E.J. Liddell had 20 points and eight rebounds to lead No. 13 Ohio State past Michigan State 79-62. Justice Suing added 17 points and seven rebounds for the Buckeyes, who have won three in a row and six of seven. Michigan State had hoped to rebound from an embarrassing 30-point loss to Rutgers on Thursday that followed a long COVID-19 layoff. Joshua Langford led the Spartans with 14 points.

NFL – Lions trade Matt Stafford to Los Angeles Rams
The Detroit Lions are trading quarterback Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for quarterback Jared Goff, two future first-round draft picks and a third-round pick, a person with knowledge of the deal tells The Associated Press. The person spoke on condition of anonymity Saturday night because the deal has not been completed. The blockbuster trade of two starting quarterbacks and former No. 1 overall draft picks will provide a change of scenery for two players who probably could use it. Stafford asked to be traded shortly after last season ended with the Lions’ third straight season of double-digit losses.

Panthers 3, Red Wings 2 – Surging Panthers hold off reeling Red Wings 3-2
Patric Hornqvist, Aaron Ekblad and Carter Verhaeghe (vur-HAY’-gee) scored and the Florida Panthers held off the Detroit Red Wings for a 3-2 win. Anthony Mantha scored with 1:48 remaining to pull the Red Wings within a goal after pulling goalie Thomas Greiss to add an extra skater. Detroit pulled its goaltender again, but couldn’t get another shot past Chris Driedger (DREE’-gur) to extend the game. Driedger finished with 32 saves for the Panthers, whose only loss this season was in a shootout. Dylan Larkin scored to put the Red Wings ahead early in the game.

Blackhawks 3, Blue Jackets 1 – Lankinen helps Blackhawks beat Blue Jackets 3-1
Kevin Lankinen made 32 saves and the short-handed Chicago Blackhawks jumped on two costly mistakes by Elvis Merzlikins in the third period, topping the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-1. Patrick Kane and Philipp Kurashev each had a goal and an assist for Chicago, which had dropped three in a row. The Blackhawks improved to 1-1 on a four-game homestand after losing 2-1 to the Blue Jackets on Friday night. Boone Jenner scored for the Blue Jackets, and Merzlikins stopped 33 shots.

Sixers 119, Pacers 110 – 76ers find finishing touch to rally past Pacers, 119-110
Tobias Harris scored 27 points and Furkan Korkmaz added 17, including the go-ahead baskets in the fourth quarter, to help the Philadelphia 76ers complete a frantic rally with a 119-110 victory at Indiana. The 76ers trailed by 16 early in the fourth but closed on a 31-6 run to pick up their sixth win in seven games — this time without All-Star center Joel Embiid, who sat out with a sore back. Indiana was led by Malcolm Brogdon with 25 points and Domantas Sabonis with 21, but the Pacers have lost five of eight.

(16) Indiana 79, Michigan State 67 – No. 16 Indiana women use balance to sink Spartans 79-67
Mackenzie Holmes led a balanced attack with 17 points and No. 16 Indiana took over in the second half to defeat Michigan State 79-67 for the 800th victory in program history. Indiana trailed by as many as 10 in the first quarter before cutting the deficit to two and were down 41-33 at the break. But the Hoosiers, who shot 42% (11 of 26) in the first half despite making 5 of 8 from 3-point range, pounded the ball inside in the second half. Indiana made both of its 3-pointers but went 16 of 23 (70%) inside the arc and for good measure made 12 of 13 from the foul line. Nia Clouden paced Michigan State with 19 points.

NCAAFB – QB Dylan McCaffrey to join dad at Northern Colorado
Former Michigan quarterback Dylan McCaffrey announced on social media he plans to transfer to Northern Colorado, where his father is the head coach. In a Twitter post Sunday night, McCaffrey wrote that he was “extremely honored to announce I will be continuing my academic and athletic career at The University of Northern Colorado." McCaffrey threw for 242 career yards and three touchdowns as a backup at Michigan. His father, Ed, a former NFL wide receiver, was hired by Northern Colorado on Dec. 12, 2019. He’s yet to coach a game for the Bears following the decision by the Big Sky Conference to postpone its fall 2020 football season to the spring of 2021.

MLB – MLB proposes delaying start to April 28, cut to 154 games
Major League Baseball has proposed a one-month delay in starting spring training due to the novel coronavirus pandemic and pushing back opening day to April 28, two people familiar with the plan told The Associated Press. The MLB plan presented to the players’ union would cut the regular season from 162 games to 154 for each team. Also, the playoffs would be expanded from 10 teams to 14, the DH would extend to the NL for the second straight season and MLB would also keep the experimental rules for seven-inning doubleheaders and starting extra innings with a runner on second base. Players would report for spring training on March 22.

Golf – PGA – Reed earns comfortable win at Torrey Pines
Patrick Reed pulled away for a five-shot victory in the Farmers Insurance Open. Reed closed with a 4-under 68 at Torrey Pines, making an eagle on the par-5 sixth and finishing off his ninth PGA Tour title with a birdie on the 18th. The former Masters champions finished at 14 under after a consistent four days at the blufftop municipal courses overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Tony Finau (FEE’-now), Xander Schauffele (ZAN’-dur SHOW’-flee), Ryan Palmer, Henrik Norlander and Viktor Hovland tied for second.
