NCAA Basketball – Men’s – Undermanned Wolverines facing uphill climb to make NCAAs
When the clock expired at the end of Michigan’s overtime loss to Wisconsin over the weekend, a significant portion of the crowd at Crisler Center began applauding. After everything the Wolverines have accomplished over the last couple seasons, moral victories are certainly not the goal in Ann Arbor. But with Caris LeVert now out for the season, Michigan fans may have little choice but to lower their expectations. For the defending Big Ten champions, just making the NCAA tournament is looking like quite a challenge. The Wolverines (12-8, 5-3 Big Ten) host Nebraska (12-7, 4-3) tonight.
NCAA Basketball – Men’s – Blizzard postpones Michigan State-Rutgers men’s basketball
The Big Ten Conference men’s basketball game on Tuesday between Michigan State and Rutgers has been postponed by a blizzard that is threatening to bring 2 feet of snow to New Jersey. Rutgers officials on Monday did not know when the game would be rescheduled. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie declared a state of emergency and closed state offices as the National Weather Service warned of a “crippling and potentially historic blizzard” expected to hit portions of the state Monday into Tuesday.

NFL – Angry Kraft says Pats not guilty of under-inflating footballs
New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft has made an impassioned defense of his team’s actions and integrity regarding the NFL’s investigation into under-inflated footballs being used in the AFC championship game. He says the team did nothing in violation of NFL rules, adding that it bothers him that the reputations and integrity of coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady have been called into question. Kraft said he expects an apology from the league once the Patriots are found to be not guilty of breaking any rules. The NFL has said evidence shows the Patriots used underinflated footballs during the first half of the AFC title game victory over Indianapolis. The league is still determining why the balls were underinflated.

NBA – Surgery for Bryant
Kobe Bryant is probably done for the season. The veteran is scheduled to have shoulder surgery on Wednesday after suffering a torn rotator cuff in a game last week against New Orleans. The Lakers say they’ll announce a timetable for Bryant’s recovery after surgery, but coach Byron Scott says Kobe “is probably not going to play” again this season. Bryant was averaging 22.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 5.6 assists when he injured his shoulder during a dunk in a loss at New Orleans last week. Bryant’s torn rotator cuff is likely his third straight season-ending injury. He missed the 2013 playoffs with a torn Achilles tendon, and he played just six games last season before breaking a bone near his left knee.
MLB – Visitation, memorial service set for Hall of Famer Banks
The Chicago Cubs say a public visitation and memorial service for Hall of Fame slugger Ernie Banks will be held Friday and Saturday in the city. The visitation is scheduled for noon to 8 p.m. on Friday, with the memorial service at 10 a.m. Saturday at Chicago’s Fourth Presbyterian Church. Limited public seating will be available. Banks died Friday at 83 after a heart attack, according to an attorney representing his family. Known as “Mr. Cub,” Banks is remembered as much for his boundless enthusiasm despite playing on mostly losing teams as his 512 home runs and two MVP awards.

NCAA Basketball – Women’s – Speed, no seat belt cited in death of EMU basketball player
Investigators say an Eastern Michigan University basketball player was speeding without a seat belt when she lost control of her vehicle and hit an oncoming vehicle. Junior forward Shanisse Heady and Jordan Hopkins died Sunday in Ypsilanti Township. An Ann Arbor man driving the other vehicle was wearing a seat belt and sustained non-life threatening injuries.
Tennis – Australian Open – Sharapova advances
Second seed Maria Sharapova and No. 10 Ekatarina Makarova have advanced to the Australian Open semifinals. Sharapova downed No. 7 Eugenie Bouchard 6-3, 6-2 after Makarova ousted No. 3 Simona Halep, 6-4, 6-love. And Tomas Berdych advanced to the men’s semifinals by knocking out 14-time Grand Slam champion and third seed Rafael Nadal.

LMC 79, Kellogg 74 – Lady Red Hawks beat Kellogg 79-74
The LMC women posted a 79-74 win over Kellogg. Three Lady Red Hawks scored in double figures, led by Sabrina Trujillo’s (troo-HEE-oh) 20 points. Nicole Decker and Madison Cameron each finished with 14 for LMC, who improves to 14-6 on the season and 6-1 in the MCCAA West.

Kellogg 65, LMC 63 – Kellogg upsets LMC 65-63
Kellogg Community College upset Lake Michigan College 65-63, snapping the Red Hawks seven game winning streak. Labradford Sebree (see-bree) led LMC with a game high 21 points, Alec Brown added 19. The loss drops the Red Hawks to 15-5 on the season and 6-1 in the MCCAA West.

Charles Hudon of the Hamilton Bulldogs, Brendan Leipsic of the Milwaukee Admirals and Mark McNeill of the Rockford IceHogs all recorded hat tricks to pace the Western Conference to a 14-12 victory over the Eastern Conference in the 2015 AHL All-Star Game at the Utica Memorial Auditorium on Monday evening. Grand Rapids Griffins forward Teemu Pulkkinen had a goal and an assist in the win. The highest scoring game in All-Star history saw 26 goals scored by 17 different players.

Lakeshore’s defense held Portage Northern to just 14 points in the first half as the Lancers defeated the Huskies 53-45. Jimmy Gathright had 16 points to lead Lakeshore, who improved to 9-1 and 4-0 in the SMAC West. Rubin Conway also had 13 for Lakeshore. Caleb Eustice led all scorers with 21 for Northern.

Emmy Koenig scored a game high 16 points while Nicole Visin had 15 as Lake Michigan Catholic defeated Eau Claire 64-29. Bridget Hoffman also added 10 for Catholic. Michelle King scored 8 points for Eau Claire.

Michigan Lutheran improved to 8-1 and 6-0 in Red Arrow Conference play as the Titans defeated River Valley 60-21. Olivia Gallagher had a game best 17 points for ML. Erika Rosenbaum scored 15 and Hailey Maas added 13 for Lutheran.
