Lightning 7, Red Wings 6 – OT – Palat scores, lifts Lightning to 7-6 OT win over Red Wings
Ondrej Palat scored with 2:17 left in overtime, lifting the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 7-6 comeback win over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night. Tyler Bertuzzi scored a career-high four goals to help the Red Wings take a three-goal lead three times. Tampa Bay rallied in the third period when Ross Colton, Nikita Kucherov and Alex Killorn scored in a four-minute span to make it 6-all. The two-time defending Stanley Cup champions were routed 6-2 in their opener by Pittsburgh and avoided opening a season with two losses for the first time since 2009.

Buccaneers 28, Eagles 22 – Tom Brady throws 2 TD passes, Buccaneers beat Eagles 28-22
Tom Brady threw two touchdown passes, Leonard Fournette ran for two scores and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the Philadelphia Eagles 28-22 on Thursday night. The defending Super Bowl champion Buccaneers (5-1) lost another cornerback when three-time All-Pro Richard Sherman left in the first quarter with a hamstring injury but their depleted defense held on after Jalen Hurts rallied the Eagles from a 28-7 deficit.  Playing with an injured thumb, Brady came out firing. The 44-year-old, seven-time Super Bowl champion tossed TDs on Tampa’s first two drives while going 11 for 12 for 121 yards.

NFL – Bengals, Lions aim to bounce back after losing on late kicks
The Detroit Lions and Cincinnati Bengals have been on the wrong side of NFL history so far this season. The Lions became the first team to lose two games in the same season on game-winning kicks of 50-plus yards with no time left on the clock, and they did it in a three-week span. The Bengals were part of the first game that was marred by three potential winning field goals that failed to split the uprights in the fourth quarter or overtime. Both teams get a chance to bounce back Sunday at Ford Field.

NFL – Bears eye share of NFC North lead with Rodgers, Packers
The Chicago Bears have a chance to grab a share of the NFC North lead when they host Aaron Rodgers and the Green Bay Packers. It’s an opportunity that would have been tough to envision a few weeks ago. The Bears hit a low point with a 26-6 loss at Cleveland. They managed just 47 yards for one of the lowest totals in NFL history. They bounced back by beating the Detroit Lions and Las Vegas Raiders. But wins over the Packers have been few and far between. Green Bay has won 19 of the past 22 meetings counting the playoffs. And the Packers are 21-5 against the Bears in games Rodgers has started.

NFL – Bears place running back Damien Williams on COVID-19 list
The Chicago Bears have placed running back Damien Williams on the reserve/COVID-19 list, putting his status for their game against the Green Bay Packers in question. The Bears are already missing their leading rusher with David Montgomery on injured reserve because of a sprained knee. Williams is second on the team with 137 yards and two touchdowns. He ran for 64 yards last week, helping the Bears win at Las Vegas.

MLB – Major League Baseball – 2021 Playoffs
Last Night
National League Division Series – Best of 5
Los Angeles Dodgers 2, San Francisco Giants 1                         (LAD wins 3-2)

Dodgers 2, Giants 1 – Dodgers beat Giants 2-1 in playoff thriller, advance to NLCS
Cody Bellinger hit a tiebreaking single in the ninth inning and prized midseason acquisition Max Scherzer came out of the bullpen for his first career save, sending the Los Angeles Dodgers past the San Francisco Giants 2-1 in a thrilling winner-take-all Game 5 and into the NL Championship Series. Bellinger’s big hit came after a 3-for-14 showing this postseason and capped a scintillating NL Division Series it seemed nobody wanted to see end given the talent and win totals involved in the latest exciting chapter of this storied rivalry. Mookie Betts had a postseason career-high four hits and will lead the next step in LA’s championship defense at Atlanta for Game 1 of the NLCS on Saturday.

MLB – White Sox star Anderson says he wants La Russa to return
Chicago White Sox star Tim Anderson made his feelings clear about manager Tony La Russa. He wants the Hall of Famer to return for another season in Chicago. Anderson says “he did a great job.” La Russa’s future is a bit of a question mark after the White Sox were eliminated Tuesday by Houston in Game 4 of the AL Division Series. He said afterward it’s up to management first and then the players. If they want him back, he says then “you check and see whether you got the desire to continue to manage, so I do.” Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf lured La Russa to Chicago for a second stint with the franchise that gave him his first major league managing job, hoping the three-time World Series winner could lead a team stacked with stars to a deep October run.

MLB – Cardinals fire Shildt over ‘philosophical differences’
The St. Louis Cardinals have fired manager Mike Shildt, one week after the team lost to the Dodgers in the NL wild-card game. Cardinals president John Mozeliak said the firing was “something that popped up recently,” but he refused to expand on what he called “philosophical differences” between Shildt, the coaching staff and the front office. The Redbirds went on a team-record, 17-game winning streak last month and made the postseason with 90 victories. They were 252-199 after Shildt took over for manager Mike Matheny during the 2018, winning the NL Central in 2019 and reaching the playoffs the last three seasons.

NCAAFB – No. 10 Spartans visit Indiana as title hopes take shape
No. 10 Michigan State is undefeated through six games for the first time since 2015. The Spartans think they can keep that perfect record intact when they visit Indiana on Saturday. Containing Kenneth Walker, the nation’s top rusher, will be a primary focus for the Hoosiers defense. But Indiana coach Tom Allen isn’t saying whether injured quarterback Michael Penix Jr. or backup Jack Tuttle will get the start.

NCAAWBKB – NCAA close to expanding women’s field to 68 teams
The NCAA women’s basketball tournament is close to expanding its field to 68 teams. Both the Division I women’s basketball committee and the oversight committee unanimously voted to approve a proposal to add four teams to the NCAA Tournament starting this season. The proposal will now advance for consideration by governance committees. A final determination is expected by the middle of next month. The expansion of teams was one of the recommendations stemming from an external review of gender equity issues of the tournaments. The report released in August was sparked by outrage at the disparities between amenities at the two tourneys, including weight rooms and other features.
