Red Wings 2, Canadiens 1 – OT – Red Wings clip Canadiens 2-1 in OT
Anthony Mantha scored at 4:10 of overtime to lift the Detroit Red Wings to a 2-1 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday night.  Mantha scored his 15th of the season on a wrist shot from close range to give the Red Wings their third win in four games. Justin Abdelkader scored in the first period for Detroit while Artturi Lehkonen tied it for Montreal late in the third. The Red Wings led 1-0 for almost 56 minutes until Lehkonen tied the game at 17:31 of the third period. Collecting the puck in his zone, the Finnish rookie skated in and, using Niklas Kronwall as a screen, fired a wrist shot from the slot inside a post for his 13th of the season.

Canucks 5, Blackhawks 4 – OT – Daniel Sedin scores in OT to lift Canucks over Blackhawks
Daniel Sedin scored a power-play goal 2:12 into overtime and the Vancouver Canucks beat the Chicago Blackhawks 5-4 on Tuesday night to end a six-game skid. With his twin brother Henrik Sedin screening goalie Scott Darling, Daniel Sedin connected on a high, long shot. The score withstood a video review for goaltender interference and snapped the Blackhawks’ five-game winning streak. Chicago rookie Ryan Hartman scored his second goal of the game with 1:03 left in the third period to tie it at 4. The Blackhawks rallied with three goals in the third period to send it to overtime. Vancouver’s Brandon Sutter scored two goals to end a 13-game drought. Sutter, along with Henrik Sedin and Reid Boucher, connected on three of the Canucks’ first five shots as Vancouver pounced on Chicago mistakes to build a 4-1 advantage. Ryan Miller made 40 saves as the Canucks were outshot 44-15.

Toronto Raptors 122, Chicago Bulls 120 – OT

Nets 98, Pistons 96 – Lopez’s jumper at buzzer gives Nets 98-96 win over Pistons
Brook Lopez made a jumper as time expired to give the Brooklyn Nets a 98-96 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday night. The Pistons, fighting for a playoff spot, wiped out a double-digit deficit in the fourth quarter to tie it at 96 on Tobias Harris’ follow shot with 2.4 seconds left. Lopez then took the inbounds pass moving left, dribbled toward the baseline and shot the jumper as it appeared he might lose control of the ball, making the shot to cap a 29-point night. Harris had 24 points for the Pistons, and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope finished with 19. Andre Drummond had 13 points and 17 rebounds, but he left midway through the fourth quarter after appearing to injure his knee.

Raptors 122, Bulls 120 – OT – Raptors snap 11-game losing against Bulls with 122-120 win
DeMar DeRozan had 42 points, and the Toronto Raptors snapped an 11-game losing streak against the Chicago Bulls by rallying for a wild 122-120 overtime win on Tuesday night. DeRozan shot 17 of 38 from the floor and also collected eight assists. Cory Joseph had 19 points for the Raptors, and Serge Ibaka scored 16 before he was ejected for his role in a memorable fight with Robin Lopez during the third quarter. Jimmy Butler had 37 points for the Bulls, and Rajon Rondo finished with 24. It was Chicago’s first loss to Toronto since Dec. 31, 2013.

NBA – Jerry Krause, Bulls’ GM during 1990s dynasty, dies at 77
Jerry Krause, the Chicago Bulls’ general manager during their 1990s dynasty that saw them capture six NBA championships with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen leading the way, has died. He was 77. The Bulls confirmed his death.

MLB – White Sox, SS Tim Anderson agree to $25M, 6-year contract
The rebuilding Chicago White Sox and promising shortstop Tim Anderson have agreed to a $25 million, six-year contract. Anderson will receive $850,000 in 2017, $1 million in 2018, $1.4 million in 2019, $4 million in 2020, $7.25 million in 2021 and $9.5 million in 2022. The deal also includes club options of $12.5 million for 2023 and $14 million for 2024. If either is declined, Anderson gets $1 million. The deal announced Tuesday comes on the heels of an encouraging debut last season. The 23-year-old Anderson, selected 17th overall in the 2013 amateur draft, was promoted in June after Jimmy Rollins was released. He hit .283 with 10 stolen bases, nine homers and 30 RBIs in 99 games. He also struck out 117 times and walked just 13.

NCAAWBB – Notre Dame loses top scorer Brianna Turner to knee injury
Notre Dame junior forward Brianna Turner will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury, a major blow to the NCAA Tournament hopes of the top-seeded Fighting Irish. Notre Dame announced Tuesday that Turner tore the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee Sunday night during a second-round win over Purdue. She leads the team this season with 15.3 points and 7.1 rebounds per game, and also has 86 blocks _ sixth-best for a single season in Notre Dame history. Notre Dame faces Ohio State on Friday night in the Sweet 16 in Lexington, Kentucky.

