NCAA – NCAA reveals COVID-19 contingency plans for hoops tourneys
The NCAA has come up with a contingency plan in case teams can’t play in the March Madness tournaments because of COVID-19. The first four at-large teams that don’t make the original field will be placed in order and serve as replacement teams. The plan only applies to the short period between the announcement of the bracket and the start of games. Once the tournaments begin, a team whose opponent is forced to withdraw would automatically advance to the next round.

Patrick Kane broke a scoreless tie in the third period with his 399th career goal and Malcolm Subban got his first shutout of the season as the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-0. After combining for 11 goals in the Blackhawks’ shootout win Tuesday night, the teams grinded through scoreless hockey before Kane grabbed a loose puck in the neutral zone and beat Joonas Korpisalo with a wrist shot from the right circle at 8:45 of the third. Carl Soderberg added an empty-net goal with 50 seconds left in the game.

Golf – ‘Black box’ in Woods SUV could yield clues to cause of wreck
Investigators who are looking into the rollover crash that injured golf legend Tiger Woods will rely heavily on data stored in the Genesis SUV he was driving to figure out what happened. The 2021 GV80 from Hyundai’s luxury brand probably has a newer event data recorder or “black box” that holds a trove of information. There aren’t any U.S. regulations requiring the boxes, but the government does require recorders to store 15 data points, including speed before impact and whether brake and gas pedals were pressed. The regulations don’t cover new partially automated systems that can control speed, brake and steer cars on freeways. But some vehicles store data from those systems.

Gymnastics – Olympics gymnastics coach kills himself after being charged
A former U.S. Olympics gymnastics coach with ties to disgraced sports doctor Larry Nassar has killed himself in Michigan. John Geddert died after being charged with two dozen crimes, including human trafficking. Geddert was supposed to appear in court Thursday. His body was found at a rest area. Earlier, Attorney General Dana Nessel accused Geddert of turning his elite Lansing-area gym into a criminal enterprise by coercing girls to train there and then abusing them. Geddert also was charged with lying to investigators about Nassar, who is serving decades in prison for sexual assault. Geddert had said he wasn’t aware of any complaints.
