Angels at Tigers, PPD – Tigers and Angels postponed due to forecasted severe weather
The game between the Detroit Tigers and Los Angeles Angels scheduled for Wednesday was postponed due to forecasted severe weather.  The announcement was made 4 ½ hours before the scheduled first pitch, easing fears of a traffic jam because of a Beyonce concert set to occur simultaneously at adjacent Ford Field.  The game will be played as part of a straight doubleheader Thursday starting at 1:10 pm. The Angels planned to start right-hander Shohei Ohtani (8-5, 3.71 ERA) in the first game, followed by lefty Patrick Sandoval (5-7, 4.16) in the second.  The Tigers are expected to counter with right-hander Michael Lorenzen (5-6, 3.49 ERA) and righty Matt Manning (3-1, 3.19), but there was no word on which might start first.

Cubs 10, White Sox 7 – Christopher Morel helps Cubs rally for a wild 10-7 victory over crosstown White Sox
Christopher Morel drove in two runs during a six-run fifth inning that featured only three hits, and the streaking Chicago Cubs beat the crosstown White Sox 10-7. Ian Happ and Cody Bellinger hit back-to-back homers in the eighth for the 50-51 Cubs, who erased a five-run deficit on the way to their fifth straight win. They also moved within 4 1/2 games of an NL wild card, continuing their bid to stay together through Tuesday’s trade deadline. The White Sox announced after the game that they had traded pitchers Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo López to the Angels for two prospects. They could sell off more players to contenders in the coming days.

MLB – Angels acquire Lucas Giolito, Reynaldo López from White Sox for prospects
The Los Angeles Angels acquired right-handed pitchers Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo López from the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night. The aggressive deal signals their determination to contend for a playoff spot with Shohei Ohtani. The Angels traded two minor league prospects to the White Sox. They were left-hander Ky Bush and catcher Edgar Quero. Giolito is the centerpiece of the deal for the Halos, who were eager to add an experienced starting pitcher.

MLB – Rob Manfred’s term as baseball commissioner extended until 2029 by MLB owners
Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred’s term was extended until 2029 on Wednesday by major league owners. The decision to give Manfred a third term in charge of the sport was made during a vote at an in-person meeting in Washington, D.C. The extension keeps Manfred in place until Jan. 25, 2029. Manfred, 64, succeeded Bud Selig in January 2015 and was given a five-year term. Owners voted in November 2018 to offer Manfred a new deal through the 2024 season. Manfred has overseen a period of on-field change for the sport, including instituting a pitch clock and limits on defensive shifts this season. Game times have dropped by about a half-hour and offense by left-handed batters has increased.

NBA – No new details on Bronny James 2 days after cardiac arrest during USC practice
Neither Bronny James’ family nor the university have offered updates on his condition. The 18-year-old son of LeBron James went into cardiac arrest during a basketball practice with his team at the University of Southern California two days ago. LeBron James was spotted by photographers Tuesday entering Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where Bronny James is being treated. James spent only a brief time in intensive care. That’s a positive sign for his long-term recovery from the frightening episode. Bronny James was in stable condition Tuesday.

NFL – Chicago Bears, tight end Cole Kmet agree to $50 million contract extension
The Chicago Bears and tight end Cole Kmet have agreed to a four-year, $50 million contract extension through 2027, a reward for a homegrown player coming off his best season. Kmet had 50 receptions for 544 yards and seven touchdowns last season after catching just two scoring passes through his first two years. He has 138 catches for 1,399 yards in his career. Kmet grew up about 30 miles northwest of Soldier Field. He played three seasons at Notre Dame before the Bears drafted him in the second round in 2020. Kmet is the first player to agree to a multi-year extension in current GM Ryan Poles’ 18 months on the job.

NFL – Bears look for Fields to make jump after trading for Moore, adding to offensive line
The Chicago Bears gave quarterback Justin Fields a new playmaking receiver and added to their offensive line in an effort to provide him with better protection. It’s up to him to show that he can develop into the passer they need him to become. The Bears are counting on it in his third season after they finished with a league-worst 3-14 record last year. Fields dazzled last season with his blistering speed. He just missed the NFL’s single-season rushing record for a quarterback with 1,143 yards. He ran for eight touchdowns. But passing was a different story. With shaky protection and a lack of playmaking receivers, Fields threw 17 touchdowns and 11 interceptions and was sacked 55 times, tying Russell Wilson for the league lead.

NCAAFB – Northwestern coach fends for himself as players skip annual Big Ten kickoff
Bryce Kirtz, Rod Heard II and Bryce Gallagher were supposed to represent Northwestern at this year’s Big Ten media days. Instead, they were no-shows. Just 16 days after longtime coach Pat Fitzgerald was fired amid a hazing scandal that has tarnished the Wildcats’ once-pristine reputation, interim coach David Braun answered questions by himself about the expanding scandal. Braun couldn’t say much more than players because of pending litigation, which was the why the players announced Tuesday they would not make the trip to Indianapolis.

The university’s board of regents has a special meeting scheduled for Thursday.

Golf – Monahan says PGA Tour won’t support proposed rollback of golf ball
The PGA Tour won’t be supporting the proposal to roll back the golf ball. That’s from Commissioner Jay Monahan in a memo sent to players Wednesday evening. Monahan says there is widespread belief this isn’t good for the game. The USGA and R&A have proposed a modified local rule that would reduce distance by 15 yards for the biggest hitters. The rule would only apply to elite players. It also would allow for two sets of rules. Monahan says he has notified the groups the tour won’t go along with this proposal. The feedback period ends Aug. 15.
