Tigers 2, Rays 1 – Verlander outlasts Archer, Tigers beat Rays 2-1
Justin Verlander outlasted Chris Archer for his first win this season and the Detroit Tigers avoided a three-game sweep by beating the Tampa Bay Rays 2-1 on Wednesday. Verlander (1-3), who retired his first 14 batters before Asdrubal Cabrera homered on an 0-1 pitch with two outs in the fifth, gave up one run, four hits and had 10 strikeouts. Archer (9-8) lost a perfect game bid and the lead in the seventh inning. The right-hander, 0-4 over six starts since beating Toronto on June 23, allowed two unearned runs, three hits and struck out 11 in seven innings.
White Sox 9, Red Sox 2 – White Sox win 7th straight; beat Red Sox 9-2
Adam Eaton opened the game with a home run, Jose Quintana pitched 6 1-3 solid innings and the Chicago White Sox beat the Boston Red Sox 9-2 on Wednesday night for their seventh straight win. Eaton and Melky Cabrera both had three hits, including RBI singles. Alexei Ramirez hit a solo homer for the White Sox, who built a 6-0 lead and chased Boston starter Rick Porcello in the third inning. Mike Napoli homered and drove in two runs for the Red Sox, who have lost 12 of 14. Quintana (6-9) allowed two runs and six hits, striking out three and walking one. He gave up Napoli’s homer into the Green Monster seats in the seventh. Porcello (5-11) was tagged for six runs and seven hits in two-plus innings, the second time in five starts he’s lasted just two innings. He gave up seven runs in a loss at Toronto on July 1.
Cubs 3, Rockies 2 – Lester strikes out 14 to lead Cubs over Rockies 3-2
Jon Lester struck out 14, one shy of his career high and the most for a Cubs pitcher in more than a decade, leading Chicago over the Colorado Rockies 3-2 Wednesday. A day after he was acquired from Toronto, Jose Reyes was 1 for 3 with a walk and a stolen base in his Rockies’ debut. The four-time All-Star, obtained in a trade that sent Troy Tulowitzki to Toronto, batted second and singled in his first at-bat for Colorado, then was caught stealing. Lester (6-8) struck out seven of his first eight hitters and nine of the first 14. He allowed two runs, five hits and one walk in eight innings. His strikeout high was set for Boston on May 3 last year against Oakland. He became the first Cubs pitcher to strike out 14 since Mark Prior had 16 on Sept. 30, 2004.

NCAA Football – MAC – Toledo, Bowling Green are top division picks in MAC
For the last five years, the Mid-American Conference West has belonged to the Huskies of Northern Illinois. A sixth straight title isn’t going to be easy. The conference released its preseason poll Wednesday and Northern Illinois is picked to finish third, behind Toledo and Western Michigan. Toledo received 11 of the 24 first-place voters, with Western Michigan getting eight to Northern Illinois’ four. Central Michigan picked up the final first-place vote. In the East, Bowling Green is a favorite to reach its third straight conference championship game. The Falcons got 18 first-place votes, ahead of three for UMass, two for Akron and one for Ohio.
NHL – Blackhawks getting new practice facility
The Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks are getting a new practice facility. The team says Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel will announce a deal Thursday to build a 125,000-square foot facility on the site occupied by Malcolm X College just south of the United Center on the city’s West Side. It will include two rinks and also serve as a community ice center. Construction is expected to begin next year and be completed within two years. Malcolm X is moving to a new campus next year. The Blackhawks have practiced the past few years at Johnny’s IceHouse West in Chicago.
NFL – Chicago Bears open first camp under Pace, Fox
The Chicago Bears made a lot of moves after last season, hiring general manager Ryan Pace and coach John Fox in hopes of turning things around. One change really stands out to Pro Bowl guard Kyle Long: He says there is now an “open-air environment” between the players, coaches and front office. The Bears settled in for training camp Wednesday with a long to-do list coming off a five-win season. They hope the turnaround is not too long or painful. They will be without one key piece when they hold their first practice on Thursday _ rookie receiver Kevin White. The No. 7 pick in the draft will open camp on the physically unable to perform list because of a shin injury.
NFL – Brady goes to court, says “I did nothing wrong”
Lawyers working with the NFL Players Association have asked U.S. District Judge David Doty to vacate or at least put on hold Tom Brady’s suspension. The Patriots quarterback’s lawsuit in the deflated footballs scandal questions whether the league followed its own rules when it suspended the four-time Super Bowl champion. Brady also took to social media to make his case. He posted a 507-word statement on Facebook with his firmest denial yet, writing: “I did nothing wrong.” The suit filed in U.S. District Court in Minnesota claims the NFL improperly applied its penalties for equipment violations, which call for only a small fine. It also questions Commissioner Roger Goodell’s independence when he handed down the punishment and then heard and ruled on Brady’s appeal. The lawsuit says the league can’t punish Brady for violating standards that didn’t exist.

Shenise Johnson scored 19 points to lead a balanced offense as the Indiana Fever ended the New York Liberty’s five-game winning streak with a 84-72 victory Wednesday night. Briann January had all 12 of her points in the second half to go with a season-high eight assists for the Fever. The Fever had a 32-27 rebounding advantage against the best rebounding team in the league.
US Olympic hero Jim Craig to auction memorabilia
The American flag that goalie Jim Craig draped over his shoulders after the U.S. Miracle on Ice victory at the 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics is on the auction block. The flag is one of 19 items in “The Jim Craig `Miracle on Ice’ Collection,” which also includes Craig’s Olympic gold medal, the jersey he wore against the vaunted Soviet Union and in the gold-medal win against Finland. Also included are the only mask Craig wore during the Winter Games, his skates and goalie equipment, and the goalie sticks from the games against the Soviets and Finland. Asking price for the collection is $5.7 million. The items are on display through Sunday at the National Sports Collectors Convention in Chicago. Lelands.com announced the private sale on Wednesday.
AP Investigation: Rio’s Olympic water rife with sewage virus
Athletes competing in next year’s Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro will be swimming and boating in waters so contaminated with human feces that they risk becoming violently ill. That’s according to a study commissioned by The Associated Press that tested for viral and bacterial pathogens in the waters where athletes will compete. It is the first independent comprehensive testing for both viruses and bacteria at the Olympic sites. Brazilians officials have insisted the water will be safe for the Olympic athletes. But the government does not test for viruses. An expert in water risk assessments who examined the AP data said athletes have a 99 percent chance of being infected by ingesting just three teaspoons of the polluted water. It’s not clear how many would then fall ill.
