Tigers 4, Red Sox 2 – Timely Tigers spoil Pomeranz’s 2nd Red Sox start in 4-2 win
Jose Iglesias hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning, Justin Verlander pitched six solid innings and the Detroit Tigers beat the Red Sox 4-2 on Monday night to spoil Drew Pomeranz’s second start with Boston. Victor Martinez and James McCann also drove in runs for the Tigers. Detroit pulled within 5 ½ games of idle AL Central-leading Cleveland. Verlander (10-6) allowed one run and five hits and struck out five to pick up the victory. He is 3-0 in his last five starts.  Francisco Rodriguez earned his 28th save.  Pomeranz (8-8), recently acquired from San Diego, gave up four hits and struck out seven in six innings. Both of the runs he allowed came via Iglesias’ homer.

White Sox 5, Cubs 4 – White Sox beat Cubs 5-4 on Saladino’s single
Tyler Saladino hit a game-ending RBI single, and the Chicago White Sox put a damper on the Chicago Cubs’ trade for Aroldis Chapman with a 5-4 victory on Monday night. J.B. Shuck sparked the winning rally with a leadoff single against Mike Montgomery (3-5), who was acquired in a deal with Seattle last week. Shuck advanced on Dioner Navarro’s sacrifice and Saladino followed with a bouncer into center field. Dan Jennings (4-2) got two outs for the win. The White Sox also got two victories in their last at-bat on Sunday against Detroit. The Cubs trailed 4-2 before Dexter Fowler and Anthony Rizzo each hit an RBI single in the ninth. They had runners on first and second with two out when Jennings struck out Jason Heyward to escape the threat.

MLB – Cubs get closer Aroldis Chapman in trade with Yankees
The Chicago Cubs have acquired hard-throwing reliever Aroldis Chapman in a trade with the New York Yankees, giving the NL Central leaders a boost as they try for their first World Series title in more than a century.  The Cubs paid a steep price, parting with top shortstop prospect Gleyber Torres as part of Monday’s five-player deal. Chapman also brings along some off-the-field baggage and is eligible for free agency after this year. But there is no doubting the talent of the 28-year-old Chapman, who went 3-0 with a 2.01 ERA and 20 saves in 31 games with New York. He threw a 105.1 mph fastball to Baltimore’s J.J. Hardy last week, matching the fastest since Major League Baseball began tracking speeds in 2008. He is expected to join the team in time for Tuesday’s game against the White Sox. In addition to Torres, the Yankees also receive pitcher Adam Warren and minor league outfielders Billy McKinney and Rashad Crawford.

MLB – White Sox ace Sale to start Thursday at Cubs
White Sox ace Chris Sale will start on Thursday against the crosstown Cubs in his first appearance since he was suspended for five days for destroying collared throwback uniforms the team was scheduled to wear. Manager Robin Ventura says he isn’t sure of Sale’s plans while he is away from the team, but he expects him to be ready for the outing at Wrigley Field. The White Sox announced Sale’s punishment on Sunday after the left-hander was scratched from his scheduled start and sent home the previous night. The suspension cost Sale $250,000 of his $9.15 million salary. He was also fined about $12,700. The 27-year-old Sale is 14-3 with a 3.18 ERA this year. There is a possibility he could be traded before the Aug. 1 non-waiver deadline, though it would take quite an offer to get the White Sox to move him.

NBA – AP Source: Pistons agree to 1-year deal with McCallum
The Detroit Pistons have agreed to a one-year deal with guard Ray McCallum, according to a person with knowledge of the agreement. They say the deal is for the NBA minimum, which is roughly $1 million for a player with McCallum’s service time in the league.

NFL – WR Greg Jennings says he’s retiring after decade in NFL
Veteran NFL receiver Greg Jennings has announced his retirement after nearly 10 years of playing pro ball. In a video he posted on social media, Jennings says “football is over. I’m done.”  Jennings caught two touchdowns from quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the Packers’ 31-25 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Super Bowl XLV on Feb. 6, 2011.   Jennings played college football at Western Michigan and high school football at Kalamazoo Central

NFL – NFL green lights Gordon, looks into Smith
Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon has been reinstated on a conditional basis by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, although he will be suspended for the first four games of this season.  Gordon has been banned since February 2015 for multiple violations of the league’s drug policies. He can take part in preseason practices and games this summer and will become eligible to rejoin the Browns on Oct. 3 if he stays clean.  Gordon played just five games two years ago after grabbing 87 passes for a league-leading 1,646 yard and nine touchdowns in 2013.

NFL – League clears Manning
The NFL says it found no credible evidence that Peyton Manning was provided with HGH or other prohibited substances as alleged in a documentary by Al-Jazeera America last fall. The NFL said the quarterback and his wife fully cooperated in the seven-month investigation, providing interviews and access to all records sought by investigators. Manning vehemently denied the allegations when they were made late in the season.

NCAA Football – Big Ten – Buckeyes’ Barrett, Iowa’s King lead Big Ten preseason picks
Ohio State quarterback J.T. Barrett and Iowa cornerback Desmond King highlight the preseason all-Big Ten selections. Barrett was selected to the East team along with Michigan defensive back Jabrill Peppers, Michigan State defensive lineman Malik McDowell, Ohio State linebacker Raekwon McMillan and Penn State running back Saquon Barkley by a media panel. Iowa quarterback C.J. Beathard and defensive back Desmond King, Northwestern running back Justin Jackson and linebacker Anthony Walker, and Wisconsin running back Corey Clement were West picks. Barrett _ 15-2 as a starter _ enters his junior season in the top spot after losing out to Cardale Jones last year and then replacing him. King, the 2015 Thorpe Award winner as the country’s top defensive back, leads a team that went 12-2 and 8-0 in conference play.

Olympics – Fallout from IOC failure continues
Swimming’s global governing body says it will retest doping samples from all Russians who competed at last year’s world aquatics championships in Russia. The decision by FINA comes after the International Olympic Committee failed to support the findings of the World Anti-Doping Agency, which recommended the banning of Russian athletes from the Rio Games. The decision by the IOC was a blow to the World Anti-Doping Agency as well as all anti-doping agencies worldwide.

NASCAR – Earnhardt’s return to NASCAR could take more time
Dale Earnhardt Jr. warned Monday his return to NASCAR could take longer than planned. NASCAR’s most popular driver is scheduled to miss his third consecutive race this Sunday with concussion-like symptoms. On his weekly podcast, he said he will have another evaluation “soon” to see “what kind of gains we’ve made and get in front of my doctors and let them tell me where they think I’m at and that will help us make the decision on what we’re going to do for Watkins Glen.” Jeff Gordon came out of retirement to drive for Earnhardt on Sunday at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, and Gordon will race again this weekend at Pocono. No decision has been made by Hendrick Motorsports about next month’s race at Watkins Glen.
