Last Night

Baltimore Ravens 16, Chicago Bears 13
Indianapolis Colts 41, Buffalo Bills 15

Browns 13, Lions 10 – Chubb runs for 130, Browns hold off winless Lions 13-10
Nick Chubb caught a touchdown pass and ran for 130 yards as the Cleveland Browns held on to avoid a season-wrecking upset and keep Detroit winless with a sloppy 13-10 victory over the Lions. Chubb returned to Cleveland’s lineup after a one-game absence due to COVID-19. The star running back caught a 5-yard TD pass from Baker Mayfield and then helped the Browns run out the clock. With Cleveland’s crowd chanting his name before every snap Chubb gained 36 yards on the final drive as the Browns chewed up the last 2:29. D’Andre Swift had 136 yards and 57-yard TD for the Lions, who fell to 0-9-1.

Ravens 16, Bears 13 – Freeman TD lifts Ravens over Bears with Jackson sidelined
Devonta Freeman scored on a 3-yard run with 22 seconds remaining and the AFC North-leading Baltimore Ravens beat the Chicago Bears 16-13 even though star quarterback Lamar Jackson missed the game because of an illness. The Ravens (7-3) ruled out Jackson 90 minutes before kickoff after he took some throws on the field. The 2019 MVP was a full participant in practice Friday after being held out the previous two days. Coach John Harbaugh said Wednesday the illness was not COVID-19. Justin Tucker kicked three field goals. Chicago’s Andy Dalton threw for two touchdowns after Justin Fields left the game with a rib injury in the third quarter. But the Bears lost their fifth straight.

Colts 41, Bills 15 – Bottom falls out for Bills in bumbling 41-15 loss to Colts
It wasn’t one thing that went wrong for the Buffalo Bills in a 41-15 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. It was everything. Buffalo turned the ball over four times, allowed Jonathan Taylor to score a franchise-record five times, in dropping to 6-4 and out of the AFC East Division lead. The Bills have lost three of five and face a short week in preparing to play at New Orleans on Thursday night.

NCAAFB – High stakes as Michigan and Ohio State meet again
The stakes are high for this year’s version of The Game. The annual clash between Ohio State and Michigan is already fueled by a century of hatred and fanaticism. A lot more than bragging rights are on the line this year in Ann Arbor for the No. 2 Buckeyes and No. 6 Wolverines. The winner clinches the Big Ten East and advances to the conference championship game Dec. 4 — and stays alive for the College Football Playoff. The loser picks up a second loss and will consider the season ruined.

NCAAFB – Florida fires coach Dan Mullen
Florida has fired coach Dan Mullen a day after his sixth loss in nine games. The move comes two months after the Gators went toe to toe with defending national champion Alabama and a year after they had a chance to make the College Football Playoff.  Mullen’s Downfall ends a tumultuous two seasons that included mounting losses, numerous public relation missteps, NCAA sanctions and a debacle against lower-division Samford. His final game was a 24-23 loss in overtime at Missouri.  The Gators will pay Mullen a $12 million buyout.

Golf – Tiger Woods posts short video of him swinging a wedge
One swing. Two words. A three-second video. That’s all it took on Sunday from Tiger Woods to get everyone talking about his future in golf. Woods had significant injuries to his right leg and ankle from a February car crash in February. Sunday was the first time he has updated his health status since a Golf Digest interview in May when he said the recovery was as painful as anything he has endured. His three-second video on Twitter was accompanied by the words, “Making progress.” What that means is anyone’s guess. Woods hasn’t played since last December.

Golf – PGA – Gooch sails to victory at Sea Island for 1st PGA Tour title
Talor Gooch has picked up his first PGA Tour title, and he played like he had done this before.  Gooch played bogey-free at Sea Island in the final round. He led by as many as five shots on the back nine. He wound up with a 64 and a three-shot victory in the RSM Classic.  Gooch is the seventh player in the 12-year history of the tournament to make the RSM Classic his first PGA Tour title. It sends the former Oklahoma State player to the Masters in April. He’s also No. 33 in the world and leading the FedEx Cup.

Golf – LPGA – Jin Young Ko delivers big finish to win LPGA player of year
Jin Young Ko delivered her best performance against her toughest opponent. The South Korean star shot a 63 on Sunday to win the CME Group Tour Championship. That’s what she needed to overtake Nelly Korda for LPGA Tour player of the year.  Ko was in a four-way tie for the lead at the start. She shot 30 on the front nine and kept her distance the rest of the way. Nasa Hataoka of Japan birdied the last two holes for a 64 to finish one shot behind.  Ko won $1.5 million. That’s the richest prize in women’s golf.

Tennis – Olympic officials: Chinese tennis star Peng says she is safe
The International Olympic Committee says missing Chinese tennis star Peng Shuai has told Olympic officials in a video call from Beijing that she is safe and well.  The 30-minute call Sunday came amid growing global alarm over Peng after she accused a former leading Communist Party official of sexual assault.  China’s ruling Communist Party has tried to quell fears abroad while suppressing information in China about Peng. Peng reappeared in public at a youth tournament in Beijing, according to photos released Sunday by the organizer. The posting by China Open management on the Weibo social media service made no mention of Peng’s disappearance or accusation she was sexually assaulted by a former top Chinese official.
