Tigers 6, Orioles 2 – Haase, Tigers shake off rough start in 6-2 win over Orioles
Eric Haase hit a two-run double in a three-run first inning and the Detroit Tigers went on to a 6-2 victory over the Baltimore Orioles. Detroit earned a split of the four-game series, improving to 30-24 at home this season. The Tigers tied a major league record with 59 home losses in 2019, baseball’s most recent full season. Detroit’s Tyler Alexander fell behind 2-0 after four batters, but didn’t allow another run in four innings of work. Erasmo Ramirez pitched two scoreless innings to pick up his first major league win since Sept. 3, 2018, when he beat the Orioles as a member of the Seattle Mariners.

White Sox 2, Indians 1 – Goodwin homer in 9th gives White Sox 2-1 win over Indians
Brian Goodwin homered with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Chicago White Sox a 2-1 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Sunday. Goodwin hit a 3-1 pitch from Nick Wittgren over the wall in right for his sixth home run of the season. Liam Hendriks allowed just one hit in the ninth to complete a scoreless six-inning stint by the Chicago bullpen. Reynaldo Lopez allowed one hit in three innings followed by Aaron Bummer and Craig Kimbrel, who each worked a hitless inning. Chicago won two of three in the series to extend its AL Central lead to nine games. Myles Straw homered for the Indians.

Nationals 6, Cubs 5 – Hernandez’s HR in 9th gives Nats 6-5 win over Cubs
Yadiel Hernandez’s solo shot in the ninth inning — his second homer of the day — gave the Washington Nationals a 6-5 victory over the Chicago Cubs. Hernandez’s four-hit day helped the Nationals overcome three home runs by Rafael Ortega of the Cubs. Washington took two of three in this series against Chicago following trade deadline selloffs that scattered many of the players who helped both teams win the World Series recently. Ortega tied a franchise record for homers in a game, leading off with a shot to right-center before adding two-run blasts in the sixth and eighth.

Tokyo 2020 – Summer Olympic Games – Games of the XXXII Olympiad

Track – Texas-born Italian sprints from unknown to Bolt’s successor
Marcell Jacobs won the men’s Olympic 100-meter race Sunday night, crossing the line in 9.8 seconds to bring the sprint gold to Italy for the first time. Jacobs topped America’s Fred Kerley and Canada’s Andre DeGrasse to take the spot held for the past 13 years by the now-retired Usain Bolt. Jacobs’ victory came only moments after his countryman, Gianmarco Tamberi, tied Qatari high jumper Mutaz Barshim for gold in the high jump. Yulimar Rojas of Venezuela broke a 26-year-old world record in the triple jump with a leap of 51 feet, 5 inches (15.67 meters).

Track – Camacho-Quinn keeps Harrison, US out of win column
Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico powered ahead of American Keni Harrison in the women’s 100-meter hurdles Monday, springing an upset and keeping the United States out of the win column at the Olympic track meet for yet another session. Camacho-Quinn finished in 12.37 seconds for a .15 second win — a blowout in such a short race — over the world-record holder, Harrison. Jamaica’s Megan Tapper finished third. Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory that competes under its own flag at the Olympics, has one more track gold medal than the deepest team at the Games as the meet approaches its halfway point.

Volleyball – U.S. men’s volleyball eliminated early at Olympics
The U.S. men’s volleyball team was eliminated after pool play at the Olympics for the first time since 2000 after losing in three sets to Argentina. The Americans won two of their first three matches in Tokyo before losing to Brazil and Argentina to fall to fifth place in Pool B and miss out on the quarterfinals for the first time since losing all five matches in Sydney 21 years ago. The U.S. won bronze five years ago in Rio de Janeiro and brought back eight players from that team and high hopes for these Olympics.