NFL – Man named in Brady jersey case sought autographs, selfies
The Mexican media executive suspected of stealing Tom Brady’s jersey went to the Super Bowl as a working journalist but spent the week collecting selfies and autographs from football greats _ and boasting that he was there purely as a fan.  Other Mexican journalists who were in Houston tell the AP that La Prensa’s then-director Martin Mauricio Ortega was carrying multiple NFL memorabilia items. The journalists said the items included a Kurt Warner jersey he purportedly hoped to sell to the former quarterback for thousands of dollars.  They also say he bragged about attending Super Bowls going back two decades.  Ortega has been identified by a Mexican official as the target of a warrant that resulted in the recovery of the Brady jersey on March 12. He has not responded to multiple requests for comment.

NFL – Lions re-sign DE Armonty Bryant
The Detroit Lions have re-signed defensive end Armonty Bryant. The team announced the move Tuesday and did not release terms. Bryant joined the Lions via waivers during the 2016 season. He spent his first three seasons in the NFL with Cleveland. Bryant played in five games last season for Detroit and had three sacks. He had 5 ½ sacks the previous season with the Browns.

NFL – Bears to sign Benny Cunningham to boost return game
The Chicago Bears boosted their kickoff return game, signing Benny Cunningham to a one-year contract. Cunningham ranked among the top kickoff returners in the NFL the past four years with the St. Louis and Los Angeles Rams. His 2,575 yards in that span rank fourth, and he had the league’s third-highest return average at 27.2 yards last season. He also ran for 101 yards in 2016 and has rushed for 748 yards over four seasons. Cunningham joins a team that finished last in the NFC North at 3-13. The Bears announced the move on Tuesday.

NCAAFB – Ex-Irish safety Redfield avoids jail time with plea deal
Former Notre Dame safety Max Redfield will serve 363 days on probation after pleading guilty to misdemeanor counts of carrying a handgun without a license and marijuana possession. The South Bend Tribune reports Fulton Superior Court Judge Wayne Steele handed down the sentence Tuesday after Redfield entered the guilty pleas last month. Coach Brian Kelly Redfield dismissed Redfield from the team after he and four other players were arrested after an Aug. 19 traffic stop. Linebacker Te’Von Coney, receiver Kevin Stepherson, defensive back Ashton White and running back Dexter Williams each was charged with one count of marijuana possession. White and Williams are set to avoid jail under a conditional discharge program. Stepherson pleaded guilty this month and is set for sentencing in April. Coney’s case remains unresolved.

NCAAHKY – Michigan State hockey coach Tom Anastos stepping down
Michigan State hockey coach Tom Anastos is stepping down. The athletic department announced his departure Tuesday. Spartans assistant Tom Newton will serve as interim coach during the search to replace Anastos. Michigan State went 7-24-4 this season and was 78-122-24 in six seasons under Anastos. “When I first became head coach I established my own timeline for the program’s development. After a review of our season, and in spite of the progress we have made in so many areas, we have not met my expectations,” Anastos said in a statement. “As a leader, I believe that you must always make every decision based on what’s in the overall best interests of the program, and never put personal interests first.”

MLS – Bastian Schweinsteiger leaving Man United for Chicago Fire
World Cup winner Bastian Schweinsteiger is leaving Manchester United to join the Chicago Fire. The Major League Soccer team is signing a midfielder in the twilight of his career who struggled to make an impact after joining United in 2015.  Schweinsteiger, joined United from Bayern Munich, could be struggling for match fitness having made only four appearances this season, none in the Premier League. Schweinsteiger scored 24 goals in 121 matches for Germany before retiring from international duty last year.

MHSAA – Flint Beecher’s Ellison named AP Class C boys Player of the Year
Flint Beecher’s Malik Ellison has been named The Associated Press Class C boys Player of the Year in Michigan.  The 5-foot-8, 155-pound senior point guard averaged 26.2 points, 5.3 assists, 4.2 steals and 3.5 rebounds this season. Kylen Brown of Michigan Center, Nick Welch of Monroe St. Mary’s Catholic Central, Jamal Cain of Detroit Cornerstone, Victor McEwen of Burton Atherton, Carson Wonders of Iron Mountain, Dre Tuominen of Negaunee, Craig Sterk of McBain), Jack Staley of Breckenridge and Gary Solomon of Detroit Edison PSA join Ellison on the AP Class C All-State First Team. The 2016-17 team is selected by a panel of Michigan sportswriters and broadcasters.  Michigan Center’s Travis Gaddy was voted Coach of the Year.

  • Roy Anderson hit a layup with five seconds left to lift Benton Harbor to a 46-44 come from behind win over Spring Lake in the Class B State Quarterfinals.  The Lakers led by as many as 12 in the 2ND quarter.  Benton Harbor finally made up the difference in the 4th quarter.  Anderson led the Tigers with a game high 19 points, Carlos Johnson added 12.  Benton Harbor advances to face New Haven Friday night at 6:00 in the state semi-finals.
