(23) Michigan 68, Maryland 67 – No. 23 Michigan barely beats short-handed Maryland 68-67
Muhammad-Ali Abdur-Rahkman made two free throws with 1.2 seconds left, lifting No. 23 Michigan to a 68-67 win over Maryland on Monday night. Kevin Huerter connected on a go-ahead 3-pointer on the previous possession for the short-handed Terrapins, who trailed by 10 with five-plus minutes left in the game. Moritz Wagner had 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Wolverines (16-4, 5-2), and reserve Jordan Poole had 11 points.  Michigan was trailing by as much as 14 in the first half and was behind 30-20 at halftime, looking lethargic after an emotionally charged win over then-No. 4 Michigan State two days earlier. The Wolverines opened the second half with a 10-0 run and later took the lead with 13:02 left while making three 3-pointers in 44 seconds.  The Terrapins (14-6, 3-4) took the lead back midway through the second half, but Wagner made a 3-pointer on the ensuing possession. The Wolverines went ahead by 10 with 5:50 to go and yet barely did enough to win against a team with just eight healthy players on scholarship.

Chicago Bulls 119, Miami Heat 111

Hornets 118, Pistons 107 – Hornets control second half in 118-107 win over Pistons
Kemba Walker scored 17 of his 20 points in the second half, and the Charlotte Hornets pulled away in the fourth quarter of a 118-107 win over the Detroit Pistons on Monday. Dwight Howard had 21 points and 17 rebounds for the Hornets, who trailed 56-50 at halftime before dominating the final two quarters. A 10-0 run in the fourth put Charlotte ahead 106-88, and although Detroit answered with nine quick points, the Hornets were never in much danger of losing down the stretch.  Andre Drummond of the Pistons had only three points and 10 rebounds, and his day was summed up late in the fourth when he went up for a powerful, one-handed dunk, only to have Howard easily swat the ball away.  Tobias Harris scored 20 points for Detroit despite foul trouble. The Pistons shot 15 of 29 from 3-point range. Marvin Williams had 21 points for Charlotte and shot 7 of 8 from the field. Detroit’s Reggie Bullock had 20 points.

Bulls 119, Heat 111 – LaVine gets 18, Bulls end Miami’s 7-game win streak, 119-111
Zach LaVine scored 18 points in his second game with Chicago as the Bulls ended the Miami Heat’s seven-game winning streak with a 119-111 victory Monday.  Justin Holiday made a career-best seven 3s and scored 25 points for the Bulls, who have won three straight and 14 of their last 21. The Bulls are limiting LaVine to 20 minutes per game in his first week back after returning from an ACL tear last season. He scored 13 points in 12 minutes in the first half, and his four-point play with 0.9 seconds left before the break put the Bulls ahead 55-48 after a 14-2 run.  The Bulls hit 16 of 39 3-pointers (41 percent), their eighth straight game with at least 10 3-pointers, a franchise record.  Nicola Mirotic scored all 18 of his points in the fourth quarter for the Bulls.

NFL – AP source: Colts closing in on deal to hire McDaniels
A person familiar with the negotiations says the Indianapolis Colts are “close” to reaching a deal to hire Josh McDaniels as their new coach. The person spoke to The Associated Press on Monday on condition of anonymity because they were still working on the contract. But even if the two sides agreed to a deal, the official announcement couldn’t be made until New England’s season ends. McDaniels is the Patriots offensive coordinator and is preparing for Sunday’s AFC championship game. McDaniels has been one of the most coveted coordinators on the coaching carousel this year. McDaniels and Houston defensive coordinator Mike Vrabel are believed to be the olts’ finalists. McDaniels went 11-17 in two seasons as Denver’s head coach in 2009-10.

NFL – Titans drop Mularkey
The Tennessee Titans are parting with head coach Mike Mularkey just a week after controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk said he would be back next season. Strunk says in a statement they discussed extending his contract during the past week, but that each side saw a different path to take the team to greater success. Mularkey took over as interim head coach in 2015 and revived a team with the NFL’s worst record over two seasons. He led the Titans to their first playoff victory in 14 years before losing to the Patriots 35-14 on Saturday. Mularkey was 20-21 at Tennessee, including a pair of 9-7 seasons after becoming the permanent head coach in January 2016.

NCAAFB – Michigan hires Moore as part of Harbaugh’s reshaped staff
Michigan has hired Sherrone Moore to coach tight ends.  Jim Harbaugh made the move Monday, another step in the reshaping of his staff this offseason. Moore coached Central Michigan’s tight ends the last four years. Harbaugh previously hired former Michigan State quarterback Dan Enos and Al Washington to be assistant coaches along with Ben Herbert to lead the team’s strength and conditioning program.  Enos led the Chippewas from 2010 to 2014 and went on to coach Arkansas’ quarterbacks the last three seasons. Washington was the defensive line coach for the Cincinnati Bearcats last year. Harbaugh is making changes after closing last season with three straight losses, falling to 8-5. The Wolverines were 10-2 in each of his first two seasons.

MLB – Giants get McCutchen from Pirates
The Pittsburgh Pirates have finally pulled off a trade involving center fielder Andrew McCutchen. The Bucs have shipped McCutchen to the Giants for right-hander Kyle Crick, minor league outfielder Bryan Reynolds and $500,000 in international signing bonus allocation. The move comes two days after the Pirates sent ace pitcher Gerrit Cole to the Astros. The 2013 National League MVP takes over in center from Denard Span, who was dealt to the Rays in the Evan Longoria deal. The durable McCutchen has played at least 153 games in each of the past three seasons for the Pirates, batting .279 with 28 home runs and 88 RBIs in 156 games in 2017. But he has not been an All-Star since 2015, when he was selected for the fifth straight season. McCutchen is entering the final season of a six-year, $51.5 million contract.

Olympics – Women’s Hockey – Koreas may field joint women’s ice hockey team at Olympics
North and South Korea have agreed in principle to field a joint women’s ice hockey team during next month’s Olympics in South Korea, pending approval from the International Olympic Committee. A South Korean Sports Ministry spokesman confirmed Monday that the two sides had agreed, saying they have been discussing the make-up of a unified women’s hockey team since last year.  If realized, it would be the Koreas’ first unified Olympic team.

Olympics – Women’s Bobsled – Jamaica sending its first women’s bobsled team to Olympics
Jamaica is sending a women’s bobsled team to the Olympics for the first time. Jazmine Fenlator-Victorian, who drove for the U.S. at the 2014 Sochi Games, will pilot the Jamaican sled in the Pyeongchang Olympics next month. It’ll likely be pushed by Carrie Russell, a sprinter who helped Jamaica win gold in the 4×100-meter relay at the 2013 world track and field championships. Audra Segree was also picked as a brakeman for the Jamaican team. Fenlator finished 11th with brakeman Lolo Jones for the Americans in Sochi. There will be 20 sleds in the women’s bobsled event in Pyeongchang. These Olympics mark the 30th anniversary of Jamaica’s famed men’s bobsled debut at the Calgary Games.

Tennis – Pera halts U.S. skid
U.S. women have earned another victory at the Australian Open after going 1-9 during Day 1.  Bernarda Pera picked up her first career Grand Slam victory by defeating Anna Blinkova 6-2, 6-2. The Croatian-born New Jersey resident lost in the final round of qualifying and only got into the tournament on Monday when another player withdrew. Other Day 2 winners on the women’s side include 2016 champion Angelique Kerber, former No. 1-ranked Karolina Pliskova, Maria Sharapova  and Johanna Konta, who ousted American Madison Brengle. Men’s fourth seed Alexander Zverev won his opening-round match in straight sets.
