Maryland 73, Michigan State 55 – Maryland handles Michigan State 73-55 in bubble-team matchup
Eric Ayala scored 22 points and Maryland led throughout in picking up an important 73-55 win over Michigan State. The game matched a pair of hot bubble teams with Michigan State coming in on a three-game win steak including victories over No. 5 Illinois and No. 4 Ohio State, and Maryland arriving with four consecutive conference wins. Maryland scored the first 11 points in a run that included a trio of 3-pointers, led by 10 at halftime and then fended off a brief Spartans charge midway through the second half. Joshua Langford scored 12 points and Aaron Henry 11 for Michigan State.

NCAAMBB – Izzo’s Spartans trying for late push to improve NCAA chances
Michigan State is trying to make a late push that improves its chances of earning an NCAA Tournament bid. The Spartans helped themselves in the past week with upsets of No. 4 Ohio State and No. 5 Illinois. But they followed those with Sunday’s loss at Maryland. The Spartans haven’t missed the NCAA Tournament since 1997. That was during coach Tom Izzo’s second season. Also this week, North Carolina and Xavier helped their chances to reach the tournament with weekend wins against ranked opponents. Meanwhile, Indiana and Minnesota lost momentum toward securing a bid.

Knicks 109, Pistons 90 – Knicks above .500 after 109-90 rout of Pistons
Julius Randle scored 17 of his 25 points in the second half and the New York Knicks moved above .500 with a 109-90 victory over the Detroit Pistons. The Knicks have the fourth-best record in the Eastern Conference and have won seven of their last nine games. This is the first time the Knicks have been above .500 this far into the season since they were 54-28 at the end of 2012-13, according to SportRadar. Derrick Rose scored 14 points, less than a month after he was traded from the Pistons to the Knicks. Dennis Smith Jr., who went to Detroit in that deal, started and scored seven.

Bulls at Raptors, Postponed – Raptors’ virus issues worsen, game vs. Bulls called off
Sunday’s game between the Raptors and Bulls was postponed due to worsening COVID-19 issues with Toronto. The league said the Raptors are dealing with positive test results along with ongoing contact tracing issues. Toronto played Friday without starting forward Pascal Siakam, head coach Nick Nurse and several other assistants and staffers because of virus-related issues.

Blackhawks 7, Red Wings 2 – Kane scores 400th goal as Blackhawks beat Red Wings 7-2
Patrick Kane scored his 400th career goal, Kevin Lankinen made a career-high 44 saves and the Chicago Blackhawks closed out a successful February in style, beating the Detroit Red Wings 7-2. Kane and Alex DeBrincat got loose for a 2-on-1 midway through the third period. The 32-year-old Kane kept the puck, waited for sprawled Detroit defenseman Filip Hronek to slide by him and then beat Thomas Greiss on the stick side for his team-best 11th of the season. Kane pumped both of his arms after becoming the 100th NHL player to reach 400 goals.  Sam Gagner and Evgeny Svechnikov scored for Detroit, who were without Captain Dylan Larkin for a second straight game with an upper body injury.

(6) Louisville 78, Notre Dame 61 – No. 6 Louisville women down Irish, win ACC regular season
Dana Evans and the sixth-ranked Louisville women took care of business quickly and wrapped up their fourth straight regular-season Atlantic Coast Conference title with a 78-61 victory at mistake-prone Notre Dame. Evans, a senior point guard and the reigning ACC Player of the Year, scored 26 points and added five assists for coach Jeff Walz’s Cardinals, who had four other players in double figures. The Cardinals forced the Irish into 25 turnovers, nine in the first quarter.

Michigan at Minnesota – canceled
The University of Michigan women’s basketball team’s contest at Minnesota, scheduled for Sunday, will not be played, as mutually agreed upon by both teams due to COVID-related issues in the Minnesota program. Due to the limited time remaining in the regular season, this game has been canceled and declared a no contest.

NCAAFB – Texas Tech QB indicates he’s transferring to Michigan
Texas Tech quarterback Alan Bowman indicated on Twitter that he is transferring to Michigan. Bowman announced in January that he was entering the transfer portal as a grad transfer. Bowman threw for 1,602 yards with 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions in eight games last season. He played in 19 games for Texas Tech across three seasons. Joe Milton was Michigan’s starter at quarterback at the beginning of the 2020 season, but he eventually lost the job to redshirt freshman Cade McNamara. Milton entered the transfer portal, and Bowman would give the Wolverines an experienced option, assuming he’s able to play for them immediately.

NCAAFB – College football super seniors could change fortunes in 2021
More than 1,000 scholarship players in major college football are expected to take advantage of the NCAA’s offer of an extra year of eligibility for playing through the pandemic. All those extra, older players are expected to play a major role in next season. At Illinois, having about 15 super seniors was seen as a way to accelerate an Illini turnaround for an investment of about $500,00 in additional financial aid.

NASCAR – Byron gives NASCAR another surprise winner at Homestead
William Byron gave NASCAR its third surprise winner in three weeks, this one not quite as stunning as the first two at Daytona International Speedway. Byron controlled most of the final two stages at Homestead-Miami Speedway on Sunday and won for the second time in 111 Cup starts. His first one came at Daytona last August and landed him one of the final spots in the playoffs. No one saw that one coming. And few had this one on the radar, either. Byron entered the weekend as a 28-1 shot to win the race.
