The St. Joseph High School varsity football team is hoping to improve on last season and make more of an impact in the league with younger faces this year.

Head coach Gandalf Church is pleased with how his team’s attitude has shaped during the preseason. “They’ve stayed pretty enthusiastic, they’ve stayed positive, we’ve kind of rallied around each other, and I think we have a good team concept,” he said.

Church said that there are still several skill positions where players are still battling for the top spots.  “We’ve got a few kids that we know are going to be good players and we’ve got some kids we think will be good players,” he said.

Church also said that the strengths of the offense have yet to be fully determined. “When I look at the offensive side of the ball, we really only have one player who played every game,” he said. Church had a more concrete idea of the strengths of the defense. “I think we’re pretty good up front,” he said. “We have a little bit more experience up front, but we still have to be tested.”

On the offensive line, Church said that they have a mixture of big and fast players. “For us, it’s more about technique and assignment,” he said. “If a kid’s strong, no matter what his weight is, and he’s got good feet, and he does his technique properly and he understands his assignments, then he’ll be a good lineman.”

Team captains for this year’s squad are Kory McLaughlin, Sean Akins,  Eric Engel, and Evan Wilson.

Church’s expectations for the team this year is for them to reach their potential. “Obviously that’s a little bit of an unknown, but we feel it’s championship caliber, so we want to compete for championships,” he said. “We want to behave as champions behave.”

The Bears begin their season this Friday at Kalamazoo Central.
