Coyotes 9, Red Wings 2 – Schmaltz’s 4 points help Coyotes waltz past Red Wings, 9-2
Nick Schmaltz followed his franchise-record seven-point game with two goals and two assists as the Arizona Coyotes overwhelmed the Detroit Red Wings 9-2 on Tuesday. Schmaltz had two goals and five assists in an 8-5 victory over Ottawa on Saturday. His 11 points in two games is also a franchise record. Jakob Chychrun and Nick Ritchie each had two goals and an assist for the Coyotes, who have won three straight for the first time this season. Jakub Vrana scored in his season debut for the Red Wings. Robby Fabbri also had a goal and Alex Nedeljkovic made 20 saves before being pulled.

Patrick Kane had a goal and five primary assists for a career-high six points, and the Chicago Blackhawks beat the banged-up Anaheim Ducks 8-3. Dylan Strome had three goals and an assist and Alex DeBrincat finished with a goal and three assists. Jonathan Toews, Brandon Hagel and Ryan Carpenter also scored as the Blackhawks turned a fast start into their third win in nine games. NFL – Aaron Rodgers says he will remain with Packers next season
Aaron Rodgers is planning to come back to the Green Bay Packers for an 18th season, a move that keeps the reigning MVP quarterback off the trade market and answers the question that had dominated NFL offseason discussions. NFL Network reported that the 38-year-old Rodgers had agreed to a four-year, $200 million contract that includes $153 million in guaranteed money. Rodgers said any reports of the contract terms are not accurate and that he has not signed a deal yet. His decision comes nearly a month after he won his second straight MVP award. The four-time MVP quarterback has spent his entire career in Green Bay.

NFL – Seahawks agree to trade Russell Wilson to Denver
Two people familiar with the negotiations tell The Associated Press that the Seattle Seahawks have agreed to trade star quarterback Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos in exchange for a package of draft picks and players. Wilson is a nine-time Pro Bowler who had just one losing season in Seattle. That was last year when he fractured the middle finger of his throwing hand. The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade can not become official until March 16.

MLB – MLB, union bargain past midnight to salvage 162-game season
Negotiators for locked-out players and Major League Baseball bargained past midnight for the second time in a week, and Commissioner Rob Manfred’s Tuesday deadline to reach a deal preserving a 162-game season passed with no announcement. As the clock passed midnight, the lockout entered its 98th day. There was no word from Manfred of additional canceled games. The sides were exchanging numbers on the key economic issues of the luxury tax, the amount of a new bonus pool for pre-arbitration-eligible players and minimum salaries. MLB pushed for its long-held goal of an international amateur draft.

MLB – MLB launches $1M fund for ballpark workers, matching union
Major League Baseball has launched a $1 million fund to support spring training workers impacted by canceled games, matching the amount of the fund the players’ association had previously announced. MLB says the money will be administered by teams to part-time and seasonal workers based on financial need. Eligible groups include concessionaires, grounds crew, security, clubhouse and ballpark workers. MLB says it also plans to announce a fund for seasonal and part-time workers affected by missed regular-season games.

MLB – Apple, MLB announce ‘Friday Night Baseball’ package
Apple will enter the live sports coverage arena with “Friday Night Baseball.” Apple and Major League Baseball have announced that Apple TV+ will carry a weekly doubleheader on Friday nights in eight countries when the regular season begins. Games will initially be available without the need for an Apple TV+ subscription. MLB has been under a work stoppage since early December when owners locked out players at the end of the collective bargaining agreement. At 97 days, the lockout is the second-longest work stoppage in baseball history.

NCAAFB – Jim Harbaugh says door is closed on him returning to the NFL
Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh says the door is closed on his potential return to the NFL. He says he looked at possibly coaching the Minnesota Vikings to find out if he wanted to be back in the league. He says Michigan is ultimately where he decided to be. The Vikings made Harbaugh’s decision a little easier because they didn’t offer him the job. Minnesota ended up hiring Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell.

NCAAFB – Ex-U. of Michigan athlete’s protest encampment is removed
A camper, tent, signs and other items that represented a former University of Michigan football player’s protest against the school’s handling of sex abuse allegations involving a campus doctor have been removed by the school. Jon Vaughn says Tuesday the small blue-and-white camper is gone. University spokesman Rick Fitzgerald confirmed to The Associated Press that the university removed the camper and other items. It had been parked outside the home of the university’s president in Ann Arbor since Oct. 8. The former running back is one of more than 1,000 people who say they were sexually abused by the late sports doctor Robert Anderson over more than three decades. The school earlier this year announced a $490 million settlement with the alleged victims.

Russia/Ukraine – Russian soccer federation appeals against FIFA, UEFA bans
The Russian soccer federation has appealed to have its FIFA and UEFA bans frozen and other punishments overturned. Russian teams were expelled from competition on Feb. 28 “until further notice” following the country’s invasion of Ukraine. FIFA and UEFA did not specify their legal reasons. The Court of Arbitration for Sport says it hopes to give urgent interim verdicts on the appeals within days. Russia’s men’s national team was scheduled to play Poland on March 24 in a World Cup qualifying playoff. Poland has refused to play Russia in the match.

Russia/Ukraine – FIFA postpones Ukraine playoff, gives Poland a bye vs Russia
FIFA has agreed to Ukraine’s request to postpone the national team’s World Cup qualifying playoff in Scotland in two weeks’ time. Domestic soccer in Ukraine has shut down during the invasion by Russia. FIFA says it will now organize the Scotland-Ukraine game in June during the next fixture dates protected for national teams. FIFA has also awarded Poland a bye through its playoff semifinal against Russia scheduled on March 24. That decision will be tested by an urgent Russian appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against a FIFA ban on its national teams.
