Rays 5, Tigers 2 – Casali hits 2 HRs to help Rays top Tigers 5-2
Curt Casali homered twice, Nathan Karns took a shutout into the seventh inning and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Detroit Tigers 5-2 Monday night. Casali’s first homer came on the first pitch of the third inning by Anibal Sanchez, who lost for the first time in nine starts since June 3. Casali added a towering two-run homer off Bruce Rondon in the eighth. Detroit lost for the seventh time in 10 games. Consecutive doubles by Steven Souza Jr. and Kevin Kiermaier made it 2-0 in the fourth, and Logan Forsythe had a two-out RBI single off Sanchez (10-8) in the fifth. Karns (6-5) gave up three hits and no walks in six-plus innings, Yoenis Cespedes led off the seventh with his 16th home run to pull the Tigers to 3-1. Victor Martinez followed with a single to chase Karns.
White Sox 10, Red Sox 8 – White Sox outlast Red Sox 10-8
Adam Eaton had three hits and drove in two runs to lift the Chicago White Sox to a 10-8 victory over the Boston Red Sox on Monday night. It was the fifth straight win for the White Sox, coming off a four-game sweep at home over Cleveland. Eaton had a triple, double and single to key Chicago’s 15-hit night. Boston’s David Ortiz homered for the third time in two games, hitting a two-run shot after a career-best, seven-RBI night that included two three-run homers in a win Sunday. Mookie Betts added three hits and two RBIs for the Red Sox, who have lost 10 of 12. In a seesaw contest that saw both teams squander leads, the White Sox broke a 7-all tie in the seventh against Robbie Ross Jr. (0-1). Matt Albers (1-0) got five outs in scoreless relief. David Robertson pitched the ninth for his 22nd save.
Cubs 9, Rockies 8 – Bryant’s HR in 9th lifts Cubs to 9-8 win over Rockies
Kris Bryant’s two-run homer with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Chicago Cubs to a 9-8 victory over the Colorado Rockies 9-8 on Monday night. Colorado had taken an 8-7 lead in the ninth inning on a two-run home run by Carlos Gonzalez, but Bryant hit the second pitch he saw from John Axford (3-4) over the wall in left-center to give Chicago a dramatic victory and snap a three-game skid. Trailing 7-4, the Rockies scored four times in the ninth to move ahead. Jason Motte started the ninth by allowing a pinch-home run to Daniel Descalso, a single to Charlie Blackmon and a double to D.J. LeMahieu. Rafael Soriano (1-0), added to the roster July 20, then came on and gave up Troy Tulowitzki’s run-scoring grounder before Gonzalez roped a two-run home run into right to put Colorado in front.

MLB – Cubs release RHP Edwin Jackson
The Cubs have released right-hander Edwin Jackson a week after he was designated for assignment. Jackson was 2-1 with a 3.19 ERA in 23 relief appearances for the Cubs this season. Jackson struggled badly over his first two years with the Cubs.
MLB – Banks’ estranged wife says he had dementia when signing will
A court filing by the estranged wife of Chicago Cubs great Ernie Banks contends the Hall of Famer was diagnosed with dementia days before he signed a will benefiting his caretaker. Banks was in a protracted divorce proceeding with fourth wife Elizabeth Banks when he died in January at 83. She is challenging a will that gives Banks’ assets to caretaker Regina Rice. In March, Cook County Judge James Riley confirmed the will after two law clerks testified they observed it being signed. The Chicago Tribune reports the petition, made public Monday, says Ernie Banks’ health had turned for the worse in October when he was injured in a fall. The filing says that after he was treated, Rice took him to live with her at her Plainfield home.
Olympics – Boston out as US candidate for 2024 Olympics
Boston’s bid to host the 2024 Olympics is over. A person familiar with the decision told The Associated Press on Monday that the U.S. Olympic Committee has severed ties with Boston. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the decision had not yet been made public. The Boston bid soured within days of its beginning in January, beset by poor communication, low public support and an active opposition group. The USOC board decided via teleconference after Boston Mayor Marty Walsh announced he would not be pressured into signing the host city contract that puts the city on the hook for any cost overruns. The deadline to officially nominate a city is Sept. 15. If the USOC wants to stay in the race, Los Angeles would be its likely choice.
Olympics – US Olympic Committee will look elsewhere for 2024 host city
Now that Boston is out of the picture, the U.S. Olympic Committee wants to explore other opportunities to host the 2024 Games. In a statement Monday announcing the end of the bid in Boston, USOC CEO Scott Blackmun said the federation was still interested in mounting a bid for the Summer Games. He didn’t mention any city specifically, though the best bet is Los Angeles would be the candidate. L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti released a statement saying that his office hadn’t had any recent conversations with the USOC but he’d be happy to have them. The official deadline for the USOC to submit a candidate city is Sept. 15.
NCAA Football – Michigan St RB Williams returning after weapons incident
Michigan State says running back Delton Williams is returning to the Spartans this fall as a non-scholarship athlete. Williams was suspended from the team in March, shortly after being arraigned on a charge of brandishing a firearm in public. He later pleaded guilty to a reduced weapons charge, according to court records. Michigan State says Williams violated a university ordinance by possessing a weapon on campus. Coach Mark Dantonio said Williams has satisfied the expectations of the school’s student conduct system, the court and the football program. Williams ran for 316 yards last season as a sophomore, finishing third on the team in rushing behind seniors Jeremy Langford and Nick Hill. Williams says he wants to apologize to the entire Spartan family, and he appreciates the opportunity to return.
NBA – Wisconsin Assembly leader says Bucks arena bill has votes to pass
A Republican leader in the Wisconsin state Assembly says the votes will be there to pass a bill approving a $500 million financing plan for a new Milwaukee Bucks arena. Republican Majority Leader Jim Steineke said Monday that there are at least 30 Republican votes for the plan and he expects about 15 Democrats to support it. He says because about a dozen lawmakers will be absent, the bill will only need about 45 votes to pass. If approved, the plan would then go to Gov. Scott Walker for his signature. The Senate passed it on a bipartisan 21-10 vote on July 15. Under the proposal, half of the $500 million cost would initially be paid by taxpayers. The other $250 million would come from current and former Bucks owners.
WNBA – Sky trade Sylvia Fowles to Lynx as part of 3-team deal
The Chicago Sky have traded center Sylvia Fowles to the Minnesota Lynx as part of a three-team deal. The Sky on Monday acquired Erika De Souza from Atlanta and also give the Lynx their second-round pick in next year’s draft. The Dream get Damiris Dantas, Reshanda Gray and Minnesota’s first-round pick next season. Fowles sat out the first half of the year after requesting a trade from Chicago in the offseason. Without their 6-foot-5 star, the Sky (11-6) are second in the Eastern Conference. Minnesota (12-4) leads the West but has been hit by injuries the last week. Seimone Augustus is out most likely until mid-August with a knee injury. Lindsay Whalen hurt her eye, ending her streak of 106 straight starts. Both players missed the All-Star Game on Saturday.
