Tyrese Haliburton scored 24 points and hit a tying layup with 39 seconds left for the Pacers, who trailed 101-84 early in the fourth. LeBron James hit a one-handed floater with 20.9 seconds left, and Myles Turner missed a 3-point attempt — but Haliburton got the rebound and found Nembhard alone on the perimeter, and the Canadian second-round pick drilled his fourth 3-pointer of the night.

Steelers 24, Colts 17 – Snell runs for go-ahead TD, Steelers hold off Colts 24-17
Benny Snell Jr.’s 2-yard touchdown run with 9:55 left gave Pittsburgh the lead and the Steelers fended off a last-minute comeback bid to beat the Indianapolis Colts 24-17. Snell had 12 carries for a season-high 62 yards after replacing the injured Najee Harris in the third quarter. Harris was ruled out at halftime with an abdominal injury. Pittsburgh improved to 4-7 and won its eighth straight over Indianapolis, which fell to 4-7-1. Matt Ryan drove the Colts in position for a tying score but Indy stalled in Pittsburgh territory and didn’t call its first timeout until a fourth-down play with 30 seconds left. Ryan threw incomplete and that was it.

NFL – Colts, Saturday mismanage clock at end of loss to Steelers
The Colts had the ball and drove into Steelers territory late while trailing by seven. But Indianapolis curiously allowed time to continue ticking off the clock, not using its first timeout until it faced a fourth down with 30 seconds left at the Pittsburgh 26-yard line. That play resulted in an incomplete pass and the Steelers held on to win 24-17. Interim coach Jeff Saturday says he didn’t feel as if his team was pressed for time and said they already had called plays they were confident would work. But the ticking clock put extra pressure on Indy and QB Matt Ryan.

NCAAFB – Western Michigan fires head coach Tim Lester
After six seasons, Western Michigan University has fired head football coach Tim Lester.  Lester took over the Broncos program after P.J. Fleck was hired by the University of Minnesota after the 2016 season.  Lester was 37-32 in his six seasons in Kalamazoo and helped the Broncos win their first ever bowl game in 2021 when they won the Quick Lane Bowl in Detroit.  Western finished at 5-7 this season and 4-4 in the MAC-West.   He was 4-2 against arch rival Central Michigan, including a 12-10 win in Mount Pleasant earlier this year in near whiteout conditions during the game.

NCAAFB – Big Ten fines MSU $100K, reprimands Mich for tunnel melee
The Big Ten has disciplined Michigan State and Michigan for their roles in stadium tunnel altercations that led to seven Spartans being charged with crimes. The conference announced Monday that it is fining Michigan State $100,000. And the Big Ten is suspending Spartans cornerback Khary Crump for the first eight games of next season. Crump is facing a felonious assault charge. The Big Ten is also reprimanding Michigan for not providing adequate protection for both teams as they left the playing surface.

NCAAFB – Big Ten – New Badgers coach Fickell reaching out to players
Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell spent much of his first day on the job speaking to his new players and realizing that many of them had hoped this search would have a different outcome. Fickell told them that change is never easy while adding that “the things that are easy aren’t what last.” Many players had openly called for interim head coach Jim Leonhard to get the job for keeps. Fickell comes to Wisconsin after going 57-18 in six seasons at Cincinnati. Fickell led Cincinnati to the College Football Playoff last season.

NCAAFB – Big Ten – Huskers pay premium to bring back program’s glory
Matt Rhule’s eight-year contract as Nebraska’s football coach is valued at $74 million. That will make him the third highest-paid coach in the Big Ten behind Ohio State’s Ryan Day and Michigan State’s Mel Tucker and among the top 10 nationally. Rhule was introduced Monday at the team’s indoor practice facility. He promised to bring back a physical style of play to Nebraska. Athletic director Trev Alberts says Rhule’s success turning around Temple and Baylor made him the best choice for Nebraska. Alberts also says programs need to pay a premium for coaches to compete in the Big Ten or Southeastern Conference.

NCAAFB – Michigan quarterback Cade McNamara enters transfer portal
Michigan quarterback Cade McNamara has entered the transfer portal, team spokesman Dave Ablauf confirmed on Monday. McNamara had a season-ending knee injury Sept. 17 against Connecticut, one game after J.J. McCarthy won the starting job. McCarthy will lead the second-ranked Wolverines against Purdue on Saturday night in the Big Ten championship game in Indianapolis. Last year, McNamara helped Michigan end an eight-game losing streak to rival Ohio State and go on to win the conference championship for the first time since 2004. McNamara can potentially play at another school for two seasons.

