NFL – Lions take Oregon OT Penei Sewell at No. 7 in NFL draft
The Detroit Lions have selected Oregon offensive tackle Penei Sewell with the No. 7 overall pick in the NFL draft. Sewell will likely start at right tackle to potentially make Detroit’s offensive line a strength with left tackle Taylor Decker and Pro Bowl center Frank Ragnow. The 6-foot-5, 331-pound Sewell did not play last season after starting his first two years at Oregon. He opted out of last year’s delayed Pac-12 season. Lions general manager Brad Holmes is leading a front office for the first time.

NFL – Bears trade up with Giants, draft Ohio St QB Justin Fields
The Chicago Bears traded up nine spots with the New York Giants to draft Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields at No. 11 overall. Fields is a two-time Big Ten Offensive Player of the year. He is the second quarterback drafted by general manager Ryan Pace since he was hired in 2015. The Bears traded up a spot in 2017 to take Mitchell Trubisky at No. 2 over Patrick Mahomes and Deshaun Watson. Trubisky is now a backup in Buffalo. The Bears went 8-8 last season for the second year in a row, then lost at New Orleans in the wild-card round.

NFL – Jags take Lawrence at No. 1
The worst-kept secret in the NFL is now public. The Jacksonville Jaguars have used the first overall pick in the draft to select Trevor Lawrence. The Clemson quarterback was outstanding in his three college seasons, completing 67% of his passes for 10,098 yards, 90 touchdowns and just 17 interceptions while also rushing for 943 yards. Lawrence is widely considered the best college QB prospect since Andrew Luck nearly a decade ago and will pair with new head coach Urban Meyer as the faces of the franchise. Lawrence won a national championship as a freshman, taking game MVP honors as the Tigers hammered Alabama, 44-16. He finished second in the Heisman Trophy balloting as a junior last season before entering the draft. Quarterbacks also were taken with the next two picks as BYU’s Zach Wilson went second to the Jets and North Dakota State’s Trey Lance headed to the 49ers at No. 3.  It marks just the third time quarterbacks were taken with each of the first three picks in a draft.  The Falcons used the fourth choice to land Florida tight end Kyle Pitts, and LSU wideout Ja’Marr Chase went fifth to the Bengals.

NFL – Packers GM: ‘We are not going to trade Aaron Rodgers’
Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst says he can’t envision any scenario in which he’d deal quarterback Aaron Rodgers. ESPN reported Thursday that Rodgers doesn’t want to return to the Packers. Gutekunst responded to the report by saying that “we are committed to Aaron in 2021 and beyond.” The 49ers asked the Packers about Rodgers but were turned away and wound up picking quarterback Trey Lance with the third overall pick.

Mavericks 115, Pistons 105 – Hardaway scores 42, Mavericks beat Pistons 115-105
Tim Hardaway Jr. scored a career-high 42 points, helping the Dallas Mavericks overcome the absence of Luka Doncic in a 115-105 victory over the Detroit Pistons. Trey Burke added 15 points for Dallas, which moved a game ahead of Portland for the No. 6 spot in the Western Conference. Doncic missed the game because of a left elbow issue, and the Pistons were without their leading scorer as well in Jerami Grant. The game was tight until the final minute. Hardaway scored 17 points in a row during a fourth-quarter stretch, capping that run with a 3-pointer with 1:05 remaining that put the Mavericks up 109-105.

Nets 130, Pacers 113 – Durant scores 42, Nets torch depleted Pacers 130-113
Kevin Durant scored a season-high 42 points, including 22 in the third quarter, and the Eastern Conference-leading Brooklyn Nets glided to a 130-113 victory over the struggling Indiana Pacers. Playing without Kyrie Irving and James Harden, the Nets built a double-digit lead by the second quarter and were never seriously threatened. Durant hit 16 of 24 shots and had 10 assists in his eighth start since being sidelined for nearly two months with a hamstring injury. It was the All-Star forward’s third game of 30 points or more since his return, which was also interrupted for three games by a thigh injury.

Riviera winner Max Homa had eight birdies and was in a large group at 66 that included Emiliano Grillo and Ryan Moore.