Beach Volleyball – Ross, Klineman advance to face reigning beach queen Ludwig
April Ross and Alix Klineman put away a Cuban team they had never played before. Next up for the Americans is one of the most familiar faces in all of beach volleyball: four-time Olympian and defending gold medalist Laura Ludwig. Ross and Klineman beat Cuba in straight sets, 21-17, 21-15 in their knockout round opener to reach the quarterfinals. They will meet the German and her current partner, Maggie Kozuch. Ludwig and Kira Walkenhorst won it all in Rio de Janeiro, where Ross and Kerri Walsh Jennings took bronze.

Golf – Olympic gold puts Schauffele among golf’s elite players
No one ever doubted that Xander Schauffele had the game to be a great golfer. He just never had enough trophies. Certainly not the right ones. An Olympic gold medal should be enough to elevate him to the elite in golf. Schauffele had gone 18 months without a win. He had close calls in the majors. He had never won with a 54-hole lead. He took care of all that at Kasumigaseki Country Club with a one-shot victory. That moves him to No. 4 in the world. Schauffele hopes it can lead to even bigger trophies.

Track – Belarus runner says team forcing departure
Belarus track sprinter Krystsina Tsimanouskaya says her Olympic team officials tried to remove her from Japan in a dispute that led to a standoff Sunday evening at Haneda Airport in Tokyo. Tsimanouskaya criticized Belarus team officials on her Instagram account, saying she had been put in the 4×400 relay despite never racing the event. She is due to run in the Olympic 200-meter heats Monday, An activist group supporting her said she believed her life was in danger in Belarus. It said she would seek asylum with the Austrian embassy in Tokyo.

A pandemic Olympics, without all the crowds: What gets lost?
At their halfway point, the Tokyo Olympics are still grappling with the fact that there are no crowds. But looking at the Games without fans is an opportunity to examine what spectators add to a public entertainment event, and what their absence takes away. Olympic organizers say the essence of the Games will remain the same. But without any crowds, even the television audience, which represents so much of the money made by the Olympics, is affected. In the words of one media scholar, we like to watch things with crowds because they make it easier to pretend we’re there ourselves.

Gymnastics – After Biles exit, MyKayla Skinner earns Olympic silver medal
Mykayla Skinner won a silver medal on vault in the women’s gymnastics event final to fulfil a lifelong Olympic dream. But she wasn’t supposed to be there. She had the fourth-highest score during qualifications. But the rules allow each country a maximum of two athletes in the finals. Simone Biles and Jade Carey finished first and second to push Skinner from the competition. She was preparing to get on a plane to go home when Biles struggled at team finals last week. Skinner subbed in for her and now she’s heading home with a silver medal.

Gymnastics – Olympic champion Sunisa Lee adds bronze on uneven bars
Sunisa Lee will have her carry-on stuffed with medals when she heads back to the United States. The 18-year-old Olympic gymnastics champion from Minnesota added a bronze in the uneven bars finals. Lee earned a silver in the team competition and gold in the all-around earlier in the games. Nina Derwael of Belgium took her country’s first gymnastics gold by topping the bars final. Rebeca Andrade of Brazil earned her country’s first gold in gymnastics with a victory on vault. MyKayla Skinner took silver. Skinner was added to the field when defending Olympic champion Simone Biles opted out of the competition to focus on her mental health.

Swimming – King Caeleb: Dressel joins elite club with dazzling Olympics
Arriving in Tokyo as one of the games’ most-hyped athletes, Caeleb Dressel met the moment with one scintillating performance after another. By the time he was done, Dressel had piled up five gold medals to claim his place on swimming’s Mount Rushmore. He’s only the fifth swimmer to capture that much gold in a single Olympics. The others: Michael Phelps, Mark Spitz, Kirstin Otto and Matt Biondi.

Wrestling – USA’s Gray reaches 76 kg final after disappointment in Rio
American wrestler Adeline Gray will go for gold. She broke through with a 3-2 win over Kyrgyzstan’s Aiperi Medet Kyzy in the 76 kg semifinals. With the victory, she clinched the sixth Olympic medal for a U.S. woman and is positioned to become its second gold medalist. The five-time world champion had never won an Olympic medal during her career. She finished a disappointing seventh at the Rio Olympics in 2016 after losing in the quarterfinals while fighting through injuries.