MLB – Free agent slugger José Abreu signs 3-year deal with Astros
José Abreu and the World Series champion Astros have agreed to a three-year contract, adding another powerful bat to Houston’s lineup. Abreu, the 2020 AL MVP, spent his first nine major league seasons with the Chicago White Sox. The first baseman became a free agent after batting .304 with 15 home runs and 75 RBIs this year. With the Astros, he replaces free agent Yuli Gurriel at first base in a batting order that also features All-Star sluggers Yordan Alvarez, Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman and Kyle Tucker. The 35-year-old Abreu becomes the biggest free agent to switch teams so far this offseason. The three-time All-Star and 2014 AL Rookie of the Year is a .292 career hitter in the majors with 243 homers and an .860 OPS.

AP source: Clevinger agrees to 1-year deal with White Sox
A person familiar with the agreement tells The Associated Press the Chicago White Sox bolstered their rotation by agreeing to a one-year contract with right-hander Mike Clevinger. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal was subject to a successful physical. The 31-year-old Clevinger went 7-7 with a 4.33 ERA in 23 games, 22 starts, for San Diego this year. He missed the 2021 season after he had Tommy John surgery. Chicago is looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2022 season, when it went 81-81 and finished 11 games back of surprising AL Central champion Cleveland.

Cameroon 3, Serbia 3 – Cameroon stages World Cup comeback after dropping goalkeeper
Cameroon staged an impressive comeback in a 3-3 draw against Serbia at the World Cup despite dropping its goalkeeper at the last minute. Andre Onana, who plays for Italian club Inter Milan, wasn’t in Cameroon’s lineup or even at the stadium to watch the Group G match. Coach Rigobert Song said he dropped his starting goalkeeper for “disciplinary reasons,” but didn’t give any specifics. Cameroon was down 3-1 but second-half substitute Vincent Aboubakar turned the game with a goal and an assist. Cameroon plays Brazil in its last group-stage match while Serbia faces Switzerland.

Ghana 3, South Korea 2 – Kudus scores 2, Ghana beats South Korea 3-2 at World Cup
Mohammed Kudus scored a pair of goals and Ghana staved off elimination at the World Cup with a 3-2 victory over South Korea. Mohammed Salisu also scored for the Black Stars. Ghana lost its opening match against Portugal and was in need of points for a chance to reach the knockout round in Qatar. Cho Geu-sung Cho scored both of South Korea’s goals about three minutes apart early in the second half to even the game at 2-2.

Brazil 1, Switzerland 0 – Brazil advances at World Cup with 1-0 win over Switzerland
Brazil overcame the absence of Neymar to beat Switzerland 1-0 and advance to the round of the 16 of the World Cup. Casemiro scored in the 83rd minute with a shot from inside the area to put Brazil in the last 16 with a match to spare in Group G. Brazil forward Neymar stayed at the team’s hotel treating a right ankle injury sustained in the opener in Qatar. The win gives Brazil six points from two matches. Switzerland has three. Serbia and Cameroon drew 3-3 earlier in the day and have one point each.

Portugal 2, Uruguay 0 – Portugal advances to last 16, beats Uruguay 2-0 at World Cup
Portugal became the third team to reach the round of 16 at the World Cup by beating Uruguay 2-0. Bruno Fernandes curled in a cross from the left that barely went over the head of Cristiano Ronaldo and bounced into the far corner of the net in the 54th minute. Ronaldo appeared to believe he had scored. It was awarded to Fernandes after repeated close-up replays. Fernandes added a stoppage-time penalty. Portugal becomes the 3rd team to reach the last 16 after France and Brazil. The match was briefly interrupted just before the goal by a protestor carrying a rainbow flag.

FIFA – US has clear World Cup task against Iran: win or go home
The task is clear for the United States: beat Iran in a politically charged World Cup match or go home. A draw or a loss Tuesday night would eliminate the Americans. During unusual pre-match news conferences, captain Tyler Adams was asked to defend the U.S.’s treatment of Black people and chastized for pronoucing the opponent “Eye-ran” instead of “E-ran.” American coach Gregg Berhalter was questioned about U.S. immigration and Naval policy and apologized for the U.S. Soccer Federation’s decision to strip the emblem of the Islamic Republic from Iran’s flag on social media.

FIFA – Protester with rainbow flag runs onto field at World Cup
A protester ran onto the field carrying a rainbow flag and wearing a blue Superman T-shirt that said “SAVE UKRAINE” on the front and “RESPECT FOR IRANIAN WOMAN” on the back during a World Cup match between Portugal and Uruguay. Security officials chased the protester down and the flag was dropped on the field before the person was escorted off the field. The referee then picked up the flag and left it on the sideline. It stayed there for a few moments before a worker came and collected it. The protester was ushered away through a tunnel. It wasn’t immediately clear if the person faced any charges or had been detained by police.
