Patriots 34, Lions 9 – Brady passes Patriots to 34-9 win over Lions
Tom Brady threw for 349 yards and two touchdowns in a pass-heavy offense against the NFL’s stingiest rushing defense and the New England Patriots (9-2) stretched their winning streak to seven games with a 34-9 victory over the Detroit Lions on Sunday. The Patriots led 24-6 at halftime as Brady repeatedly found wide-open receivers while the Lions struggled on offense. For the second straight game, Detroit failed to score a touchdown. Detroit (7-4) lost for the second straight week against a conference leader. It fell to Arizona 14-6 last Sunday. LeGarrette Blount rushed for 78 yards and two touchdowns three days after signing with New England after being cut by Pittsburgh.
Bears 21, Buccaneers 13 – Bears rally for 21-13 victory over Buccaneers
Matt Forte rushed for two touchdowns in the third quarter, and the Bears spoiled Lovie Smith’s return to Chicago with a 21-13 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday. Jay Cutler threw a 2-yard TD pass to Alshon Jeffery as the Bears (5-6) scored 21 straight points to erase a 10-0 halftime deficit. Forte had a 13-yard run that put Chicago ahead to stay, and then added a 1-yard plunge that made it 21-10. Smith coached the Bears to three playoff appearances and a trip to the 2007 Super Bowl during his successful nine-year run in Chicago. He was hired by Tampa Bay in January, and his first game back at Soldier Field showed just how far he has to go to get the lowly Bucs (2-9) back on track.

LaDontae Henton scored a career-high 38 points and deflected a last-second shot by Notre Dame as Providence defeated the Irish 75-74 yesterday in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Classic at Mohegan Sun Arena. Henton made 14 of 19 shots from the field and hit the winning free throws with 14.8 seconds left. Henton scored nine of the last 11 points for Providence.
CMU 65, Pine Bluff 43 – Central Michigan beats Arkansas-Pine Bluff 75-43
Braylon Rayson had 18 points and Central Michigan beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 75-43 yesterday. Rayshawn Simmons added 10 points and Chris Fowler had eight assists to move past Peter Lambropoulos into sixth place on the CMU’s career assists list. Central Michigan has won all its games by double digits so far this year.
EMU 75, Longwood 43 – Eastern Michigan coasts past Longwood 79-48
Eastern Michigan raced past Longwood 79-48 yesterday in the EMU Showcase. Eastern Michigan shot 51.9 percent from the field and hitting nine 3-pointers. Mike Talley had 13 points and Jodan Price added 10 for the Eagles. Eastern Michigan outscored Longwood 34-20 in the paint and had 25 points off turnovers.

Canucks 4, Blackhawks 1 – Hansen, Miller lift Canucks over Blackhawks 4-1
Jannik Hansen scored the first hat trick of his career Sunday as the Vancouver Canucks defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1. Radim Vrbata had the other goal for the Canucks and Ryan Miller made 24 saves to get the win as Vancouver (14-6-1) celebrated assistant captain Daniel Sedin’s 1,000th NHL game with a hard-fought win. Bo Horvat had his first three NHL assists, while Derek Dorsett added two of his own. Corey Crawford finished with 26 stops for Chicago (12-8-1) in the loss. After giving Vancouver a 1-0 lead in the first period, Hansen snapped a 1-1 tie with his fourth goal in the last three games at 6:24 of the third. Dorsett chipped the puck down the boards into the Chicago zone before directing a shot toward the goal that Hansen deflected into the top corner for his eighth of the season.

NCAA Football – FSU remains No. 1
The new Associated Press Top-25 football poll has been released with no change at the top from last week’s poll. Florida State remains No. 1 with Alabama No. 2, Oregon third and Mississippi State fourth. Baylor and TCU flipped positions with Baylor now ranked fifth and TCU sixth. The rest of the top-10 teams features Ohio State, Georgia, UCLA and Michigan State. As far as first-place votes are concerned FSU got 37 with Alabama 21 and Oregon 2.

Brianna Turner had 19 points and seven rebounds for the No. 3 Notre Dame women as they beat Holy Cross 104-29 in the first round of the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame Challenge. Jewell Loyd added 17 points, six rebounds and five assists for Notre Dame. Holy Cross shot just 18.6 percent from the field and was outrebounded 63-32.

Tori Jankoska scored 22 points to lead the No. 15 Michigan State women to a 54-45 win over IUPUI yesterday. The Spartans used their physical advantage to get to the foul line. The Jaguars were only 2 of 5 from the line and committed 21 turnovers. Shanika Maddox had eight points and 10 rebounds.
Michigan 74, Western Michigan 47 – Michigan defeats WMU
Michigan Freshman Katelynn Flaherty had a game high 18 points as Michigan beat Western Michigan 74-47 at Crisler Center. Michigan outscored the Broncos 42-28 in the first half. Michigan senior Cyesha Goree had 14 points and 14 rebounds for her fourth straight double-double. Alex Morton and Jazmine Windham led Western with 9 points apiece.
