NFL – National Football League – Week 7
Yesterday
Detroit Lions 23, Atlanta Falcons 22

Lions 23, Falcons 22 – Lions stun Falcons 23-22 after letting Atlanta score late TD
Matthew Stafford connected with T.J. Hockenson on an 11-yard touchdown pass as time expired and Matt Prater booted a 48-yard extra point to give the Detroit Lions a stunning 23-22 victory over Atlanta. The Falcons wound with another improbable loss because they scored a touchdown. Needing to get the ball back, the Lions made no attempt to tackle Todd Gurley on a 10-yard TD run. Gurley tried to fall down but landed on the goal line. That gave Detroit one more chance, and Stafford made it count on the final play. Prater hit the PAT after an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

NFL – Morris has share of Falcons’ mistakes in yet another loss
A long list of mistakes and missed opportunities contributed to the Atlanta Falcons’ 23-22 loss to the Detroit Lions. The biggest miscue was running back Todd Gurley scoring a touchdown when the Falcons were trying to run out the clock to set up a game-winning field goal. But interim coach Raheem Morris was responsible for some other blunders. Morris second-guessed himself for a decision to leave his offense on the field on a fourth-and-5 play at the Lions 13 early in the fourth quarter. Instead of kicking a short field goal, the Falcons’ incomplete pass proved costly.

MLB – MLB Postseason – World Series (Best of 7)
Last Night
2020 World Series – Globe Life Park, Arlington, Texas
Los Angeles Dodgers 4, Tampa Bay Rays 2                                             (LAD leads 3-2)

Dodgers 4, Rays 2 – Dodgers take 3-2 lead
The Los Angeles Dodgers are one victory away from their first World Series title in 32 years.  Joc Pederson and Max Muncy hit solo homers as the Dodgers beat the Tampa Bay Rays, 4-2 to take a three-games-to-two lead in the World Series. It was Muncy’s third homer and 12th RBI with two out in this postseason.  It took L.A. just two batters in taking the lead. Mookie Betts led off the top of the first with a double and scored on Corey Seager’s single. Clay Bellinger’s RBI single made it 2-0 later in the inning.  Winning pitcher Clayton Kershaw worked 5 2/3 innings for the Dodgers, allowing two runs and five hits. Kershaw was helped out when Manuel Margot was thrown out attempting to steal home in the fifth inning.  The three-time Cy Young Award winner has two of L.A’s three wins in the series.  Randy Arozarena delivered an RBI single that got Tampa Bay within 3-2 in the third inning. It was his 27th hit of this postseason, breaking the old mark set by Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval in 2014.  Rays starter and loser Tyler Glasnow was reached for four runs over five innings. The Dodgers can wrap up the series on Tuesday.

NASCAR – Misty, drizzling day postpones Cup race in Texas on Lap 52
Weather has postponed NASCAR’s Cup race in Texas after 52 laps as a misty day progressively worsened without actual rainfall. The race was pushed to Monday after a delay of just over four hours. The cars ran for another eight laps after a weather caution. Clint Bowyer is leading, followed by Jimmie Johnson in the last Texas race as full-time drivers for both veterans. Martin Truex Jr. was moved to the back of the field because of an illegal spoiler. Truex had maneuvered all the way up to fifth when the race was stopped.

NCAA Basketball – NCAA accuses Wildcats of major violations
Arizona has been accused of nine counts of misconduct, including five Level I violations, in a Notice of Allegations sent by the NCAA last week. That’s according to a person familiar with the situation. The violations include a lack of institutional control and failure to monitor by the university, and lack of head coach control by basketball coach Sean Miller. Arizona had been in the NCAA’s crosshairs since 2017, when assistant coach Emanuel Richardson was among 10 people arrested as part of a federal corruption investigation into college basketball.

NCAA Football – Hoosiers crack poll
Indiana jumped into The Associated Press college football poll Sunday after pulling off the weekend’s most dramatic upset. Indiana is No. 17 after beating No. 8 Penn State in overtime, the Hoosiers’ first victory against a team ranked in the AP top 10 since 1987. It’s Indiana’s highest ranking since 1993. Penn State slipped 10 spots to No. 18 after losing to the Hoosiers for just the second time in 24 meetings since joining the Big Ten. Clemson remains a rock-solid No. 1 and Alabama is second. The Tigers received 52 first-place votes and the Crimson Tide got the remaining 10. Ohio State, Notre Dame and Georgia round out the top 5 and are followed by Oklahoma State, Cincinnati, Texas A&M, Wisconsin and Florida.

NCAA Football – Badgers QB tests positive
Wisconsin says nobody who played in the season opener Friday night tested positive for COVID-19 or reported having any symptoms beforehand, amid weekend reports that quarterback Graham Mertz has tested positive. The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel and Wisconsin State Journal reported that Mertz would be taking a second test to determine whether his first test was a false positive. The Journal-Sentinel reported that Mertz’s positive test came one day after the Badgers’ 45-7 victory over Illinois. A second positive test would require Mertz to miss at least three weeks according to Big Ten protocols.

Golf – PGA – Cantlay gets 3rd career win
Patrick Cantlay rallied from four shots behind to win the Zozo Championship at Sherwood. Cantlay closed with a 7-under 65 for a one-shot victory, the third of his career, and first in his home state of California. All three required making up a deficit of three shots or more.
Justin Thomas and Jon Rahm finished one shot back. Rahm took the lead with a birdie on the par-5 11th, only to drop shots on each of the next two holes. Thomas started the round with a one-shot lead but fell back by hitting into hazards on consecutive holes down the stretch.

Golf – LPGA – McDonald gets first LPGA win
Ally McDonald gave herself a big birthday present by winning the LPGA Drive On Championship for her first tour title.  The 28-year-old from Mississippi held off Danielle Kang by a stroke on the Great Waters Course, closing with a 3-under 69 for a 16-under 272 total. Kang birdied the par-5 18th for a 68.
