Michigan 64, #11 Wisconsin 58 – Wagner, Irvin help Michigan beat No. 11 Wisconsin 64-58
Moe Wagner scored 21 points and Zak Irvin broke out of a slump with 18, helping Michigan beat No. 11 Wisconsin 64-58 on Thursday night. The Wolverines (17-9, 7-6 Big Ten) have won three straight to boost their chances at making the NCAA Tournament. The Badgers (21-5, 10-3) have lost consecutive games for the first time this season, dropping them into a three-way tie atop the Big Ten standings with No. 16 Purdue and No. 23 Maryland with five games remaining in the regular season. Wisconsin was without senior point guard Bronson Koenig because of a calf strain in his left leg, breaking up a starting lineup that began the first 25 games of the season together.  Ethan Happ scored 18 points in the first half, making 8 of 9 shots, but was held to just four points after halftime and finished with 22 points on 10-of-13 shooting for the Badgers.

Wizards 111, Pacers 98 –  Wizards pad division lead…Bulls top Celtics
The Washington Wizards picked up their fourth straight win and moved 2 1/2 games ahead of
Atlanta by whipping the Pacers, 111-98 in Indiana. Otto Porter hit six 3-pointers and finished with 25 points and eight rebounds to help Washington improve to 18-5 since New Year’s Day. Markieff Morris scored 21 points, Bradley Beal finished with 19 and John Wall added 20 and 12 assists for the Wizards. Myles Turner had with 17 points and nine rebounds for the Pacers, who have
dropped a season-high six in a row since a seven-game winning streak.

Bulls 104, Celtics 103 – Butler lifts Bulls to 104-103 victory over Celtics
Jimmy Butler made two free throws with 0.9 seconds left to lift the Chicago Bulls to a 104-103 victory over the Boston Celtics on Thursday night. Butler’s clutch foul shots capped a memorable duel with fellow All-Star Isaiah Thomas in the NBA’s final game before the break. Butler and Thomas had 29 points and seven assists each. Butler was touched on the right elbow by Marcus Smart on a turnaround jumper at the final horn, drawing a foul. Butler nodded his head up and down as an incredulous Smart danced up the court in disbelief. Butler calmly drained each free throw, and Al Horford air-balled a baseline jumper on the Celtics’ last shot, giving Chicago (28-29) consecutive wins against Eastern Conference powers Toronto and Boston (37-20).

MLB – Maddux dons beard for prank, fools Cubs’ Bryant with curve
Greg Maddux fooled plenty of hitters during his career _ but maybe never in a disguise.  In a video posted Thursday , the Hall of Fame pitcher donned a fake beard and posed as a sound guy throwing his trademark curveball during a round of batting practice with unsuspecting Chicago Cubs star Kris Bryant. The prank’s premise: Maddux patiently held a boom mic and offered occasional swing critiques during a video shoot while Bryant took cuts against another pitcher who left, allowing Maddux to step in. “This sound guy’s got a good curveball _ what is this?” asked Bryant, laughing. The reveal came when the pitcher asked Bryant to sign the bat “to Greg Maddux.”  Last year Bryant pranked a community college team by convincing them he was a transfer.

MLB – Nats’ ace hurting
Washington Nationals ace Max Scherzer is dealing with pain from a broken knuckle on his pitching hand.  The club says the injury arose late last year. Nationals manager Dusty Baker told the media the team is making plans in case the reigning National League Cy Young Award winner isn’t ready for opening day.  Scherzer says the injury is to the bottom knuckle on his ring finger and is “essentially healed,” but bothers him when he throws.

NFL – Jets CB facing charges following fight
New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis has been charged with four first-degree felonies and one misdemeanor after he was allegedly involved in a fight with two men last weekend. The felonies include two counts of aggravated assault and a single count of robbery.  Police say the alleged fight started when a man spotted Revis walking early Sunday morning. After Revis confirmed he was the NFL player, the man started recording the interaction before Revis grabbed the phone and tried to delete the video. The report says a man tried to help the other man, but Revis tossed the phone into the road.  An argument ensued, ending with another man helping Revis, according to the police statement. Police say two others claimed they were punched and knocked out.

NCAAFB – Police request warrants in Michigan State assault case
Prosecutors say they’ve received warrant requests from police at Michigan State University in a sexual assault investigation that has led to the suspension of three football players from team activities. The Ingham County prosecutor’s office says it expects police at the East Lansing school to provide more evidence in the case Thursday. Prosecutors anticipate making a decision on charges “in the short-term future.” Names of the players haven’t been released.

Golf – Saunders grabs early lead
Sam Saunders was the leader when the first round of the PGA’s Genesis Open was suspended at storied Riviera Country Club. The grandson of Arnold Palmer opened with a 7-under 64 that leaves him two strokes ahead of Dustin Johnson and four others. J.T. Poston, Daniel Summerhays, Brett Stegmaier and Cameron Percy matched Johnson’s 66. Phil Mickelson and Padraig Harrington are among 11 others at minus4.
