The Pittsburgh Steelers scored three touchdowns over the final 87 seconds of the first half and pulled out a 30-23 win over Houston to improve to 4-3. The Steelers took advantage of two Houston turnovers while Ben Roethlisberger sandwiched two scoring passes around receiver Antonio Brown’s option pass for a TD. Ryan Fitzpatrick had 262 passing yards for the Texans, who led 13-0 in the second quarter before falling to 3-4.
NFL – Bears a mess after another home loss
If the Chicago Bears are coming apart as a team within the locker room, it’s news to coach Marc Trestman. An emotional postgame locker room scene following Sunday’s 27-14 loss to Miami featured players yelling and wide receiver Brandon Marshall calling the 3-4 start to the season “unacceptable.” That had the Bears coach on Monday calling the situation similar to what he’s seen in numerous other locker room situations. Some reports said the relationship between Marshall and quarterback Jay Cutler had been strained, while others said Marshall was yelling at kicker Robbie Gould, among others.

MLB – 2014 World Series – Rest or rust? Royals, Giants set for World Series
Buster Posey and the San Francisco Giants zipped through the playoffs, Lorenzo Cain and the Kansas City Royals zoomed along. And then, they all got some time off. Almost an eternity, by October standards. When the World Series begins Tuesday night at Kauffman Stadium, both teams will deal with a familiar issue this deep in the postseason: Does an extended layoff translate into rest or rust? The Royals went 8-0 in the playoffs, giving them five off days before James Shields starts in Game 1. The Giants went 8-2 and had four days to relax before Madison Bumgarner pitches the opener. The clubs held workouts, studied video and checked out scouting reports. But as several teams that stumbled in the World Series after long breaks discovered, nothing can duplicate playing a real game.
MLB – Tigers hire former Pirates GM Littlefield as scout
The Detroit Tigers have hired former Pittsburgh general manager Dave Littlefield as a major league scout. The team announced the move Monday. Littlefield replaces Mike Russell. The 54-year-old Littlefield has spent more than 25 seasons in major league front offices. He recently wrapped up a seven-season stint as a major league scout for the Chicago Cubs. Before that, he spent seven seasons as the general manager of the Pirates. Littlefield was also an assistant general manager to Dave Dombrowski with the Florida Marlins. Dombrowski is now the GM of the Tigers.

NHL – Red Wings send Mrazek back to minors
The Detroit Red Wings have assigned goalie Petr Mrazek to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL. The Red Wings recalled Mrazek before Saturday night’s game against Toronto, but he didn’t play. He is 1-1 with a 2.00 goals-against average for the Griffins this season. Mrazek appeared in nine games for the Red Wings in 2013-14, posting a 1.74 GAA. Mrazek was on the bench when the Red Wings defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs 1-0 in overtime on Saturday night. Starting goalie Jimmy Howard was resting an injury so regular backup Jonas Gustavsson got the start.

Cavaliers 107, Bulls 98 – Irving scores 28 as Cavs beat Bulls 107-98
LeBron James was the star attraction but Kyrie Irving stole the show with 28 points to lead the Cleveland Cavaliers to a 107-98 win against the Chicago Bulls in an exhibition game Monday night at Ohio State. Irving had 20 points in the second half. James had 18 points in 31 minutes in his first game in Columbus since rejoining the Cavaliers this summer from the Miami Heat. Derrick Rose led Chicago with 30 points. Chicago was without guard Jimmy Butler. His replacement in the starting lineup, Kirk Hinrich, had two points in 16 minutes.
NBA – Pistons waive Thabeet, 3 others
The Detroit Pistons have waived center Hasheem Thabeet, forward Brian Cook and guards Josh Bostic and Lorenzo Brown. The team announced the moves Monday. Detroit hosts Philadelphia on Thursday night in a preseason game. The Pistons open the regular season at Denver on Oct. 29. Thabeet was the No. 2 pick in the 2009 draft by Memphis, but the 7-foot-3 center has never averaged more than 3.1 points per game. He played 23 games for Oklahoma City last season.
NCAA – NCAA big holds firm on autographs
NCAA President Mark Emmert said Monday there is no talk about allowing compensation for autographs and signed memorabilia. Emmert made his remarks at a luncheon with business leaders while Georgia running back Todd Gurley remains suspended due to a school investigation into possible violations of NCAA rules involving autographs and memorabilia. Florida State also is reviewing whether star quarterback Jameis Winston received improper benefits from a large number of autographs being sold online.

He also says there is no talk about allowing compensation for autographs and signed memorabilia. Emmert made his remarks at a luncheon on Monday. Georgia running back Todd Gurley is suspended while the school investigates possible violations of NCAA rules involving autographs and memorabilia, and Florida State is reviewing whether star quarterback Jameis Winston received improper benefits from a large number of autographs being sold online. Regarding regulations covering autographs and memorabilia, Emmert says “There’s not anyone talking about change in that rule right now. All of those things will be debated by all of the conferences and the member presidents going forward.”
