Pirates 9, Tigers 3 – Walker homers twice as Pirates pound Tigers 9-3
Neil Walker homered twice, including a two-run shot in a five-run third, and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Detroit Tigers 9-3 Wednesday night. Walker also drove in the winning run in Tuesday night’s 14-inning win _ a game that ended early Wednesday morning. The Pirates finished with 21 hits, their most since May 13, 2004 in Colorado. A.J. Burnett (7-3) got the easy win, giving up two runs on seven hits in seven innings. He struck out four and didn’t walk a batter. Alfredo Simon (7-5) took the loss, allowing six runs on a career-high 15 hits in 5 2-3 innings. The 15 hits were the most allowed by a Tigers starter since Scott Sanders allowed 16 on April 14, 1998.
White Sox 7, Cardinals 1 – Quintana paces White Sox to 7-1 win over Cardinals
Melky Cabrera homered to back a strong outing from Jose Quintana, and the Chicago White Sox pulled away late to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-1 Wednesday night in a game interrupted by three rain delays. The Cardinals lead the majors with a 51-26 record and had a six-game winning streak entering the two-game series but were held to a single run in each of the two losses to Chicago. They were 0 for 16 with runners in scoring position, including seven hitless at-bats Wednesday. Quintana (4-7) allowed a run in six innings with eight strikeouts to win for the first time in four starts. The lefty worked at least six innings for the 10th straight time, none of the starts lasting longer than seven innings. Cabrera homered in the sixth to give the White Sox the lead. Tyler Flowers’ two-run homer highlighted a five-run ninth for the White Sox, who had dropped 12 of 16 entering the series.
Cubs 2, Mets 0 – F/11 – Cubs score 2 in 11th and blank slumping Mets again, 2-0
Starlin Castro legged out a run-scoring infield single in the 11th inning, and the Chicago Cubs blanked the punchless New York Mets 2-0 Wednesday night for their second consecutive shutout at Citi Field. Jon Lester returned to form with seven sharp innings, and the Cubs overcame a major baserunning blunder to score twice in the 11th. Miguel Montero added an RBI single and Chicago won its eighth straight against the Mets, including the first six of seven meetings this season. The staggering Mets botched a suicide squeeze in the eighth and a double-play ball in the 11th during their latest flop at the plate. After neither team was able to score for 10 innings, the Cubs broke through against Carlos Torres (2-4). Jason Motte (6-1) fanned two in a hitless inning and Justin Grimm threw a called third strike past Kevin Plawecki with runners at the corners for his first major league save.

Team USA’s opponent in Sunday’s Women’s World Cup Championship will be Japan. The defending tournament champions beat England 2-1 on an own goal by England’s Laura Bassett Wednesday night and now head to Vancouver for a return match of the title match four years ago won by Japan on penalty kicks.
NBA – AP Source: Bulls reach 5-year, $90M deal with Jimmy Butler
A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that All-Star guard Jimmy Butler and the Chicago Bulls have agreed to a five-year contract that could be worth about $90 million. The person spoke Wednesday on the condition of anonymity because the deal has not been finalized. The total value of the contract could wind up being a little higher depending on where the salary cap number is set. But they won’t know until July 9, when NBA contracts can be signed. Butler also holds an option for the fifth year. The deal comes on the heels of a breakout season in which Butler made his first All-Star team and was selected the NBA’s Most Improved Player.
NBA – AP Source: Dunleavy stays with Bulls, agrees to 3-year deal
A person with knowledge of the negotiations says Mike Dunleavy and the Chicago Bulls have agreed on a new three-year, $14 million contract. The person confirmed the deal Wednesday to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because no contracts can be signed until July 9. Yahoo Sports first reported the agreement, and Dunleavy later confirmed it to the Chicago Tribune. Dunleavy was expected to get interest from several other clubs, including Cleveland. He turns 35 in September, and averaged 9.4 points in 63 games, all starts, and shot 41 percent from 3-point range last season. In the playoffs, he averaged 10.9 points and shot 48 percent from beyond the arc. The No. 3 pick in the 2002 draft has averaged 11.7 points in 902 career games.
NHL – Red Wings sign defenseman Mike Green, forward Brad Richards
The Detroit Red Wings have signed defenseman Mike Green and forward Brad Richards to free-agent contracts. The team announced Wednesday that Green will get a three-year contract and Richards a one-year deal. Green has spent his entire career with Washington, recording 113 goals and 247 assists in 575 games. He is the second-highest scoring defenseman in the NHL over the past eight seasons and will be counted on to quarterback Detroit’s power play. Green had 10 goals and 35 assists last season with the Capitals. Richards comes over from Chicago after winning his second career Stanley Cup. The 35-year-old had 12 goals and 25 assists in 76 games for the Blackhawks last season. He added three goals and 11 assists in the playoffs.
NHL – Blackhawks agree to 5-year extension with C Anisimov
The Chicago Blackhawks have agreed to a five-year contract extension with Artem Anisimov one day after they acquired the center in a seven-player trade with the Columbus Blue Jackets. The team announced the deal on Wednesday. It begins with the 2016-17 season. The Blackhawks got Anisimov, forwards Marko Dano, Jeremy Morin and Corey Tropp, and a fourth-round selection in the 2016 draft from the Blue Jackets for forwards Brandon Saad and Alex Broadhurst and defenseman Michael Paliotta. The 27-year-old Anisimov had seven goals and 20 assists in 52 games for the Blue Jackets last season. The Russian forward has 192 points in 412 career NHL games with Columbus and the New York Rangers. The 6-foot-4 Anisimov was selected by the Rangers in the second round of the 2006 draft.
Tennis – Wimbledon – Day 3
The two No. 1’s at Wimbledon have advanced to the third round. Novak Djokovic moved on with a straight sets victory as did Serena Williams. The two No. 4’s also won, Stan Wawrinka and Maria Sharapova.
WNBA – Shock’s Skylar Diggins out for season with torn ACL
Tulsa Shock guard Skylar Diggins will miss the remainder of the season after tearing her right ACL. Diggins suffered the injury Sunday with 44 seconds left in Tulsa’s four-point win over Seattle. She finished the game with a season-high 31 points. The Notre Dame graduate is in her third season.
