to stop 2-game skid vs Michigan State
No. 4 Michigan is expected to rout rival Michigan State to stay undefeated and on pace to chase Big Ten and national championship goals. The Wolverines know better than to underestimate the Spartans. Mel Tucker is the first Michigan State coach to win his first two games against Michigan in the 114-game series, continuing a stretch of success that includes 10 wins in 14 games against the maize and blue. Jim Harbaugh is 3-4 in the rivalry as a coach. He says there’s no question recent results help get his players’ attention despite the Spartans’ struggles this season.

NCAAFB – No. 16 Syracuse hosts Notre Dame; important game for both
No. 16 Syracuse hosts Notre Dame on Saturday a week after the Orange suffered their first loss of the season, a six-point setback at No. 5 Clemson. The Orange will try to get back on track against the Irish, who have won four of five after starting the season with two losses. Syracuse is unbeaten in five games at home, while the Irish have a road victory over North Carolina, now ranked No. 21.

FIFA – 2023 CONCACAF final set for SoFi Stadium in California
The 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup final will be played at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, one of the sites of the 2026 World Cup. The confederation for North and Central America and the Caribbean will hold a draw for the tournament on April 14. Quarterfinals will be played July 8-9, and semifinals on July 12.

Olympics – 2030 Winter Games – Vancouver’s shot at hosting 2030 Winter Olympics dims
British Columbia’s government says it will not support Vancouver’s bid to hold the 2030 Olympics in the province. The move places Salt Lake City closer to bringing the Games back to Utah. BC’s minister of tourism, arts, culture and sports says the cost of staging an Olympics was the main reason the government could not support the effort. Canada’s Olympic committee is planning a Friday news conference. If Vancouver bows out, it would leave Salt Lake City and Sapporo, Japan, as the two remaining candidates. Salt Lake City hosted the Olympics in 2002 and has said some of the infrastructure from those games still in play.  Vancouver hosted the 2010 winter games.

MHSAA – MHSAA Shuts down Bridgman exhibition game
Bridgman was informed Thursday by the Michigan High School Athletic Association that their planned “exhibition game” against Grand Rapids Northpointe Christian could not be played.   Bridgman and Northpointe each are above the 215 student limit for teams to qualify for the 8-man playoffs.  The two schools were both 9-0 this season and planned on facing each other Friday night in Bridgman.  In a note to parents by Bridgman, The MHSAA said “that our game violated MHSAA bylaws. As a member district, the consequences of this event could lead to removal from the organization, thus potentially jeopardizing all of our student-athletes.”   Bridgman will instead host a community tailgate and recognize their senior players, cheerleaders and marching band members and an intrasquad scrimmage.  Bridgman has 14 players on their football team, out of 278 students at the school. Northpointe Christian has a total enrollment of 320.
