Flames 3, Red Wings 0 – Markstrom shuts out Red Wings in Calgary’s 3-0 win
Jacob Markstrom stopped all 33 shots Detroit took Thursday night in the Calgary Flames’ 3-0 victory over the Red Wings. Markstrom recorded his ninth career shutout in his 12th season in the NHL. The Flames, who never trailed, took control of the game midway through the second period. Elias Lindholm scored first, followed about four minutes later by Andrew Mangiapane’s goal. Matthew Tkachuk added an empty-netter with about two minutes left in the game after Detroit pulled its goalie.

Canucks 4, Blackhawks 1 – Demko makes 29 saves, Canucks beat winless Blackhawks 4-1
Jason Dickinson, Tanner Pearson and Brock Boeser scored their first goals of the season as the Vancouver Canucks topped the winless Chicago Blackhawks 4-1. Thatcher Demko made 29 saves and Conor Garland added an empty-netter with 1:02 left to help the Canucks end a two-game slide. Vancouver scored two goals in the second period to take the lead for good. Alex DeBrincat scored a power-play goal for sputtering Chicago, which dropped to 0-4-1. The Blackhawks have been outscored 21-9 this season and haven’t led in any of their five games.

Dodgers 11, Braves 2 – Taylor hits 3 HRs, Dodgers beat Braves 11-2 to extend NLCS
Chris Taylor hit three homers and drove in six runs to help the Los Angeles Dodgers beat Atlanta 11-2, cutting the Braves’ lead to 3-2 in the best-of-seven NL Championship Series. The defending champion Dodgers have won seven straight postseason elimination games dating to last season. They also trailed 0-2 and 1-3 against Atlanta in the NLCS last year before rallying to win three straight at a neutral site in Texas. AJ Pollock homered twice for the Dodgers and had four RBIs. Freddie Freeman hit a two-run homer for the Braves in the first inning.

Last Night
Cleveland Browns 17, Denver Broncos 14

Browns 17, Broncos 14 – Keenum, 3rd-string back Johnson lead Browns past Broncos
Case Keenum stepped in for Baker Mayfield and made the most of his first start in two years, leading Cleveland’s injury-ravaged offense and the Browns to a 17-14 win over the Denver Broncos. Keenum didn’t put up impressive stats, but he threw a touchdown pass and did enough — as did Cleveland’s maligned defense — to get the Browns a much-needed win. They survived without Mayfield, who sat out with a shoulder injury and could miss more time. Browns third-string back D’Ernest Johnson had a career-high 146 yards and a 4-yard TD. The Broncos lost their fourth straight and star linebacker Von Miller left in the first half with a leg injury and didn’t return.

NCAAFB – No. 6 Michigan’s run game faces stern test vs Northwestern
Northwestern is coming off a much-needed win at Rutgers in which it allowed only 63 rushing yards. Wildcats coach Pat Fitzgerald says his defensive line played its best game this season. Northwestern’s defensive line and linebackers will be severely tested on Saturday at Michigan. The Wolverines’ ground game averages 246.5 yards per game. Blake Corum and Hassan Haskins have accounted for 1,100 yards and 16 rushing touchdowns between them.

NCAAFB – No. 13 Irish and struggling USC renew intersectional rivalry
No. 13 Notre Dame is 5-1 despite question marks on both sides of the line of scrimmage, and USC is playing for an interim coach. The winner gets possession of the jeweled shillelagh, which has been in Notre Dame’s possession since a 49-14 victory in South Bend during the 2017 season

Golf – PGA – Iwata carries lead into Round 2
Japanese golfer Hiroshi Iwata topped the leaderboard heading into the second round of the PGA’s Zozo Championship. Iwata fired a 7-unduer 63 that gives him a one-stroke lead over Joaquin Niemann and 2021 Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama on the Narashino Country Club course. Matt Wallace is two strokes back and one ahead of Brendan Steele.

Golf – LPGA – Ko’s LPGA streak ends as South Koreans pack Busan leaderboard
Jin Young Ko missed extending an LPGA Tour scoring record in the rain while her South Korean compatriots packed the first-round leaderboard of the BMW Ladies Championship in South Korea.  Ko had 14 straight rounds in the 60s. That tied her with Annika Sorenstam and So Yeon Ryu for the most in tour history. But Ko finished with a 1-under 71 after a birdie on the 18th hole at LPGA International Busan. Ko was seven strokes behind leader Na Rin An’s 64.

NASCAR – What code? NASCAR drivers lament lack of on-track etiquette
Tensions are high in NASCAR as the season races toward next month’s championship finales. Drivers are pushing hard and and tempers are rising. Chase Briscoe and Denny Hamlin had a terse exchange on social media this week over the race in Texas. It brings up key questions: Should non-playoff drivers move out of the way of title contenders? Are drivers taking too many risks trying to make it to the championship round? The Xfinity and Cup series are in Kansas this weekend.

Olympics – Beijing offering COVID-19 booster shots ahead of Olympics
China’s capital Beijing has begun offering booster shots against COVID-19, four months before the city and surrounding regions are to host the Winter Olympics. State media reported those older than 18 who have received two-dose Chinese vaccines and belong to at-risk groups, including those organizing or working on games facilities, would be eligible. The booster has been rolling out nationally since late September, but Beijing authorities have been extra cautious in who receives the extra jab. China has been largely successful in preventing local transmission through strict requirements on mask wearing, quarantining and contact tracing. Cases continue to pop up, however, with 28 new ones reported Friday.
