Last Night
NL: Chicago Cubs 4, Pittsburgh Pirates 0

Cubs 4, Pirates 0 – Arrieta, Cubs silence Pirates 4-0 to win NL wild-card game
Jake Arrieta allowed four hits in nine dominant innings and the Chicago Cubs rolled to a 4-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the NL wild-card game on Wednesday night. Arrieta struck out 11 without a walk. He also dusted off getting plunked by Pittsburgh reliever Tony Watson to send the Cubs to the NL Division Series in St. Louis starting on Friday. Dexter Fowler homered and scored three times for the Cubs. Kyle Schwarber added a towering two-run shot off Pittsburgh starter Gerrit Cole as Chicago raced to an early lead and let Arrieta do the rest. The largest crowd ever at PNC Park failed to rattle Arrieta or one of baseball’s youngest teams.

Last Night

Rangers 3, Blackhawks 2 – Rangers spoil Hawks’ latest banner-raising ceremony
The Chicago Blackhawks raised their third Stanley Cup banner in five years before they were reminded that they aren’t invincible. Henrik Lundqvist turned back 32 shots and the New York Rangers scored three times in the first period to beat the Hawks 3-2. Lundqvist handled 13 shots in the final period and was perfect after Teuvo Teravainen beat him with about 13 minutes left.  Oscar Lindberg notched his first NHL goal to open the scoring just 1:43 after the opening faceoff. Artemi Panarin countered for the Blackhawks at 14:24, but the Rangers went ahead for good on goals by Kevin Klein and Derek Stepan 2:23 apart late in the first period.

NFL – Lions sign Fluellen, put Walker on IR
The Detroit Lions have signed defensive tackle Andre Fluellen and put defensive tackle Tyrunn Walker on injured reserve. Walker is out for the season because of a dislocated ankle and broken leg, and the Lions confirmed Wednesday they have signed Fluellen. The 30-year-old Fluellen has played off and on for the Lions since they drafted him in the third round in 2008. He’s played 75 games for Detroit, including eight last season.

NFL – Bears promote safety from practice squad
The Chicago Bears have promoted safety Demontre Hurst from the practice squad to the active roster. Hurst has appeared in 16 games for Chicago over the past two seasons. He has 36 defensive tackles, one interception and one forced fumble along with nine special teams stops.  The Bears announced the move Wednesday.

NFL – Goodell, owners expect future vote on LA relocation
Roger Goodell expects NFL owners will vote on franchise relocation to Los Angeles. The league’s commissioner said Wednesday the owners expressed interest “in wanting to be there, but also recognize we need to find solutions.” The St. Louis Rams, Oakland Raiders and San Diego Chargers all have designs on moving to LA, which has not had an NFL franchise since 1995, when the Rams and Raiders left. The current timetable calls for submission of applications to relocate in January, when the owners could vote. Pittsburgh Steelers President Art Rooney said he doesn’t envision that timetable being changed. He noted that St. Louis, Oakland and San Diego “still are putting together their proposals” to keep their teams. The Rams are proposing a stadium in Inglewood, California, while the Raiders and Chargers have one planned for Carson.

NBA – Silver: European expansion not likely in near future for NBA
Commissioner Adam Silver says it is “premature” to talk about an NBA expansion in Europe.  Silver says he doesn’t think “it’s going to happen in the very near future” but “could happen one day.”  Silver spoke in Madrid on Wednesday, a day before the Boston Celtics play Real Madrid in NBA’s Global Games tour.  The commissioner also said the NBA will not stop if the international basketball federation decides to go ahead with its plan to change its calendar and have games coinciding with the NBA season. He said the NBA respects the international federation but stressed that “we are unable to interrupt our schedule” and “cannot remove players from our season midway, so we will continue to play despite their new schedule.”

NCAA Football – Dismissed Michigan football player charged with 3 felonies
Former Michigan football player Logan Tuley-Tillman has been charged with three felonies, nearly a month after the offensive tackle was kicked off the team. Ann Arbor District Court records say Tuley-Tillman was arraigned Wednesday on one count of using a computer to commit a crime and two counts of capturing/distributing an image of an unclothed person. Jim Harbaugh, who is coaching the 18th-ranked Wolverines, kicked Tuley-Tillman off the team on Oct. 10, releasing a statement in which he said “conduct unacceptable for a Michigan student-athlete,” was the reason. Tuley-Tillman played in Michigan’s season-opening loss at Utah on Sept. 3. The next day, he is alleged to have committed the crimes. Tuley-Tillman is free on a $5,000 personal bond and is scheduled for a preliminary examination Nov. 12.

NCAA Football – South Carolina game moved
University of South Carolina officials have decided to move Saturday’s scheduled football game against LSU to Baton Rouge due to massive flooding in the Columbia area.  School officials wanted to keep the game in Columbia, but now say that law enforcement that would be needed to direct traffic and keep Williams-Brice Stadium safe are needed elsewhere in the area to help clean up from the massive flooding. The game time has not been announced.

Golf – Americans jump out to another lead in Presidents Cup
Phil Mickelson and Zach Johnson won the only match that reached the 18th hole and finished off another dominant day for the Americans in the Presidents Cup on Thursday. The rest of the foursomes matches were not much of a contest, and the Americans built a 4-1 lead after the opening session. The South African duo of Louis Oosthuizen and Branden Grace won the only match for the International side. It was the fifth straight time in the Presidents Cup that the United States took the lead, and its largest since a four-point advantage in 2007. The International team hasn’t won since 1998, and this wasn’t the start it wanted. Jordan Spieth and Dustin Johnson proved a formidable partnership, while Jimmy Walker and Rickie Fowler won the shortest match.

Cleveland appeals ‘jock tax’ ruling to US Supreme Court
The city of Cleveland says it is within its rights to tax visiting professional athletes based on the number of games they play a year because taxation is a matter of local jurisdiction. In a filing Tuesday, the city asked the U.S. Supreme Court to back its position after the Ohio Supreme Court struck down Cleveland’s system earlier this year. The state court ruled that Cleveland’s method for taxing athletes violates players’ due process rights. It ruled the city must assess taxes based on the total number of days each visiting player works in a year, as is common elsewhere. At issue were challenges by former Chicago Bears linebacker Hunter Hillenmeyer and retired Indianapolis Colts center Jeff Saturday.
