NFL – Bears hire 49ers’ Hightower as special teams coordinator
The Chicago Bears have hired Richard Hightower as special teams coordinator under new coach Matt Eberflus. Hightower spent the past five seasons as San Francisco’s special teams coordinator and has 15 years of NFL coaching experience. He replaces Chris Tabor in Chicago, where Hightower was assistant special teams coach on John Fox’s staff in 2016. Special teams played a big role in San Francisco’s NFC championship game run this season. The 49ers blocked a punt and returned it for a tying touchdown in the fourth quarter of their divisional round game at Green Bay, and former Bear Robbie Gould kicked the winning field goal. The Bears now have all three coordinators in place, with Hightower joining offensive coordinator Luke Getsy and defensive coordinator Alan Williams.

NCAAFB – AP source: Miami hiring Michigan’s Gattis as o-coordinator
Miami is hiring Michigan offensive coordinator Josh Gattis to run new coach Mario Cristobal’s offense with the Hurricanes. A person with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press that Gattis was leaving Michigan after three seasons to join Cristobal’s staff. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because details of an agreement were still being finalized, and there was no announcement imminent from either school. He was the GM for the Boston Bruins from 2006-2015 and the Edmonton Oilers from 2015-2019. NHL – Blackhawks fire AHL trainer after alleged sexual harassment
The Chicago Blackhawks fired a longtime minor-league trainer in November after he was accused of sexual harassment. The Blackhawks say the alleged harassment by Rockford IceHogs trainer D.J. Jones occurred in 2014. The allegations were reported to the Blackhawks on Oct. 27. That was one day after the team released a report by an outside law firm that found the NHL team mishandled allegations that an assistant coach sexually assaulted a player in 2010. ESPN was the first to report on the accusations against Jones. Jones was in his 16th season with the IceHogs of the American Hockey League.

KHL – KHL to end season, go directly to playoffs after Olympics
The Kontinental Hockey League is calling off the rest of the regular season because of coronavirus concerns surrounding players at the Olympics. The move is contingent on approval from the board of directors and Russian Hockey Federation. The Russia-based league will go straight to playoffs after a weeklong break. The playoffs are set to begin on March 1. KHL President Alexei Morozov pointed out that there could be 120 KHL players competing in the Olympics. The top eight teams by points percentage in each conference make the playoffs. That means China-owned Kunlun Red Star are among those whose seasons are over.

Golf – PGA – Tom Hoge surges past Spieth at Pebble for 1st PGA Tour win
After 202 starts on the PGA Tour, Tom Hoge is finally a winner. Hoge emerged from a wild battle in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am that featured seven players who had a share of the lead during the final round. His final hurdle was a big one. He had to track down Jordan Spieth. Hoge nearly holed a fairway shot on the 16th for a tap-in birdie. Then he made a 20-foot birdie putt on the par-3 17th. That was right after Spieth made bogey on the 17th from a bunker. Hoge shot 68 to win by two over Spieth.

NASCAR – NASCAR scores win with successful race inside LA Coliseum
Joey Logano won the exhibition Busch Light Clash on Sunday on the temporary quarter-mile track built inside Memorial Coliseum. The race was made-for-TV and intended to hype NASCAR’s upcoming season. NASCAR moved the Clash to Los Angeles from Daytona, its only home since its 1979 inception. It was part of a focused effort to try new ideas and break from dated traditions. The Clash was a success even before the cars drove through the Southern California football team’s tunnel and onto the smooth, black asphalt that covered the Trojans’ field. Ice Cube performed at halftime and Pitbull played before the race.
