Tigers 4, Brewers 3 – Carpenter homers, Tigers hold Brewers in check with 4-3 win
Kerry Carpenter hit a three-run home run and four Detroit Tigers pitchers held the Milwaukee Brewers in check, as Detroit beat Milwaukee 4-3. Detroit scored all its runs in the second inning. Three batters fouled off a total of nine pitches from left-handed starter Eric Lauer (3-2) before the homer by Carpenter, who had been 0-for-12. Detroit added the decisive run with two outs. Eric Haase kept the inning alive with a ground ball single that third baseman Owen Miller put a glove on but couldn’t scoop. That allowed Spencer Torkelson to bat. He singled in Javier Báez, who had doubled. Milwaukee started the 8th with a leadoff double, but then Willy Adames, Rowdy Tellez and William Contreras struck out. Detroit starter Spencer Turnbull gave up two runs in four innings.
Blue Jays 7, White Sox 0 – Jansen homers twice, Jays hand White Sox 6th straight loss
José Berríos struck out a season-high nine over seven innings, Danny Jansen homered twice and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the White Sox 7-0, extending Chicago’s losing streak to six. Berríos allowed four hits — all singles — and walked one in his second straight seven-inning outing. Nate Pearson and Anthony Bass finished with hitless relief as the Blue Jays won for the 14th time in 20 games. Kevin Kiermaier hit a two-run triple and George Springer had three hits for Toronto.
Cubs 6, Padres 0 – Justin Steele, Yan Gomes help Cubs blank Padres 6-0
Justin Steele pitched three-hit ball into the sixth inning in his fourth straight win, and the Chicago Cubs beat the San Diego Padres 6-0. Yan Gomes had four of Chicago’s seven hits, including a two-run drive off Blake Snell in the second. Gomes is batting .441 with four homers and nine RBIs in his last eight games. Taking the mound on a chilly night at Wrigley Field, Steele struck out five and walked two in 5 1/3 innings. San Diego, which had won four of five, finished with five hits. It went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position and left 10 runners on base.

MLB – Chicago Cubs place OF Cody Bellinger on the paternity list
The Chicago Cubs have placed outfielder Cody Bellinger on the paternity list. Bellinger and his girlfriend welcomed their second child on Sunday, a baby girl. The 27-year-old Bellinger is off to a strong start in his first year with Chicago, batting .300 with five homers and 15 RBIs in 21 games. The 2019 NL MVP finalized a $17.5 million, one-year contract with the Cubs in December. The Cubs also recalled outfielder Nelson Velázquez from Triple-A Iowa. He was in the starting lineup for the opener of a three-game series against San Diego.

NBA – Hawks playoff win pushes Janet Jackson concert back 1 day
The Atlanta Hawks are still alive in the playoffs and that will force fans planning to attend Janet Jackson’s concert in the city this week to wait a day to see the music star. The Hawks rallied to beat the Boston Celtics 119-117 in Game 5 of their playoff matchup on Tuesday night, sending the series back to Atlanta for Game 6. It means that State Farm Arena is double-booked for Thursday night. Live Nation says the casualty will be Jackson’s concert, which will be postponed until Friday.

NFL – Bears assistant GM mum on whether team would draft Carter
Chicago Bears assistant general manager Ian Cunningham raved about Jalen Carter’s talent but revealed little when it comes to whether the team would feel comfortable taking a chance in the draft on the Georgia defensive tackle. Cunningham says there’s “no denying” his talent. The Bears have the No. 9 overall pick and no shortage of weaknesses to address after finishing with a league-worst 3-14 record in their first season under general manager Ryan Poles and coach Matt Eberflus. They could use another blocker to protect quarterback Justin Fields. They also need an edge rusher after registering a league-low 20 sacks as well as a disruptive force inside.
NFL – Young? Stroud? Panthers reach consensus on No. 1 draft pick
Carolina Panthers coach Frank Reich says he and general manager Scott Fitterer have reached an agreement on which quarterback the team will take with the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. But Reich says the team won’t say who that is until Thursday night, when the draft begins. The Panthers are choosing between Alabama’s Bryce Young, Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud, Kentucky’s Will Levis and Florida’s Anthony Richardson in an effort to upgrade a quarterback position that has been in transition for the last five seasons. Fitterer said last week he had waited to ask Reich who he preferred at No. 1 so that nothing would cloud either decision maker’s judgement.
NFL – Jets GM: Getting Rodgers is ‘historic’ trade for franchise
The Jets’ deal to acquire Aaron Rodgers from the Green Bay Packers is a franchise-altering move that brings the four-time NFL MVP to a team that has the league’s longest postseason drought at 12 years. General manager Joe Douglas called it an “honor” to have a player of Rodgers’ caliber to want to play for the franchise and credited the culture coach Robert Saleh has cultivated during his two-plus seasons with the team. Douglas said there are still details that need to be finalized before the deal is completed. But Douglas said it is a "historic trade for this franchise.”
NCAAFB – Notre Dame QB Buchner says he will explore transfer options
Notre Dame quarterback Tyler Buchner says he will enter his name in the transfer portal, but did not rule out remaining with the Fighting Irish. Buchner posted on Twitter that he loves Notre Dame, but decided to explore other options after competing with Wake Forest transfer Sam Hartman for the starting job. Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman did not name a starter after spring practice. Hartman arrived earlier this year with three seasons of starting experience and 110 career touchdown passes. Buchner began last year as Notre Dame’s starter, but injured his shoulder in Week 2. He returned to lead the Irish to a Gator Bowl victory against South Carolina.
US Soccer – British executive Crocker hired as USSF sporting director
British soccer executive Matt Crocker has been hired as sporting director of the U.S. Soccer Federation. He will lead the search for the American men’s national team coach. That position has been uncertain since Gregg Berhalter was pushed aside during an investigation that developed from a feud with the Reyna family. Crocker will start Aug. 2, but begin the search for a coach immediately. The 48-year-old most recently was the director of football operations for Southampton.
