Michigan 89, St. John’s 73 – Michigan routs St. John’s and new coach Pitino 89-73 behind McDaniel and Burnett
Dug McDaniel had 26 points, Nimari Burnett scored 21 — all in the first half — and Michigan cruised to an 89-73 romp over St. John’s and new coach Rick Pitino at Madison Square Garden. Terrance Williams II added 12 points and Will Tschetter scored 10 for the Wolverines in the opener of the annual Gavitt Tipoff Games, which matches Big Ten teams against Big East programs. Michigan interim coach Phil Martelli filled in again for Juwan Howard, who has been recovering from heart surgery since mid-September. McDaniel added seven assists and six rebounds. Burnett made all eight field goal attempts in the first half, including four 3-pointers. Both players set a career scoring high. Michigan has won its last 11 games at Madison Square Garden.

Jamir Watkins scored 19 points and Florida State had six players score in double figures as the Seminoles rolled to a 94-67 win over Central Michigan in the opening-round campus game of the Sunshine Slam tournament. In the first meeting between the schools on the hardwood, Florida State took a 13-1 lead and the Chippewas never got within single digits.  Anthony Pritchard had 16 points, grabbed nine rebounds and dished five assists to lead Central Michigan. NFL – National Football League – Week 10
Last Night
Denver Broncos 24, Buffalo Bills 22

Broncos 24, Bills 22 – Lutz is good on second chance with 36-yard field goal in Broncos’ 24-22 win over Bills
Wil Lutz got a do-over and kicked a 36-yard field goal as time expired, and the Denver Broncos won their third straight by rallying for a 24-22 victory over the sloppy, turnover-prone Buffalo Bills. Lutz got a second chance after he missed wide right with four seconds remaining from 41 yards, but the play was negated when Buffalo was flagged for having 12 players on the field. The Broncos improved to 4-5 and have won three straight and four of six since a 70-20 loss at Miami. The Bills dropped to 5-5 following an outing in which they turned the ball over four times, with quarterback Josh Allen throwing two interceptions and losing a fumble.

NFL – Lions coach Dan Campbell focuses on strong offensive instead of struggling defense
Coach Dan Campbell knows his defense has to start making plays if the Detroit Lions are going to be a threat to win their first playoff game since the 1990s.  On Monday, though, he was focused on Detroit’s success on the other side of the ball. The Lions offense didn’t slow down after the bye, putting up 533 yards in a 41-38 road win over the Los Angeles Chargers.  In their past two games, including a 26-14 victory on Oct. 30, Detroit has put up 1,019 yards, including 422 on the ground.  Campbell focused his praise on his offensive line. In the games against the Raiders and Chargers, they’ve allowed one sack while opening holes for Jahmyr Gibbs and, in Los Angeles, the returning David Montgomery.  Montgomery’s return allowed Campbell and offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to diversify the offense. He gives them a power back averaging 4.7 yards per carry, while Gibbs provides outside speed and a significant receiving threat.

NFL – Rodgers tells NBC he targets a mid-December return from torn Achilles tendon
New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers says his goal is to return from a torn Achilles tendon by mid-December. That’s according to NBC’s Melissa Stark, who spoke to Rodgers and reported his comments during the telecast of the Jets’ game at Las Vegas. Rodgers had hinted recently he hopes to return before the end of the season, but this is the most specific he has been. He suffered what was thought to be a season-ending injury in the opener against the Buffalo Bills.

Milwaukee’s Damian Lillard returned to action after missing two games with a calf injury and scored 12 points while shooting 3 of 17. The Bucks lost both games that Lillard missed. NCAAFB – Sherrone Moore will lead Michigan if a judge doesn’t rule in school’s favor
Jim Harbaugh stood behind a lectern and delivered prepared remarks Monday to kick off a week in which he will either lose another opportunity to coach No. 2 Michigan or win a hearing to at least temporarily lift the Big Ten’s penalty against him for a sign-stealing scheme. Harbaugh shared his take on various topics but said he would save his opinions on the conference’s punishment for his day in court, which comes Friday. Sherrone Moore will fill in for Harbaugh if he’s still suspended for Saturday’s game at Maryland.

MLB – For Craig Counsell, the chance to manage the Cubs was one he couldn’t pass up
Craig Counsell was ready for a new challenge and couldn’t pass up the opportunity to manage the Chicago Cubs. The Cubs hired the 53-year-old Counsell away from Milwaukee last week, landing the former big leaguer with a record contract and firing David Ross in a pair of surprising moves. He became the majors’ highest paid manager with a five-year contract worth more than $40 million. Counsell says he “thought that a new challenge was where I had to push myself.” Counsell led the budget-conscious Brewers to five playoff appearances in the past six years, including three NL Central titles.

WNBA – Kahleah Copper of WNBA’s Chicago Sky returns to Rutgers as assistant coach
Kahleah Copper is heading back to Rutgers as an assistant on the women’s basketball team. The Chicago Sky’s star wing will be the Director of Athletic Culture and Professional Development. Copper played for the Scarlet Knights from 2012-16 under coach C. Vivian Stringer. This isn’t Copper’s first foray into coaching. She was an assistant on the Purdue University Northwest basketball team in 2020-21. She said the experience helped her gain a greater appreciation for coaching. Rutgers coach Coquese Washington called Copper this summer to see if she was interested in the job.
